Polyvascular subclinical atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia: The role of cholesterol burden and gender

2019

International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIM:Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disease characterized by a heterogeneous phenotype. The assessment of cardiovascular (CV) risk is challenging for HeFH. Cholesterol burden (CB) allows to estimate the lifelong exposure to high levels of cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of subclinical atherosclerosis and the relationship between atherosclerosis and the CB in a sample of HeFH patients, focusing on sex-related differences.METHODS AND RESULTS:154 asymptomatic HeFH subjects underwent coronary-artery-calcium score (CACs) and Doppler ultrasound of carotid and femoral arteries. Yearly lipid pro…

Carotid atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic patients: Relationship with cardiovascular events

2001

Background and Aim: Extracranial cerebrovascular atherosclerosis is a common feature of hypercholesterolemia and carotid lesions are good predictors of cardiovascular events in the general population. Factors associated with the carotid damage of hypercholesterolemic patients and their relationships with the occurrence of clinical events are investigated in this study. Methods and Results: One hundred and seventeen cardiovascular event-free hypercholesterolemic subjects underwent a complete clinical examination to look for additional risk factors. A blood sample was collected for lipoprotein determination and an ultrasound high resolution B-mode imaging examination of the common carotid art…

Coping with continual danger: assessing alertness to visual disturbances in crucian carp following long-term exposure to chemical alarm signals.

2013

Chemical alarm signals in fish are passively released into the water from ruptured epidermal cells, and induce instant fright responses in conspecifics. Fish also display alarm responses to injured heterospecific skin, as well as to scent of piscivorous predators that have ingested prey. A conspicuous alertness to visual disturbances has also been observed in fish following long-term exposure to extracts of filtered, homogenized skin, but the chemical inducers of such vigilance are actually unknown. We tested if a continual exposure to water-soluble alarm signals, from either conspecifics or heterospecifics, affects alertness of fish. Based on previous experience, it was assumed that alertn…

Hexanuclear Cu3O–3Cu triazole-based units as novel core motifs for high nuclearity copper(ii) frameworks

2019

The asymmetric 3,5-disubstituted 1,2,4-triazole ligand H2V (5-amino-3-picolinamido-1,2,4-triazole) by reaction with an excess of Cu(II) perchlorate (Cu : H2V being 12 : 1) has produced a novel hexanuclear {Cu6(m3-O/H)(HV/V)3} fragment, with one triangular Cu3(m3-O/H) group connected to three peripheral single Cu(II) ions through a cis–cis–trans bridging mode of the ligand, which is the building block of the three structures described here: one hexanuclear, [Cu6(m3-O)(HV)3(ClO4)7(H2O)9]$8H2O (1), one dodecanuclear, [Cu12(m3-O)2(V)6(ClO4)5(H2O)18](ClO4)3$6H2O (2), and one tetradecanuclear 1D-polymer, {[Cu14(m3-OH)2(V)6(HV)(ClO4)11(H2O)20](ClO4)2$14H2O}n (3), the last two containing hexanuclea…

Conductance in isodielectric mixtures. III.i-butyronitrile with chlorobenzene,o-dichlorobenzene,p-dichlorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, andn-pentanol

1975

The conductance of tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylboride, picrate, perchlorate, and nitrate has been measured at 25°C in mixtures ofi-butyronitrile with chlorobenzene,o-dichlorobenzene,p-dicholorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, andn-pentanol covering the range of dielectric constants 10≤D≤20. In these mixtures of polar solvents, both association constants and ionic mobilities depend on ion-solvent interaction energies and on free volume in a manner that is specific for each system. This failure of the primitive model (rigid charged spheres in a continuum) is shown to be the consequence of short-range spatial and energetic interactions between ions and adjacent solvent molecules.

Supramolecular 2D/3D isomerism in a compound containing heterometallic Cu(II)2Co(II) nodes and dicyanamide bridges.

2014

Three new heterometallic copper(II)-cobalt(II) complexes [(CuL(2))2Co{dca}2]·H2O(1), [(CuL(1))2Co{dca}2]n (2a), and [(CuL(1))2Co{dca}2]n (2b) [dca(-) = dicyanamide = N(CN)2(-)] have been synthesized by reacting the "metallo-ligand" [CuL(1)] or [CuL(2)] with cobalt(II) perchlorate and sodium dicyanamide in methanol-water medium (where H2L(1) = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine and H2L(2) = N,N'-bis(α-methylsalicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine). The three complexes have been structurally and magnetically characterized. Complex 1 is a discrete trinuclear species in which two metallo-ligands coordinate to a cobalt(II) ion through the phenoxido oxygen atoms along with two terminally coordina…

It crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1 with cell constants: a =7.6793(6), b =9.238(2), c =10.007(2) A, α=83.80(1), β=68.37(1) and γ=69.44(1)°; V =617.7(3) A 3 , D (calc., Z =2)=1.80 g cm −3 , M r =667.6, F (000)=336, λ, (Mo Kα)=0.71069 A, μ (Mo Kα)=17.895 cm −1 and T =295 K. A total of 3587 data were collected over the range of 1 ⩽ θ ⩽ 30°; of these, 2391 (independent and with I⩾2σ( I )) were used in the structural analysis. The final R and R w residuals were 0.049 and 0.053, respective…

Do too many choices have negative consequences? An empirical review

2013

Various experiments demonstrated that having too much choice has negative consequences on the motivation to choose and on the satisfaction with the chosen option. However, the literature reports conflicting results showing that choosing from large assortments has advantages. This paper reviews the main empirical results in favor and against the negative effect of too much choice and identifies possible directions for further research.
