La capilla de la Virgen de Campanar en Valencia: tradición popular erigida en erudita retórica visual

2018

This chapel forms part of the parochial church of Campanar, which belongs to the municipality of Valencia. The Virgen de Campanar (Virgin of Campanar) is an image executed in alabaster, discovered on the subfloor of the church of this place on February 19th, 1596, by some construction workers who were undertaking some remodeling at that time. From that moment forward it began to be worshipped by the masses as a miraculous image. Among its alleged properties we find the mysterious fact that powder from its plaster had miraculous effects: it was taken dissolved in water to cure the sick or to assure a healthy birth for pregnant women, and it even calmed storms at sea if it was thrown into the…

Measure of a limestone weathering degree using Laser Scanner.

2013

The weathering degree of the building materials and natural stones is generally quantified as the decrement of some mechanical features that can be measured experimentally by means of compressive tests or point load tests in the laboratory or Schmidt hammer tests carried out in situ. Such destructive or damaging tests are unacceptable in case of cultural heritage since even small amounts of damage must be avoided. This work shows a correlation between Schmidt hammer rebound values and the reflectivity that is detected by means of terrestrial scanner laser; therefore it allows assessing the weathering degree of buildings or stones in situ. The results demonstrate that such an investigation c…

Canned Emotions. Effects of Genre and Audience Reaction on Emotions

2017

Laughter is said to be contagious. Maybe this is why TV stations often choose to add so-called canned laughter to their shows. Questionable as this practice may be, observers seem to like it. If such a simple manipulation, assumingly by inducing positive emotion, can change our attitudes toward the film, does the opposite manipulation work as well? Does a negative sound-track, such as screaming voices, have comparable effects in the opposite direction? We designed three experiments with a total of 110 participants to test whether scream-tracks have comparable effects on the evaluation of film sequences as do laugh-tracks. Experiment 1 showed segments of comedies, scary, and neutral films an…

It deals with various aspects such as the structure, the personal involvement of the owners in the design of their devices, the purpose andmanners of displaying wit employed in their composition, etc., and concludes that there are no noticeable differences between women's devices and the masculine ones, except that the impreseof ladies crafted for special occasions (to display i…

Games that People Played in Early Modern Europa and the Emblem

2014

ABSTRACT: This study explores the existence and readership of board games in 16th and 17th century Europe of an emblematic nature. Such games may have derived from the conversation games featured in Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier (1528), a work which includes a passage on emblems. In the Spanish tradition, the Filosofia cortesana moralizada (1587) of Alonso de Barros is a book of instructions on how to play this highly emblematic courtly board game, the board of which has unfortunately been lost. Some English emblems of the 17th century also include emblems likely based on Castiglione that depict the courtier as both warrior and scholar. Future studies need to clarify the…
