The amide bond represents one of the most fundamental functional groups in chemistry. The properties of amides are defined by amidic resonance (nN→π*C=O conjugation), which enforces planarity of the six atoms comprising the amide bond. Despite the importance of 4-halo-substituted benzamides in organic synthesis, molecular interactions and medicinal chemistry, the effect of 4-halo-substitution on the properties of the amide bond in N,N-disubstituted benzamides has not been studied. SUMMARY Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory systemic disease affecting the spine, sacroiliacal and peripheral joints. Although the aetiology of AS remains unknown, the strong association with the HLA-B27 allele might reflect directly a detrimental effect of the HLA-B27 molecule itself, resulting from its potential capability to present ‘arthritogenic’ peptides to CD8+ T cells. Modulation of type II collagen-induced arthritis in DBA/1 mice by intravenous application of a peptide from the C1q-A chain.

In this report we are able to show that intravenous (i.v.) application (day 0) of a nonapeptide (residues 26-34) from the human C1q A-chain (designated peptide A-C1q) prior to intradermal (i.d.) administration of chicken type II collagen (CII) in arthritis-susceptible DBA/1 mice (H2q), leads to abrogation of polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) invasion into the joints. Cells of extramammary Paget's disease express cytokeratins different from those of epidermal cells.

The patterns of expression of cytokeratin polypeptides which are closely correlated to routes of differentiation of epithelial cells were studied in extramammary Paget's disease. Cytokeratins of uninvolved and involved epidermis were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of microdissected tissue preparations as well as by immunofluorescence microscopy using cytokeratin antibodies with different specificities. Positive association of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol with lumbar and femoral neck bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

Abstract Objective Experimental studies suggest that lipids affect bone metabolism. We aimed to elucidate whether lipid levels are associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in a cohort of postmenopausal women. Design A cross-sectional study of participants in the Chronic Ailment Reduction after MENopause (CARMEN) cohort. Women underwent assessment of clinical and analytical parameters, including fasting lipid levels. BMD was assessed at both lumbar spine and hip.
