Mo(CO)6 dissociation on Cu(111) stimulated by a Scanning Tunneling Microscope

2013

Abstract The surface of Cu(111) was exposed to molybdenum hexacarbonyl Mo(CO)6 with monolayer coverage at temperature 160 K and studied by a Scanning Tunneling Microscope. The monolayer structure has a hexagonal arrangement and forms a (√7 × √7) R19 superlattice on the copper (111) plane. Upon repeated scanning the monolayer is transformed into a (1 × 2) superstructure with 3-fold oriented domains. The domains of (1 × 2) superstructure can change orientation under scanning according to 3-fold surface symmetry. From analysis of the domain mobility, it follows that CO groups of carbonyl fragments are organized in the (1 × 2) superstructure conditioning the domain reorientation. The observed s…

Kinetic power of quasars and statistical excess of MOJAVE superluminal motions

2012

The MOJAVE survey contains 101 quasars with a total of 354 observed radio components that are different from the radio cores, among which 95% move with apparent projected superluminal velocities with respect to the core, and 45% have projected velocities larger than 10c (with a maximum velocity 60c). Doppler boosting effects are analyzed to determine the statistics of the superluminal motions. We integrate over all possible values of the Lorentz factor the values of the kinetic energy corresponding to each component. The calculation of the mass in the ejection is carried out by assuming the minimum energy state. This kinetic energy is multiplied by the frequency at which the portions of the…

A sensitive study of the peculiar jet structure HST-1 in M87

2013

To obtain a better understanding of the location and mechanisms for the production of the gamma-ray emission in jets of AGN we present a detailed study of the HST-1 structure, 0.8 arcsec downstream the jet of M87, previously identified as a possible candidate for TeV emission. HST-1 shows a very peculiar structure with superluminal as well as possible stationary sub-components, and appears to be located in the transition from a parabolic to a conical jet shape, presumably leading to the formation of a recollimation shock. This scenario is supported by our new RHD simulations in which the interaction of a moving component with a recollimation shock leads to the appearance of a new superlumin…

Apparent superluminal core expansion and limb brightening in the candidate neutrino blazar TXS 0506+056

2019

IceCube has reported a very-high-energy neutrino (IceCube-170922A) in a region containing the blazar TXS 0506+056. Correlated {\gamma}-ray activity has led to the first high-probability association of a high-energy neutrino with an extragalactic source. This blazar has been found to be in a radio outburst during the neutrino event. We have performed target-of-opportunity VLBI imaging observations at 43 GHz frequency with the VLBA two and eight months, respectively, after the neutrino event. We produced two images of TXS 0506+056 with angular resolutions of (0.2x1.1) mas and (0.2x0.5) mas, respectively. The source shows a compact, high brightness temperature core (albeit not approaching the …

Acoustic properties of nanoscale oxide heterostructures probed by UV Raman spectroscopy

2007

We study high quality molecular-beam epitaxy grown BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlat-tices using ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy. In the low energy spectral region, acoustic phonon doublets are observed. These are due to the artificial superlattice periodicity and consequent folding of the acoustic phonon dispersion. From the study of samples with different BaTiO3/SrTiO3 layer thicknesses the effective sound velocities within each of the layers are obtained.

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia: new insights and guidance for clinicians to improve detection and clinical management. A position paper fr…

2014

Item does not contain fulltext AIMS: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH) is a rare life-threatening condition characterized by markedly elevated circulating levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and accelerated, premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD). Given recent insights into the heterogeneity of genetic defects and clinical phenotype of HoFH, and the availability of new therapeutic options, this Consensus Panel on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) critically reviewed available data with the aim of providing clinical guidance for the recognition and management of HoFH. METHODS AND RESULTS: Early diagn…

LDL apheresis in a homozygous familial hypercholesterolemic child aged 4.5.

1997

Preliminary experience with the efficacy and safety of dextran sulfate cellulose low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis for the treatment of a 4.5-year-old girl with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and coronary artery disease is reported. The decrease of the most atherogenic apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and lipoprotein(a) (Lp [a]), were in the ranges of 63.1-68.7%, and 52.5-58.6%, respectively. The child tolerated LDL apheresis without any clinically significant complications. Therefore, she was submitted to a long-term program of treatment at intervals of 15 days. The experience suggests the possibility of an early beginning of extracorp…

Engineering the hypersonic phononic band gap of hybrid Bragg stacks.

2012

We report on the full control of phononic band diagrams for periodic stacks of alternating layers of poly(methyl methacrylate) and porous silica combining Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. These structures exhibit large and robust on-axis band gaps determined by the longitudinal sound velocities, densities, and spacing ratio. A facile tuning of the gap width is realized at oblique incidence utilizing the vector nature of the elastic wave propagation. Off-axis propagation involves sagittal waves in the individual layers, allowing access to shear moduli at nanoscale. The full theoretical description discerns the most important features of the hypersonic one…

Lack of Detrimental Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry Toxins on the Insect Predator Chrysoperla carnea : a Toxicological, Histopathological, and …

2006

ABSTRACT The effect of Cry proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis on the green lacewing ( Chrysoperla carnea ) was studied by using a holistic approach which consisted of independent, complementary experimental strategies. Tritrophic experiments were performed, in which lacewing larvae were fed Helicoverpa armigera larvae reared on Cry1Ac, Cry1Ab, or Cry2Ab toxins. In complementary experiments, a predetermined amount of purified Cry1Ac was directly fed to lacewing larvae. In both experiments no effects on prey utilization or fitness parameters were found. Since binding to the midgut is an indispensable step for toxicity of Cry proteins to known target insects, we hypothesized that specific bind…
