Non-Linearity Extremum in Niobium Doped Potassium Tantalate

We report non-linear dielectric measurements in the KTaO 3 :Nb system (x Nb ≤ 0.05). The non-linear susceptibility diverges at low temperatures and reaches maximum values in the intermediate range (0.0075 ≤ x Nb ≤ 0.02). To account for this extremum non linearity, we propose a model of temperature dependent clusters which fits with a number of experimental reports. We also suggest that this model may be applied to the related compounds SrTiO 3 :Ca and KTaO 3 :Na.

Prediction of Soil Formation as a Function of Age Using the Percolation Theory Approach

Recent modeling and comparison with field results showed that soil formation by chemical weathering, either from bedrock or unconsolidated material, is limited largely by solute transport. Chemical weathering rates are proportional to solute velocities. Nonreactive solute transport described by non-Gaussian transport theory appears compatible with soil formation rates. This change in understanding opens new possibilities for predicting soil production and depth across orders of magnitude of time scales. Visible parts of fractal percolation

We study dimensional properties of visible parts of fractal percolation in the plane. Provided that the dimension of the fractal percolation is at least 1, we show that, conditioned on non-extinction, almost surely all visible parts from lines are 1-dimensional. Furthermore, almost all of them have positive and finite Hausdorff measure. We also verify analogous results for visible parts from points. These results are motivated by an open problem on the dimensions of visible parts.
High performance composites containing perfluoropolyethers-functionalized carbon-based nanoparticles: Rheological behavior and wettability

Abstract Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) based composites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB) modified by perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) have been formulated. All composites show a segregated morphology with nanofillers selectively localized at the polymer particle–particle interface. Connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets

We present a study on connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets by means of Monte Carlo simulation. We interpret our results using a contact-volume argument based on an effective single--particle cell model. It is commonly assumed that the percolation threshold of anisotropic objects scales as their inverse aspect ratio. While this rule has been shown to hold for rod-like particles, we find that for hard plate-like particles the percolation threshold is non-monotonic in the aspect ratio. Despite a millennial history and the ubiquitous presence of cement in everyday life, the molecular processes underlying its hydration behavior, like the formation of calcium–silicate–hydrate (C–S–H), the binding phase of concrete, are mostly unexplored. Using time-resolved potentiometry and turbidimetry combined with dynamic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and cryo-TEM, we demonstrate C–S–H formation to proceed via a complex two-step pathway. Study of percolation and clustering in supercritical water-CO2 mixtures

The microscopic structure of supercritical water-CO(2) mixture is investigated by neutron diffraction experiments exploiting the isotopic HD substitution. The investigated water reach mixtures are in the liquidlike region of the phase diagram, according to the behavior of the radial distribution functions, yet a reduction of the average number of hydrogen bonds, compared to equivalent states of pure water, is found. As a consequence, the average dimension of water clusters is reduced and the system stays below the percolation threshold. Rigidity of random networks of stiff fibers in the low-density limit.

Rigidity percolation is analyzed in two-dimensional random networks of stiff fibers. As fibers are randomly added to the system there exists a density threshold ${q=q}_{\mathrm{min}}$ above which a rigid stress-bearing percolation cluster appears. This threshold is found to be above the connectivity percolation threshold ${q=q}_{c}$ such that ${q}_{\mathrm{min}}=(1.1698\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.0004)q}_{c}.$ The transition is found to be continuous, and in the universality class of the two-dimensional central-force rigidity percolation on lattices.
