Distributed and mobile systems based on wireless networks: definition of a generic control architecture

2005

The tendency toward the use of distributed systems is due to these systems have demonstrated to be a good option for the industrial control systems implementation, because of their flexibility and power, which can be increased with the application of artificial intelligence techniques. In this line, our research group has developed several distributed systems applied to chemical analysis and industrial automation. For these implementations the CAN network was used. Nowadays there is a market for technical tasks like distributed control, monitoring or data acquisition where there is a need for wireless connectivity. Thus, in this paper we want to discuss possibilities and necessary developme…

Advanced Stochastic Petri Net Modeling with the Mercury Scripting Language

2017

Formal models are widely used in performance and dependability studies of computational systems. Graphical modeling tools allow users to compose such models with ease, but they complicate the creation of models with a dynamic/complex structure, the hierarchical arrangement of different models, and the automatic execution of models with different parameter configurations. To overcome this problem, we created a scripting language for the Mercury tool that supports the combination of different modeling approaches (e.g., Stochastic Petri Nets and Reliability Block Diagrams) in a single project. In this paper, we focus on the extensions developed to improve the capabilities of Generalized Stocha…

Modellierung überbetrieblicher behandlungsprozesse durch objekt-petrinetze

2005

Clinical processes are often performed by the cooperation of different healthcare organization. But even that for modeling of such processes the object Petri nets can be used, they often lack of intuitive comprehensibility. This contribution presents an interpretation of object Petri nets which assigns abstract net elements to real objects of the healthcare domain. By doing this it helps domain user to apply this Petri net type to the modeling of clinical processes. The application of this approach is demonstrated.

A task scheduling algorithm for HPC applications using colored stochastic Petri Net models

2017

The increase in demand for High Performance Computing (HPC) scientific applications motivates the efforts to reduce costs of running these applications. The problem to solve is that of dynamical multi-criterial optimal scheduling of an application on a HPC platform with a high number of heterogeneous nodes. The solution proposed by the authors is a HPC hardware-software architecture that includes the infrastructure for two level (node and inter-node level) adaptive load balancing. The article presents the development of an Coloured Petri Net(CPN) for such an architecture. The model was used for the development of a dynamic distributed algorithm for the scheduling problem. The CPN allowed a …

Categorical Modeling Method, Proof of Concept for the Petri Net Language

2019

Modeling increases the importance of processes significantly, but also imposes higher requirements for the accuracy of process specifications, since an error in the design of a process may only be discovered after it already produces large cumulative losses. We believe that modeling tools can help build better models in a shorter time. This inevitably results in the need to build formal models that can be theoretically verified. A category as well as a model is a mixture of graphical information and algebraic operations. Therefore, category language seems to be the most general to describe the models. The category theory offers an integrated vision of the concepts of a model, and also provi…

Neural Petri Control: an application on a mobile robot

2006

In the present work, an innovative nonlinear controller of nonholonomic mechanical systems, characterized by a dynamic not well known model a priori, using a new neural model obtained by the combination of a Petri net with a neural network, is proposed. The performances of the control algorithm are evaluated for tasks of tracking of time trajectories. The study of the stability of the total system to closed loop is based on the Lyapunov theory. Simulation experiments, made taking into consideration a nonholonomic mobile robot, to two wheels, allowed to verify the theoretical results.

Petri Net Modelling of the Starch Enzymatic Liquefaction

2012

This paper investigates the use of the Petri Net modelling language for the description and analysis of the enzymatic reactions that are used for the starch liquefaction. The Coloured Petri Net formalism supported by the CPN Tools modelling and simulation environment is used. The pools of substrates and products are represented as the places and the possible reactions as the transition of the net. The concurrent reactions are modelled trough transitions that are enabled at the same time. The occurrence probabilities associated with each of these concurrent transitions are chosen as the model parameters. The analysis of the specific properties of the model is used to fit the model to data fr…

Towards Modelling Information Security with Key-Challenge Petri Nets

2009

Our global information society is based on distributed wide-area networks. Network security consists of the provisions made in an underlying computer network infrastructure, policies adopted by the network administrator to protect the network-accessible resources from unauthorized access, as well as continuous monitoring and measurement of the network security's effectiveness. In this paper, we describe the use of Petri nets in modelling network security. We propose a new hierarchical method for modelling network attacks and evaluating effectiveness of the corresponding defences. Our model is called Key-Challenge Petri Net (KCPN).

Comparing the Control-Flow of EPC and Petri Net from the End-User Perspective

2005

This contribution describes the results of a laboratory experiment which compares the Event-driven Process Chain (EPC) and Petri net (C/E net) regarding their approaches to represent the control-flow of processes. The outcome of the experiment indicates that from end-user perspective the EPC approach of applying connectors is superior to the token game. However, the non-local semantic of the EPC OR-connector clearly had a negative impact on end-user comprehension. The experiment also illustrates that the perceived ease-of-use and the intention to use the EPC notation is higher than C/E net.

Algorithmic Analysis of Programs with Well Quasi-ordered Domains

2000

AbstractOver the past few years increasing research effort has been directed towards the automatic verification of infinite-state systems. This paper is concerned with identifying general mathematical structures which can serve as sufficient conditions for achieving decidability. We present decidability results for a class of systems (called well-structured systems) which consist of a finite control part operating on an infinite data domain. The results assume that the data domain is equipped with a preorder which is a well quasi-ordering, such that the transition relation is “monotonic” (a simulation) with respect to the preorder. We show that the following properties are decidable for wel…
