Urban Boundaries and Innovative Scenarios

2021

The New Peripheries section of the Ociam International Comparison Exhibition gathers eighteen panels conceived by different authors invited to define their own view on the theme of fragility in contexts of marginality. Each proposal declined the theme of the New Peripheries according to its own original point of view. A collection of different looks capable of reading and reinterpreting the conditions in which the suburbs today find themselves, able to build a privileged observatory from which to look, observe and scrutinise not only the current conditions of the suburbs, but to glimpse their potential in the strategic role they can play today in the urban transformation processes of the ci…

Favara Futures: Research Workshop

2018

In a research project between the University of Palermo and Leibniz Universität Hannover, “Dynamics of Periphery” were discussed in a workshop in Palermo. These conceptual approaches were combined with a research workshop in Favara with master’s students from both universities; in collaboration with the municipality of Favara and with FARM Cultural Park Favara. These workshops were funded with the University Dialogue Programme Southern Europe of the DAAD. The transversal research between architecture, urban design, arts, local and regional development highlights the need and the potential of new ways of integrating “Dynamics of Periphery” into debates and policies about the futures of habit…

Palermo Metro-Peripheries: The Role of Peripheries in a Metropolitan Perspective

2018

The deep change in functional, political, and symbolic relations between core and peripheries in European metropolitan dynamics has blurred the current categories of “periphery” and “core”. The periphery is no longer a homogeneous reality, but a dynamic and fragmented urban landscape. The institution of new territorial bodies in Italy, with the metropolitan cities and new forms of institutional collaboration between territorial bodies, is a new political framework that calls for new solutions in regional policy-making in order to overcome the radial (core-centric) urban model: peripheries are not longer satellites of core cities' development but realities that, in a wider view, have a new s…

Aligning Inner Peripheries with rural development in Italy: Territorial evidence to support policy contextualization

2021

Abstract Inner Peripheries is a recent concept based on both peripherality and marginality features, thus far from the commonly adopted geographical notion of periphery. Inner Peripheries are fragile territories covering rural Europe, which suffer from depopulation, low economic potential, and weak territorial cohesion. However, these territories are extremely important for the provision of goods and services, and the stewardship of natural and semi-natural environments. Such dichotomous condition poses several challenges for planning in the EU context, particularly regarding the implementation of the Rural Development Policy. Therefore, current planning needs to contextualize the policy im…

THE INNER TERRITORIES: FROM THE MARGINS TO COSMOPOLITAN CENTRES

2021

The article proposes a reflection on the cosmopolitanism linked to the “marginalised” parts of Italy, where social, economic, and infrastructural decline and the consequent abandonment of places are met with stories of renewal in which the relationship between inhabitants and foreigners constitutes the basis for starting local development processes able to activate new urban networks based on cultural interaction and to generate resilient relations, welcoming processes, and new communities. In this new “cosmopolitan nomadism”, we can recognise an opportunity for territories and communities to regenerate spatial and social relations: innovation and culture, permanent exchange, and neutral en…

Body, Nature, Language: Artisans to Artists in the Commodification of Authenticity

1969

This article examines processes of authenticating and selling handicrafts at the conjuncture of cultural pride and economic profit in two peripheral sites (Finnish Sámiland and rural Québec), under shared conditions of late capitalism and globalising political economies. These conditions (re)structure traditionalist and modernist discourses about artisans' historical bodies, their connections to the local land (nature), and how they interactionally authenticate and sell their products through language. Under these conditions, the commodification of authenticity pushes artisans and handicrafts beyond being emblems of national belonging and collective tradition, and toward individualised, art…

In-Transition Processes

2018

As products of in-transition processes and of a haphazard transformation “model”, dynamic and in evolution, peripheries are muscling their way in as landscapes laden with ambiguity and problems, but also at the same time with possibilities and latency.

The Power of the Young Town

2017

In Italy, after the Second World War, according to Fanfani and Tupini’s laws (1949), INA-casa and its procuring entities’ ventures made a motor of urban renewal from the enthusiasm and the commitment of many entrepreneurs and public administrators. In Palermo, the agricultural lands began to include new neighbourhoods that quickly merged with the historic and nineteenth-twentieth century centre. In the fifties, between the town and its geographic limits (the mountains of the Corona dei Colli) a beltway has been hypothesized. It was a founding board (Culotta, 2005). In the sixties, it was the spine of an expanding urban fabric that absorbed citrus groves, vineyards, olive groves, field of fl…

Il bosco in aree interne. Risorsa locale o paesaggio ludico?

2021
