Efficiency Maximization of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators Coupled to Wind Turbines

2007

In this paper a control algorithm for the efficiency improvement of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG), the relative simulations and their results are presented. The proposed algorithm reduces the losses of the generator without affecting its performances. In details, after a description of a dynamic model of the PMSG, which has been modified in order to take into account the iron losses, the basic methodologies to obtain the loss minimization are presented and discussed. Many simulations of a specific PMSG employing the proposed algorithm were carried out and are presented. The results of these simulations show that enhancement of the efficiency up to 3% and more can be reached…

The use of sea waves for generation of electrical energy and Hydrogen

2009

Recently linear synchronous generator for the exploitation of sea wave energy has been proposed. That solution does not require reactive power to magnetize but needs permanent magnets to assure the excitation. The electrical energy generated by such a device must be converted and conditioned in order to match the instantaneous utility requirements and a power link from the sea to an interconnection is needed. In this paper in order to overcome that difficulty, the authors propose the use of the electrical energy generated to generate “in situ” hydrogen. As a result the output of the generation would be hydrogen that can be stored and used when needed The proposed electrical generator is a P…

Cogging torque comparison of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators with different stator windings

2017

This paper presents the comparison between the cogging torques produced by four IPMSGs (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators) with different stator winding configurations. More in detail, an IPMSG model, which is derived from a commercial geometry, is analyzed through means of a FEM (Finite Element Method) approach. Then, three more structures are determined and analyzed by adequately changing the number of stator slots of the basic IPMSG stator structure and by maintaining the same rotor configuration. From the obtained simulation results, the cogging torque components for each structure are determined and compared. From this comparison, it can be stated that the use of dissymm…

Finite-element performance comparison of IPMSMs with unsymmetrical double-layer windings

2017

This paper presents a comparison of the performances between IPMSMs (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) with a symmetrical and with two different types of unsymmetrical windings. The aim is to demonstrate that the adoption of slightly unsymmetrical windings does not significantly affect the performances of the machines, both in terms of cogging torque and torque/load angle characteristics, providing also the advantage of a higher possibility of choice in terms of slot number/poles ratio. More in particular, an IPMSM model (named IPMSM-1) derived from a commercial geometry equipped with a symmetrical winding is analyzed by using a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach. The simulat…

Experimental validation of a distribution theory based analysis of the effect of manufacturing tolerances on permanent magnet synchronous machines

2017

An experimental study on the effect of permanent magnet tolerances on the performances of a Tubular Linear Ferrite Motor is presented in this paper. The performances that have been investigated are: cogging force, end effect cogging force and generated thrust. It is demonstrated that: 1) the statistical variability of the magnets introduces harmonics in the spectrum of the cogging force; 2) the value of the end effect cogging force is directly linked to the values of then remanence field of the external magnets placed on the slider; 3) the generated thrust and its statistical distribution depend on the remanence field of the magnets placed on the translator.

Field Reconstruction for Modeling Multiple Faults in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors in Transient States

2021

Conventional field reconstruction model (FRM) for electrical machines has proved its main strength in efficient computations of magnetic fields and forces in healthy permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) or faulty machines in steady states. This study aims to develop a magnet library of different magnet defects and include inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) in the FRM for PMSM. The developed FRM can model a combination fault between ITSC, and magnet defect in a PMSM in transient states. Within the framework, an 8-turn ITSC was modelled in both finite element analysis (FEA) and FRM, and then identified by the extended Park’s vector approach. The air-gap magnetic field reproduced b…

Minimization of detent force in a 1 kW linear permanent magnet generator for the conversion of sea waves energy: Numerical and experimental validation

2015

Linear permanent magnet generators are widely considered for the direct conversion of energy contained in sea waves [1-3]. Both planar and tubular structures have been proposed [4-6] and all these structures present several advantages: relative high efficiency, simplicity of the structures, high sturdiness. However, as all other linear machines they present some drawbacks: oscillations in the movement, distortion in the generated electromotive force (emf), etc. In this paper we focus our attention on the parasitic oscillations of the translator which are caused by the presence of a high detent force. Detent force is generated by the fact that magnetic energy presents a minimum when the leng…

Evaluation of the power quality from a seawave power farm for different interconnection schemes

2007

In this paper we present an approach to the interconnection of a seawave power farm to the grid The generator type used in the farm is a Permanent Magnet (PM) linear generator driven from the seawaves that generates, therefore, highly distorted emfs. We propose and compare two possible ways to interconnect the farm to the grid. One is based on an approach where for each generator there is a conversion subsystem that permits the direct connection of each generator to the a.c. network, the other one is based on an ac.-d.c. converter that is connected to the generator, the converter is connected to a dc link that can receive the power from every unit and that can supply a dc-ac converter direc…
