Investigation of Inspiratory Pressure-Volume Curves on Mechanically Ventilated Patients Using Least Square Polynomial Fit
1988
Abstract An on-line method for the registration of pressure volume 1 oops TrT mechanically ventilated patients was developed using a personal computer with analog/digital interface. A third order polynomial function was fitted to the measured inspiratory pressure volume pairs. The significance of the fitting procedure was calculated using regression ANOVA. The inflection point of the pressure-volume curve was determinated by calculating the root of the second derivative of the polynomial. The method was teseted on 20 patients without major pulmonary dysfunction and on 6 patients with severe ARDS.
Colloquium: Trapped ions as quantum bits -- essential numerical tools
2009
Trapped, laser-cooled atoms and ions are quantum systems which can be experimentally controlled with an as yet unmatched degree of precision. Due to the control of the motion and the internal degrees of freedom, these quantum systems can be adequately described by a well known Hamiltonian. In this colloquium, we present powerful numerical tools for the optimization of the external control of the motional and internal states of trapped neutral atoms, explicitly applied to the case of trapped laser-cooled ions in a segmented ion-trap. We then delve into solving inverse problems, when optimizing trapping potentials for ions. Our presentation is complemented by a quantum mechanical treatment of…
Photoplethysmographic sensor with smoothed output signals
1999
A reflectance-type photoplethysmographic sensor probe connected to personal computer has been constructed and tested. Special algorithms and PC programs providing fast processing and smoothing of the output signals were developed. High-quality single period photoplethysmography signals were recorded from various locations of the body (fingers, forearm, neck). Clear differences in the shapes of detected single-period signals have been observed for different persons, and also for the same person at various measurement locations and before/after physical exercise.
Software tools for using a personal computer as a timer device to assess human kinematic performance: a case study.
1995
Frequently, the assessment of the physical condition of a sportsman depends on the evaluation of different tests, based on biomechanical performance. The data acquisition in these tests is usually hand made, because its automatization is difficult. But when movements are constrained by means of their specific nature, simple tools can be used to achieve that data acquisition. In this paper, a simple and inexpensive system is described to make use of the timing capabilities of a personal computer (PC) to use it as a timer, with applications in biomechanics and sport training. The data acquisition method is based on a PC that, using a specific programming dealing with event timing, gets signal…
A time domain strategy for the measurement of IEEE Standard 1459-2000 power quantities in nonsinusoidal three-phase and single-phase systems
2008
This paper describes a time domain technique for the detection of fundamental and harmonic components of voltages and currents, which is able to evaluate all the quantities required by IEEE standard 1459-2000. The technique does not require any spectral analysis to separate the fundamental positive-sequence components from harmonic, negative-sequence and zero-sequence ones. In the paper the development of the proposed technique is presented for three-phase systems, both three-wires and four-wires, as well as for single-phase systems. The implementation of the proposed technique on a PC-based instrument is also described and experimental results are presented. Finally, accuracy specification…
Theoretical and Experimental Comparison of Total Harmonic Distortion Factors for the Evaluation of Harmonic and Interharmonic Pollution of Grid-Conne…
2006
Grid connected photovoltaic systems are increasingly used in electrical distribution systems. However, they inject distorted currents. Therefore special attention must be paid to harmonic and interharmonic measurements. The new edition of IEC 61000-4-7 introduces the concept of harmonic and interharmonic groups, which implies new expressions for Total Harmonic Distortion factors. In the paper a theoretical and experimental comparison is made between the different total harmonic distortion factors in order to show which of the currently defined distortion factors is best-suited to detect harmonic and interharmonic pollution. Experimental tests were carried out first by means of a calibrator …
Hybrid segmentation and virtual bronchoscopy based on CT images1
2004
Rationale and objectives Introduction of combination of the segmentation tool SegoMeTex and the virtual endoscopy system VIVENDI to perform virtual endoscopic inspections of the human lung. This virtual bronchoscopy system enables visualization of the tracheobronchial tree down to seventh generation. Furthermore, the modified virtual system visualizes hidden structures such as segmented vascular system or tumors. Materials and methods The segmentation is based on image data acquired by a multislice computed tomography scanner. SegoMeTex is used to segment the tracheobronchial tree by a hybrid system with minimal user action. Similarly, the complementary pulmonary arterial can be segmented, …
