Laparoscopic-assisted Retropubic Midurethral Sling Placement: A Technique to Avoid Major Complications

2015

Abstract Study Objective To describe a technique for the safe placement of retropubic midurethral slings in patients undergoing concomitant laparoscopic surgery in order to avoid major complications associated with this procedure such as bladder perforation and retropubic hematomas. Design Step-by-step video demonstration of the technique. Setting A university tertiary care hospital. Patients Patients with an indication for retropubic midurethral sling placement because of recurrent stress urinary incontinence, intrinsic sphincter deficiency, or severe pelvic organ prolapse in whom a concomitant laparoscopic surgery has to be performed for other medical conditions. Intervention Laparoscopic…

Localization of Congenital Tegmen Tympani Defects

2007

Objective: This study sets out to demonstrate the normal developmental steps of the tegmen tympani and thus explains the typical localization of congenital tegmental defects. Specimens: For this study, 79 macerated and formalin-fixed human temporal bones from 14th fetal week to adults were observed and prepared. Intervention: Macroscopic and microscopic examination of the prenatal and postnatal changes of the tegmen tympani during its development. Main Outcome Measure: Temporal bones from 14th fetal week to adults underwent descriptive anatomic studies to understand the normal development of the tegmen tympani and to find a possible cause of its congenital defects. Results: The medial part …

[Myringoplasties. A retrospective analysis of our surgical outcomes].

2010

Objective: The aim of this study was to present myringoplasty case results in our department. Different factors were studied to confirm their prognostic value. Materials and methods: A total of 126 myringoplasties from 2006 until 2010 were reviewed, collecting patient-related details, descriptions of the anatomical defect and the most interesting surgical aspects. Results: Subtotal perforations (35.7%) were the most frequently observed. In 89.7% of the operations, the transcanal approach was preferred. The medial technique (underlay) to the tympanic membrane was the most performed (97.6%). Cartilage was the principal graft used (82.5%). Complete closure of the perforation was obtained in 71…

Endoscopic Procedures through the Foramen Interventriculare of Monro under Stereotactical Conditions

1994

The foramen interventriculare of Monro is an anatomical narrowness for the endoscopic access to the third ventricle. The effective mechanical angle to pass the foramen interventriculare from a frontal bore hole depends on the diameter in the plane of entrance, the depth of the foramen, and the diameter of the endoscope. Under the pathological conditions of a hydrocephalus internus the foramen interventriculare is enlarged. By means of stereotactical guidance, it is possible to reach the third ventricle accurately without damaging anatomical structures around the foramen interventriculare. The endoscopic technique under stereotactical guidance using a rigid endoscope is sufficient and safe t…

The prognostic value of mucociliary clearance in predicting success in tympanoplasty

1993

AbstractMucociliary and equipressive eustachian tube functions have been studied, using saccharin solution (five per cent sodium saccharinate) and tubal manometry respectively, in 58 ears with chronic disease undergoing tympanoplasty. The position of the perforation site determines the results as the poorest results are obtained from the posterior ones, positive cases (47 per cent) and mean transport time (37.7 minutes), compared to the greater percentage of positive cases (86 per cent) and mean transport time (22.2 minutes) for anterior perforations. When both parameters are analysed together there is a direct relationship between normal equipressive function and normal mucociliary transpor…

Bowel perforation in Crohn's Disease: correlation between CDAI and Clavien-Dindo scores

2018

Background Many studies have elaborated different kind of activity indices for Crohn's Disesase (CD) with the endpoint of univocally measure and evaluate the gravity of its lesions and symptoms. Aim Purpose of this work is to study and define the correlation that runs between the preoperative score obtained at the Crohn's Disease Activity Index, the occurrence of postoperative complications that will require re-intervention and the severity of the postoperative lesions evaluated using the Clavien-Dindo score. Patients and methods We have collected and analyzed data from 23 patients (12 males, 11 females) that in a period that spans from 2010 to 2016 had been recovered in our Operative Unit …

Surgically verified variations in the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery

1991

✓ Two patients with rare variations of the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery are presented. One patient had a perforation of the optic tract by an abnormal course of the A1 segment, and the other harbored an aneurysm of the A1 segment running below the optic nerve. The authors present a summary of A1 segment variations described in the literature.

Pancreatic Endoscopic Sphincterotomy in Patients with Chronic Pancreatitis: A Single-Center Experience in 171 Consecutive Patients

2002

Background and Study Aims: In recent years, interest in endoscopic therapy techniques for pancreatic diseases has been constantly increasing. The aim of the present study was to assess the technical success, technique, and complications of endoscopic pancreatic sphincterotomy (EPS) in patients with chronic pancreatitis. Patients and Methods: A total of 171 patients with chronic pancreatitis and abdominal complaints were identified in whom at least one attempt at EPS was carried out. During the procedure, sphincterotomy was carried out using a guide-wire sphincterotome or a needle-knife papillotome. Patients were followed up after EPS for at least 24 h, including clinical symptoms and labora…

Laparoscopy is an available alternative to open surgery in the treatment of perforated peptic ulcers: A retrospective multicenter study

2018

Abstract Background Perforated peptic ulcers (PPU) remain one of the most frequent causes of death. Their incidence are largely unchanged accounting for 2–4% of peptic ulcers and remain the second most frequent abdominal cause of perforation and of indication for gastric emergency surgery. The minimally invasive approach has been proposed to treat PPU however some concerns on the offered advantages remain. Methods Data on 184 consecutive patients undergoing surgery for PPU were collected. Likewise, perioperative data including shock at admission and interval between admission and surgery to evaluate the Boey’s score. It was recorded the laparoscopic or open treatments, the type of surgical …

Transcrestal sinus lift and implant placement using the sinus balloon technique

2011

Objective: A description is made of transcrestal sinus lift using the sinus balloon technique, evaluating the bone height achieved and implant success one year after prosthetic loading. Material and method: Between January and July 2007, transcrestal sinus lift using the sinus balloon technique for dental implant placement was carried out in 6 patients. A panoramic X-ray study and maxillary computed tomography scan were carried out before the operation, in order to discard possible sinus pathology. During the intervention, the integrity of the sinus membrane was evaluated using a Medi Pack Pal endoscope (Farol Store and Co., Tuttlingen, Germany), and the intraoperative complications were an…
