Association of chronic periodontitis with white blood cell and platelet count: a Case Control Study
2013
Objectives:The objective of the study was to determine whether plasma levels of white blood corpuscles (WBCs) and platelets were altered in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls. Study Design:A total of 120 subjects, 60 with chronic periodontitis and 60 with healthy periodontium of age group 30-50 years were selected for the study. Oral hygiene status and pocket probing depth were measured. During clinical evaluation, venous blood samples were taken to analyze the WBC and platelet counts. Statistical analysis was utilized to compare differences across various groups. Results:The WBC count was higher in patients with chronic periodontitis when compared with control…
Periodontitis, coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction: treat one, benefit all
2020
: Periodontal disease is conventionally defined as an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth (i.e. gum and periodontium). Recent statistics show that the prevalence of this condition is continuously growing worldwide, thus raising severe healthcare concerns, not only for local problems emerging from poor oral health, but also for the potential risk of developing systemic complications. Therefore, this article aims to provide an update on the intriguing association between periodontitis, coronary heart disease (CHD) and/or myocardial infarction (MI). Taken together, the available published information seems to support the existence of a significant …
Histological study of human periodontal tissue following biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT)
2020
Background The aim of this study was to conduct histological analysis of a human tooth resected with the periodontal insertion apparatus intact following treatment using biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT). Material and methods This descriptive histological dento-periodontal study used an anterior tooth extracted with the surrounding periodontal tissues intact, following prosthetic restoration with BOPT. The sample patient was recruited from among those attending the Department of Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Valencia (Spain). Eight serial sections of the restored tooth were processed. The relative location and histological character…
Microvascular periodontal alterations: A possible relationship between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
2007
Abstract BACKGROUND: Microvascular involvements represent one of the first steps in many autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in periodontal microcirculation between healthy subjects and patients suffering from RA. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects and 30 patients suffering from RA were examined. The patients who showed conditions known to compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertension, pharmacological treatments, were not included in the group of healthy patients. All the patients were non-smokers. Periodontal capillaroscopy was used to investigate the characteristics of microcirculation. Visibility, cou…
