Performance of amines as silanol suppressors in reversed-phase liquid chromatography

In reversed-phase liquid chromatography, cationic basic compounds yield broad and asymmetrical peaks, as a result of their ionic interaction with the anionic free silanol groups present in the silica-based stationary phases (commonly derivatised with C18 groups). A simple way to improve the peak shape is the addition to the hydro-organic mobile phase of a reagent (usually called additive) with cationic character. This associates with the stationary phase to prevent the access of analytes to the free silanol groups. Cationic additives may interact electrostatically with the anionic silanols. Abstract Solid support assisted derivatization coupled to diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) was proposed and proved useful for the detection and quantification of aliphatic amines in water as an example. Dabsyl chloride (DBS), ninhydrin and sodium 1,2-naphtoquinone 4-sulphonate (NQS) were assayed as derivatization reagents. Evaluation of C18 adsorbent cartridges for sampling and derivatization of primary amines in air

Abstract The sampling efficiency of C18 solid-phase extraction cartridges was investigated for methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, butylamine and pentylamine, in air. Determination of these analytes was based on derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde–N-acetylcysteine (OPA–NAC) on the solid support and fluorescence detection at λexcitation=330 nm and λemission=440 nm of the eluted derivatives. The calibration model derived from aqueous standards was statistically comparable with the calibration model for air standards. Aqueous amines can be used as standards. Abstract A new microscale method is presented for the determination of ammonium and primary short-chain aliphatic amines (methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, n -butylamine and n -pentylamine) in water. The assay uses precolumn derivatization with the reagent o -phthaldialdehyde (OPA) in combination with the thiol N -acetyl- l -cysteine (NAC), and capillary liquid chromatography with UV detection at 330 nm. Sensitive determination of aliphatic amines in water by high-performance liquid chromatography with chemiluminescence detection.

A sensitive method has been developed for liquid chromatographic determination of short aliphatic amines in water samples. Analytes are preconcentrated and dansylated on solid sorbents (C18 solid-phase extraction cartridges). The dansyl derivatives are chromatographed and post-column mixed with peroxyoxalate (TCPO) and H2O2 in order to perform chemiluminescence detection. Optimal results have been obtained using a sample volume of 5 ml. Rapid fluorimetric assay for primary amine groups in water samples

Bond Elut C(18) solid-phase extraction cartridges were used for pre-concentration followed by derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde-N-acetylcysteine (OPA-NAC) of primary amines in water. Optimal conditions were: conditioning the cartridges with borate buffer pH 10.4, retention of the primary amines, addition of the OPA-NAC(3.7 mmol L(-1)) 1:1 molar ratio and borate buffer pH 8, elution of the isoindol with MeOH-borate buffer (9:1) pH 10.2 and fluorescence measurement.
