Dose-Adjusted Thrombosis Prophylaxis in Trauma Surgery According to Levels of D-Dimer

In 234 trauma surgery patients, thrombosis prophylaxis with Nadroparin-Calcium low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) was adjusted according to levels of D-Dimer. Basic prophylaxis was 2,850 IU per day. If D-Dimer concentrations rose above 2 mg/L after the fourth postoperative (p.o.) day, LMWH was administered twice a day. Color Doppler ultrasound was performed between the fifth and seventh p.o. days. Patients were divided into a high-risk (group 1: hip, femur, or knee replacement surgery, n=102) and a moderate-risk group (group 2: other surgery of the knee, tibia, fibula, or foot, n=132). Laboratory control of minimal heparinization during haemodialysis in patients with a risk of haemorrhage

Abstract For patients undergoing dialysis with a high risk of haemorrhage there is no standardized procedure for anticoagulation during extracorporeal circulation. Minimal heparinization with a dose equivalent to half that used for chronic haemodialysis was employed in 49 patients (125 haemodialyses) performed after operative interventions (83.3%), after haemorrhagic events (5.2%) and after invasive investigations (11.5%). The serum protease network—one key to understand complex regional pain syndrome pathophysiology

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) develops after fracture. The acute CRPS phenotype resembles exaggerated inflammation, which is explained by local and systemic activation of a proinflammatory network including peptides and cytokines. Epidemiologic data suggest that inactivation of the peptidase angiotensin-converting enzyme in patients treated for hypertension increases the odds to develop CRPS. Activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes of skeletal muscle in neuromuscular diseases.

The activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes, as well as of 2 hydrolases were studied in skeletal muscle biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with neuromuscular diseases and from 15 controls. The activity of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase was higher in patients with congenital myotonia, whereas in the other diagnostic groups this enzyme activity was the same as in the controls. The Se-independent and total glutathione peroxidase activity of patients in the various diagnostic groups did not differ from the controls. Aims:  The aim of the study was to characterize the effect of various nitrogen sources on Oenococcus oeni growth, carbon source utilization, extracellular protease activity and extracellular proteins. Abstract The persistent pollutants polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been demonstrated to produce several negative effects on marine organisms. Although Mytilus galloprovincialis was extensively studied as model system, the effects of PBDEs on the innate immune system of mussels remains unclear. Further studies on associations between leprosy and genetic markers in human serum.

Seven serum proteins were typed on a sample of 910 individuals from Angola, Africa. The sample consisted of both leprosy patients and healthy controls from the same geographical area. Significant associations with leprosy were found for the Hp and Pi systems. The results are discussed.

Mechanisms of tumor invasion: evidence from in vivo observations.

The major mechanisms of tumor invasion in vivo are discussed in the present review. A special emphasis is placed on tumor dedifferentiation which has proved to be of paramount importance for the invasion process. Based on in vivo observations obtained from various human and animal tumors a concept for the mechanism of tumor invasion is proposed which mainly comprises the following basic events: the first and essential step in tumor invasion is the tumor dedifferentiation and dissociation at the invasion front. Ub surprised: viral ovarian tumor domain proteases remove ubiquitin and ISG15 conjugates.

Ubiquitin (Ub) and interferon stimulated gene product 15 (ISG15) reversibly conjugate to proteins via a conserved LRLRGG C-terminal motif, mediating important innate antiviral responses. The ovarian tumor (OTU) domain represents a superfamily of predicted proteases found in eukaryotic, bacterial and viral proteins, some of which have Ub-deconjugating activity. We show that the OTU domain-containing proteases of nairoviruses and arteriviruses hydrolyze Ub and ISG15 from cellular target proteins. Abstract Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4/CD26) and seprase/fibroblast activation protein α are homologous type II transmembrane, homodimeric glycoproteins that exhibit unique prolyl peptidase activities. Human DPP4 is ubiquitously expressed in epithelial and endothelial cells and serves multiple functions in cleaving the penultimate positioned prolyl bonds at the NH2 terminus of a variety of physiologically important peptides in the circulation.
