The value of academics’ research-related online writing

2020

Research productivity indicators tend to ignore online and social media writing of academics, nevertheless, many academics for instance tweet and blog. It thus seems that there is additional value for writing in these genres. This study sets out to explore what roles writing in these hybrid online genres plays in relation to academics’ research activities. Drawing on in-depth research interviews with 29 academics with various L1s from three different disciplines, the study focuses on the participants’ perceptions of tweeting and blogging, and how they value writing in these genres in relation to core research-writing genres in their fields. Besides some differences in the evaluations betwee…

Serious Games for Elderly Continuous Monitoring

2014

Information technology (IT) and serious games allow older population to remain independent for longer. Hence, when designing technology for this population, developmental changes, such as attention and/or perception, should be considered. For instance, a crucial developmental change has been related to cognitive speed in terms of reaction time (RT). However, this variable presents a skewed distribution that difficult data analysis. An alternative strategy is to characterize the data to an ex-Gaussian function. Furthermore, this procedure provides different parameters that have been related to underlying cognitive processes in the literature. Another issue to be considered is the optimal dat…

Relationship between Perception and Socio-Economic Characteristics of Culture Community in the Development of Marine Ecotourism in Nusmapi Island

2021

Marine tourism is a type of special interest tourism, namely by managing and utilizing marine and coastal landscapes, both those that are managed directly such as swimming, boating, snorkeling, diving, or indirectly such as picnics and beach sports. Nusmapi Island has the potential to be developed as a marine tourism object which has the potential for waters and coral reefs that are in good condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the level of public perception and the socio-economic conditions of the local community on Nusmapi Island. In October-November 2020 this research was carried out on Nusmapi Island, Manokwari Regency. The descriptive explorator…

The Perception and Attitudes Towards City Garbage Management: A First Analysis

2017

The main aim of this paper is to to explore the perception and attitude of people toward an important issue like the City Garbage Management. A new Survey Questionnaire to measure the perception and attitudes towards city garbage management has been developed by the Authors, in order to realize a very first analysis of compatibility of the Comprehensive Action Determination Model - CADM (Klöckner, 2013) with City Garbage Management issues. To test the application of the CADM model to City Garbage Management, a simple linear regression was calculated to predict the dependent variables based on predictor variables according the CADM model. The linear regression analysis shows a first confirma…

Facilitadores en el procesamiento cognitivo de la información rítmica

2021

Rhythm perception models have studied an important variety of general characteristics of temporal structures and specific elements of musical rhythm, presenting a degree of heterogeneity in study objects. However, most of the research converges in the study of processes related to the listener's detection of an underlying temporal pulse. This, along with other processes such as temporal grouping, have been referred to as basic or primitive aspects, since they seem fundamental to the perception of simple rhythmic sequences. In the present work, a review of the literature in which research findings related to the cognitive processing of basic rhythmic aspects are described, synthesized and re…

Sensory system interactions during simultaneous vestibular and visual stimulation in PET

2002

The patterns of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) increases and decreases in PET were compared for unimodal vestibular, unimodal visual, and for simultaneous vestibular and visual stimulation. Thirteen healthy volunteers were exposed to a) caloric vestibular stimulation, b) small-field visual motion stimulation in roll, c) simultaneous caloric vestibular and visual pattern stimulation. Unimodal vestibular stimulation led to activations of vestibular cortex areas, in particular the parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC), and concurrent deactivations of visual cortical areas [Brodmann area (BA) 17-19]. Unimodal visual motion stimulation led to activations of the striate visual cortex and …

Responses to eccentric rotation in two space-bound subjects

1993

Two subjects were rotated eccentrically in the manner described previously. In contrast to a normal control group, settings of a luminous line to the subjective vertical were almost unrelated to the gravitoinertial vector before, and totally so shortly after, space flight. Only 3 days postflight did a clear relation to the gravitoinertial vector re-establish itself in the one subject who actually flew. The correspondence became normal 5 days after the flight. Since there were no clinical abnormalities evident in the subjects, it is suggested that both subjects suppressed their vestibular information, presumably as an effect of vestibular deconditioning training before the flight. In additio…

Posterior insular cortex - a site of vestibular-somatosensory interaction?

2013

Background In previous imaging studies the insular cortex (IC) has been identified as an essential part of the processing of a wide spectrum of perception and sensorimotor integration. Yet, there are no systematic lesion studies in a sufficient number of patients examining whether processing of vestibular and the interaction of somatosensory and vestibular signals take place in the IC. Methods We investigated acute stroke patients with lesions affecting the IC in order to fill this gap. In detail, we explored signs of a vestibular tone imbalance such as the deviation of the subjective visual vertical (SVV). We applied voxel-lesion behaviour mapping analysis in 27 patients with acute unilate…
