Investigating teachers’ dyadic self-efficacy and its correlations to students’ perceptions of teacher efficacy and student well-being

2022

Most studies, to date, have ignored variance in teachers’ self-efficacy (TSE) in relation to teaching individual students (i.e., student-specific self-efficacy). However, TSE and teacher efficacy differ among students. Thus, this study examines dyadic TSE in four domains and their correlations with students’ perceptions of teacher efficacy and student academic self-concept and well-being. Results of a paper–pencil survey involving 29 teachers and 469 students (39.9% girls, aged 10–17 years) from German secondary schools reveal a moderate overlap between dyadic TSE and students’ perceptions of teacher efficacy. Furthermore, they reveal variance in how teachers’ and students’ ratings are rela…

Isomorphism and Mirror Neurons

2007

This paper aims to give a constructive contribution to Eagle & Wakefield's con-tention ( Gestalt Theory 29, 59-64) that the Gestaltists' hypotheses regarding isomorphism andphenomenological direct access to other's mind anticipate recent accounts of mind-readingability. I attempt to specify the extent to which Gestalt psychology might be seen to be consistentunder certain respects with mirror neurons system theory and embodied simulation theory, claimed to be founding the aforementioned ability. Therefore, empirical and theoretical issues such as the neurobiological features of the mirrorneuron system, the psychological explanation of its functions, and the features of the embodied simulatio…

Tapology: A Game-Based Platform to Facilitate E-Health and E-Inclusion

2014

Published version of a chapter in the book: Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction. Aging and Assistive Environments. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-07446-7_36 We have developed a tablet computer game app for low vision users that can be used to introduce a platform for gaming, internet and visual rehabilitation to older users who have not had prior experience with information communication technology (ICT). Our target user group is people diagnosed with Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The primary goal of the app is to present a fun and engaging means for participants to engage with Information Communication Technology (ICT). A long…

An Empirical Examination of the Economics of Mobile Application Security

2021

The growth of mobile devices coupled with the advances in mobile technologies has resulted in the development and widespread use of a variety of mobile applications (apps). Mobile apps have been developed for social networking, banking, receiving daily news, maintaining fitness, and for job-related tasks. The security of the apps is an important concern. However, in some cases, the app developers may be less interested to invest in the security of the apps, if users are unwilling to pay for the added security. In this paper, we empirically examine whether consumers are less willing to pay for security features than for usability features. In addition, we examine whether a third-party certif…

Lost or not? : designing and evaluating user interfaces of mobile map services : the viewpoint of supporting users' location awareness

2016

The motivation for this thesis arose from the problem of people getting lost, both with and without mobile maps. I will answer a primary research question: 1) How can we support users’ location awareness with mobile map applications? As an ad-dition to this, I have the following sub-questions: a) Why do people get lost even when using a mobile map application? b) What are the best practices to support navigation? c) How can we research what the important objects in the natural environment are that should be emphasized in mobile maps? d) How do we prevent the user from focusing on the map service at the expense of perceiving the location in the real environment? e) What would a good mobile m…

Customers' Perceived Risk and Trust in Using Mobile Money Services—an Empirical Study of Ghana

2019

Although mobile money (MM) has been explored in the existing literature, the roles of trust and risk in MM use have received little attention from researchers. Furthermore, many of the existing studies have treated these constructs as unidimensional. The extant literature also shows that perceived risk has received little attention from researchers who have conducted studies on MM. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the roles of trust and perceived risk in customers' intent to adopt MM services in Ghana. Both trust and perceived risk were broken down into various dimensions. The study involved 671 respondents who were selected via an intercept approach and an online survey. Str…

In search of perceptual and acoustical correlates of polyphonic timbre

2009

Polyphonic timbre refers to the overall timbre mixture of a music signal, or in simple words, the 'global sound' of any piece of music. It has been proven to be an important element for computational categorization according to genre, style, mood, and emotions, but its perceptual constituents have been less investigated. The aim of the study is to determine the most salient features of polyphonic timbre perception by investigating the descriptive auditory qualities of music and mapping acoustic features to these descriptors. Descriptors of monophonic timbre taken from previous literature were used as a starting point. Based on three pilot studies, eight scales were chosen for the actual exp…

2015

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan mielisairauden kansanomaisia tulkintoja 1900-luvun ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä, jolloin mielisairaita ja muita marginaaliryhmiä koskeva yhteiskunnallinen keskustelu kävi vilkkaana. Mielisairaat alkoivat degeneraatioteorioiden myötä näyttäytyä modernisoituvan yhteiskunnan ei- toivottuina toisina, joiden henkinen ja fyysinen rappio uskottiin perinnölliseksi. Mielisairaaloiden lukumäärää lisättiin, mutta merkittävä osa mielisairaiksi katsotuista eli yhä laitosten ulkopuolella, esimerkiksi elätteellä maaseudun yksityisissä perheissä. Artikkelissa selvitetään, miten mielisairaisiin suhtaudutaan aikakauden maallikkokerronnassa ja millaisia käsityksiä esitetään mielisair…

Influence of Musical Context on the Perception of Emotional Expression of Music

2013

Factors determining and influencing the perception of emotional expression of music include those related to music itself, to the listener, and to the context. Among the latter there is also music, as we rarely listen to a single piece. A simple experimental study has been carried out into the effect of music listened to immediately beforehand on the perception of the emotional expression of a musical piece. The following variables were involved: type of emotional expression of music conceived in terms of a most basic sad-joyful dimension, initial and final mood of the listeners, their professional musical education vs. lack thereof, age, and gender. The subjects were students of three age …
