Meditation practice is associated with a values-oriented life: the mediating role of decentering and mindfulness

2017

Clarification of personal values and meditation practice has been associated in most meditation traditions and in academic texts. Both values-related behavior and meditation practice increases well-being, but their relationship has not been well studied. It has been suggested that values, together with self-regulation, psychological flexibility, and exposure, are key mechanisms of action in mindfulness. The aims of this study were to explore the association between meditation and values and to examine the processes involved in this relation. A sample of 235 meditation-na < ve participants and 274 subjects with varying levels of experience in meditation practice completed an online assessmen…

Fostering Self-Compassion and Loving-Kindness in Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder: A Randomized Pilot Study.

2017

The aim of this randomized pilot study is to investigate the effects of a short training programme in loving-kindness and compassion meditation (LKM/CM) in patients with borderline personality disorder. Patients were allocated to LKM/CM or mindfulness continuation training (control group). Patients in the LKM/CM group showed greater changes in Acceptance compared with the control group. Remarkable changes in borderline symptomatology, self-criticism and self-kindness were also observed in the LKM/CM group. Mechanistic explanations and therapeutic implications of the findings are discussed. Highlights: Three weeks of loving-kindness and compassion meditations increased acceptance of the pres…

Exploring relations among mindfulness facets and various meditation practices: Do they work in different ways?

2017

Several meditation practices are associated with mindfulness-based interventions but little is known about their specific effects on the development of different mindfulness facets. This study aimed to assess the relations among different practice variables, types of meditation, and mindfulness facets. The final sample was composed of 185 participants who completed an on-line survey, including information on the frequency and duration of each meditation practice, lifetime practice, and the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. A Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes structural model was specified, estimated, and tested. Results showed that the Model's overall fit was adequate: chi(2) (1045) =…

An adaptive display for the treatment of diverse trauma PTSD victims.

2009

2022

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe emotional impact on those who have suffered from the disease, but also on their families. Secure attachment and social support can cushion or prevent these negative effects. The aim of the present study was to assess risk and protective factors in relatives of people affected by COVID-19. Method: After signing informed consent, we assessed participants (n=50) on psychopathology (SCL-90-R), attachment (CAA) and social support (MOS-SSS). Results: Family members who participated presented with emotional distress, insecure attachment bonds and moderate social support. Males and people with previous mental or physical health problems were more a…

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Valencia Scale on Attitudes and Beliefs Toward Hypnosis: an international study.

2004

Health professionals" beliefs and attitudes toward hypnosis may make them reluctant to use it or even to foster misapplications and iatrogenic uses of hypnosis. The Valencia Scale on Attitudes and Beliefs toward Hypnosis-Therapist version (VSABH-T) is a specific instrument to evaluate therapists" attitudes and beliefs. The aims of this study are to evaluate the 8-factor structure of the VSABH-T proposed from a confirmatory perspective. The sample comprised 1,661 licensed psychologists who are members of the Spanish Psychological Association for the initial test and 787 for the retest. Results confirmed the 8-factor structure obtained in a previous exploratory study, namely: Fear, Memory, He…

Energy and Personality: A Bridge between Physics and Psychology

2021

[EN] The objective of this paper is to present a mathematical formalism that states a bridge between physics and psychology, concretely between analytical dynamics and personality theory, in order to open new insights in this theory. In this formalism, energy plays a central role. First, the short-term personality dynamics can be measured by the General Factor of Personality (GFP) response to an arbitrary stimulus. This GFP dynamical response is modeled by a stimulus¿response model: an integro-differential equation. The bridge between physics and psychology appears when the stimulus¿response model can be formulated as a linear second order differential equation and, subsequently, reformulat…

El origen de los trastornos mentales: un nuevo enfoque desde el estudio de la dinámica de la personalidad

2018

[EN] There is a growing consensus in the mental health sciences (psychology, psychiatry) that there is no clear dividing line between "normal" personality and "abnormal" personality or mental disorders. In fact, basic personality traits predispose or overlap with clinical mental disorders. For example, Neuroticism, as a factor that predisposes to neurosis, predisposes to suffer from anxiety, depression and obsessive disorders. This question serves to present a summary of the work of our group (Antonio Caselles, Joan C. Micó and Salvador Amigó) and to point out future research. Thus, after reviewing our studies on the dynamics of the General Personality Factor (FGP) and its biological substr…

Learning to be a psychostimulants addict with self-regulation therapy

2018

This article presents the results of a single-case experiment of alternative treatments in which a participant applied the Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT) to reproduce the effects of a stimulant drug, methylphenidate, and a sedative, alcohol. The SRT is a learning procedure based on classic conditioning and suggestion that reproduces the effect of drugs by remembering the effects they have. The participant reproduced the effects of both drugs during ten sessions held on 5 consecutive days. To record effects, adjective scales were used that measured Drug effect, High, Rush, Energy, Tension and the General Factor of Personality (GFP). The results indicated that the participant was capable of in…

Resilience as predictor de calidad de vida en participantes s borderline personalidad disorder before and after treatment

2021

Studies have suggested that psychotherapy improves the Quality of Life (QoL) of participants with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). However, there are no studies on the differential efficacy of treatments on the QoL of participants with BPD. Moreover, the relationship between QoL and resilience has rarely been studied in participants with BPD. Objectives: a) to examine whether people with BPD have worse QoL than the non-clinical population; b) to examine whether there are statistically significant differences between Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS), or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-Treatment at Usual (CBT…
