Confinement of charged dust particles by a hybrid-type electric curtain

Abstract The hybrid-type electric curtain (HTEC) comprises a planar electric curtain and a perpendicular planar condenser. Serial cylindrical electrodes are supplied with AC voltage, whereas the condenser is fed with DC voltage. HTEC allows for better control of the particle position shift in space. The particle oscillation path within the hybrid curtain has been photographically analysed. The changing particle path was recorded according to a DC changing voltage value and a constant AC voltage value. The aim of the paper is to describe a successful method that enables one to experimentally determine the region where the particle can be stably oscillated.

A perpendicular graphene/ferromagnet electrode for spintronics

We report on the large-scale integration of graphene layers over a FePd perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) platform, targeting further downscaling of spin circuits. An L10 FePd ordered alloy showing both high magneto-crystalline anisotropy and a low magnetic damping constant, is deposited by magnetron sputtering. The graphene layer is then grown on top of it by large-scale chemical vapor deposition. A step-by-step study, including structural and magnetic analyses by x-ray diffraction and Kerr microscopy, shows that the measured FePd properties are preserved after the graphene deposition process. Antiferromagnetic NiO thickness dependent sign of the spin Hall magnetoresistance in γ-Fe2O3/NiO/Pt epitaxial stacks

We study the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in epitaxial γ–Fe2O3/NiO(001)/Pt stacks, as a function of temperature and thickness of the antiferromagnetic insulating NiO layer. Upon increasing the thickness of NiO from 0 nm to 10 nm, we detect a sign change of the SMR in the temperature range between 10 K and 280 K. This temperature dependence of the SMR in our stacks is different compared to that of previously studied yttrium iron garnet/NiO/Pt, as we do not find any peak or sign change as a function of temperature. X-ray imaging of the heating zone of non-normal incidence pumped XRL plasma

Soft x-ray emission, above 600 eV, from a grazing incidence pumped Ni-like Mo x-ray laser (GRIP-XRL) [1] plasma was investigated. Using a pinhole camera looking along the target surface, perpendicular to the direction of the XRL emission, spatially-resolved information was obtained with a resolution which was limited only by the pinhole size of 10 μm. The relative distance from the target surface to the plasma zone heated by th e picosecond pulse was investigated for different GRIP angles, energy ratios and delays between the plasma producing and the plasma heating pulses.

Polarimetric Plasmonic Sensing with Bowtie Nanoantenna Arrays

We propose a polarimetric plasmonic biosensor based on bowtie nanoantenna array transducers. Through numerical simulations, based on the finite element method (FEM), we study the phase retardation between the components of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the major axis of the bowties within the arrays. From a design for high volumetric sensitivity at a wavelength of 780 nm, sensitivities ∼5 rad/RIU is obtained, corresponding to a detection limit of ∼10−7 when using a polarimetric readout platform. Human enamel rods were made visible continuously from the dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) up to the enamel surface. From 12 teeth (1st and 2nd dentition) enamel blocks from the cervical third were prepared with perpendicular planes, embedded in resin, and ground down in steps of 15 microm parallel to the enamel surface. Enamel rods were made visible by acid etching (35% H3PO4, 45 s), sputtered and examined in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mode-coupling theory of the glass transition for confined fluids

We present a detailed derivation of a microscopic theory for the glass transition of a liquid enclosed between two parallel walls relying on a mode-coupling approximation. This geometry lacks translational invariance perpendicular to the walls, which implies that the density profile and the density-density correlation function depends explicitly on the distances to the walls.
