In 36 south Finnish lakes, the number of species, as well as the cyprinids:percids ratio, was dependent, not only on total phosphorus (TP), but also on lake size. Total fish biomass and cyprinid biomass increased along the TP gradient, whereas the dependence of percid biomass was less evident. Perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus strongly dominated mesotrophic lakes; in eutrophic lakes the proportion of other cyprinids and percids, such as white bream Blicca bjoerkna, bream Abramis brama, pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca and ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus, increased. Predator odor recognition and antipredatory response in fish: does the prey know the predator diel rhythm?

We studied in a laboratory experiment using stream tanks if two percid prey fish, the perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus), can recognize and respond to increased predation risk using odors of two piscivores, the pike (Esox lucius) and the burbot (Lota lota). Burbot is night-active most of the year but pike hunts predominantly visually whenever there is enough light. Perch is a common day-active prey of pike and dark-active ruffe that of burbot. We predicted that besides recognizing the predator odors, the prey species would respond more strongly to odors of the predator which share the same activity pattern. Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) were sampled in April, from May to June and at the end of August to test whether the current season (i.e. feeding conditions) affects the fishes’ stomach size (i.e. volume and weight). A wide range of size data were analysed to reveal the relationship between fish size (length and weight) and stomach size. No significant differences in length-specific stomach volume or stomach weight were found in fish sampled at different times of the year. Growth of pikeperch in relation to lake characteristics: total phosphorus, water colour, lake area and depth

The growth of pikeperch Sander lucioperca was studied in 41 lakes in central Finland. The backcalculated average total length of 3 year-old pikeperch was used as an indicator of growth. The growth correlated positively with total phosphorus and water colour and negatively with lake area and depth. The reason for differences in growth may be differences in the amount of suitable food, foraging success or temperature dynamics in different lakes.
Polychlorinated biphenyls and some pesticides in perch (Perca Fluviatilis) from inland waters of Latvia

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), DDT - related substances, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were analysed in perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Latvian lakes and rivers. DDE is present in the highest concentrations in all samples; 62–170 ng/g lipid weight in perch from rural areas and 460 ng/g in perch from the Riga area. Individual dominating PCB congeners were in the range 16–45 ng/g and 200–210 ng/g, respectively. The degree of contamination of rural areas in Latvia of these organohalogen substances is in the same range as in background areas in Sweden. Riga, the major urban area in Latvia, is shown to be more polluted with PCBs than other areas in Latvia.

Argulus foliaceus, an obligate fish ectoparasite, can search for its hosts in both light and dark conditions and uses vision in the light. We have examined what searching mode is used at night, when the infection rate was at its highest, and which stimuli produced by the fish are most important. A change of illumination produced a clear difference in the searching behaviour of adult Argulus females. The mean swimming speed and the area explored were 3-4 times higher in the dark, when the parasite employed a cruising search strategy. We compared parasite communities in fish taken from a polluted lake (L. Vatia) and two control lakes before (1986) and after (1995) nine years of markedly reduced chemical and nutrient loading from a pulpmill in central Finland. Discriminant analyses of the 1995 data, using a function based on the 1986 data, showed that the parasite communities in the fish from the two control lakes had changed relatively little, whereas those from L. Vatia had converged on those from the mesotrophic control lake, indicating substantial recovery from the effects of pollution. Only a few species of parasites provided evidence for recovery. Although parasite communities have been studied extensively in recent years, spatial and temporal variation in factors affecting the communities has received less attention. This paper examined the similarity of parasite assemblages of perch (Perca fluviatilis) in 18 locations within a single lake in relation to geographical distance and temporal dynamics in the host and parasite populations.
