Engaged teams deliver better service performance in innovation climates

2016

Building on the interactionist approach and the consideration of service organizations as open-systems, this study examines the moderating role of team climate for innovation on the relationship between team engagement and service performance. The sample consisted of 599 customers, 344 boundary employees, and 86 supervisors nested in 86 teams from 60 hotels. Multilevel analyses showed significant positive direct relationships between team engagement and service quality indicators. We also found a consistent moderating role of climate for innovation on the association between team engagement and different service performance indicators (functional and relational service quality, overall sati…

UWSIO: Towards automatic orchestration for the deployment of 5G monitoring services from bare metal

2018

The next generation mobile networks 5G are currently being intensively developed and standardized globally, with commercial prototyping 5G connections already emerging. At the 5G system level, one of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) defining 5G is substantially reduced service creation time for 5G network operators and/or service providers to increase the system efficiency and thus reduce operational costs. In this work, we focus on realize this challenging KPI in terms of speedy creation of monitoring services for 5G operators from scratch (no operating system pre-installed). A new 5G infrastructure orchestrator UWSIO is proposed to achieve fully automated deployment of 5G monitoring …

Measuring the eco-efficiency of wastewater treatment plants under data uncertainty

2018

Abstract Eco-efficiency assessment is a useful tool for improving the sustainability of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, it is a complex task that requires the integration of several performance indicators into a single index. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is established as a highly effective methodology for achieving this as it permits the integration of the service value, resource consumption and environmental impact variables as the desirable outputs, inputs and undesirable outputs, respectively. However, traditional DEA models omit uncertainties in the data that are likely to result in biased conclusions. This study pioneers the assessment of the eco-efficiency of WWTPs w…

Innovative public governance through cloud computing

2014

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze challenges and to discuss proposed solutions for innovative public governance through cloud computing. Innovative technologies, such as federation of services and cloud computing, can greatly contribute to the provision of e-government services, through scaleable and flexible systems. Furthermore, they can facilitate in reducing costs and overcoming public information segmentation. Nonetheless, when public agencies use these technologies, they encounter several associated organizational and technical changes, as well as significant challenges. Design/methodology/approach – We followed a multidisciplinary perspective (social, be…

Assessing the quality of service to customers provided by water utilities: A synthetic index approach

2017

Abstract Currently, water and sewer companies face the challenge of improving their quality of service to customers (QSC). Performance indicators are essential to monitor and benchmark the QSC of water companies; however, individual indicators do not provide a holistic evaluation of the quality of water and sewer services provided to customers. This study proposes an innovative QSC index based on distance-function techniques that makes it possible to compare changes in the QSC of water companies among locations and temporal periods. A case study assesses changes in QSC for a sample of Chilean water and sewer companies from 2007 to 2014. The results show that in spite of the efforts made by …

A Set of Key Performance Indicators for Solar Heating and Cooling Systems

2017

The application of solar heating and cooling systems for building air-conditioning actually shows a significant potential of exploitation, particularly in sunny regions. The choice whether or not to apply such technologies in different climates should be based on the assessment of their energy/environmental, economic and social sustainability, as well as their technical characteristics as reliability, durability and energy efficiency. To support researchers and decision-makers in the selection of the best solar air-conditioning solution in a specific geographic and energy context, the paper proposes a set of technical, economic, energy/environmental and social key performance indicators. Th…

Toward solutions for energy efficiency

2020

Abstract The tariff setting for district heating (DH) services is a hard regulatory procedure. This chapter is devoted to development of the simple but sufficiently accurate methodology for fast and objective evaluation of the actual costs of DH to optimize the regulatory process and to set adequate tariffs on heat production and transmission. The developed methodology is based on the data sets of Latvian DH providers, but the methodological principles are applicable in another area too. Investigation of heat production drivers and following simulation revealed the key performance indicators (KPIs): fuel type and price. By usage of intelligent benchmarking data mining methods and mathematic…

A performance based approach for the analysis of urban water distribution systems under drought conditions

2009

The present study proposes some performance indicators for analysing urban water distribution system characterised by intermittent supply service. Specific indicators have been proposed for investigating the reduction of quality of water service under resources scarcity conditions. A modelling procedure has been implemented in order to allow for analysing complex network schemes in which users self adapt to scarcity conditions. The procedure has been applied to analyse the performance of an existing supply system in Palermo (Italy). The network and users’ behaviour in intermittent distribution conditions have been monitored in order to calibrate the model and verify the reliability of the p…

A hierarchical framework for the measurement of maintenance efficacy and efficiency using performance indicators

2014

Maintenance plays an important role in achieving the organizational goals so that the measurement of its effectiveness and efficiency has become an essential element of industrial strategy. In literature several Maintenance Key Performance Indicators (MKPIs) are proposed but none structured approach is suggested to select the best set of MKPIs able to synthetically describe a specific maintenance context. The paper proposes a structured methodology for the maintenance performance measurement by means of MKPIs. Firstly, a multi-level hierarchical framework able to synthesize the most meaningful perspectives affecting the performance of the maintenance process is designed. Successively, some …
