Abstract In this study, we tested and compared the endocrine disruption activities of compounds in materials used to package foods (bisphenol A, bisphenol F, and bisphenol A diglycidylether BADGE) with natural molecules (genistein, apigenin, kaempferol, and tangeretin) in the human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 (ER + ) and MDA-MB453 (AR + ; GR + ). Octylphenol was also chosen as a xenoestrogen reference. Two compounds had no estrogenic activity: BADGE and tangeretin. Genistein was the most active compound in the E-Screen assay with MCF-7, followed by octylphenol, bisphenol F, bisphenol A and apigenin, with kaempferol the least potent. SUMMARY Sinusoidal endothelial cells and Kupffer cells are the first cell populations in the liver that come into contact with gut-derived endotoxin in portal blood. Although endotoxin concentrations as high as 1 ng/ml are physiologically present in portal blood, no local inflammation is seen. We show that the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6, which is central to the development of inflammatory reactions in the liver, is produced by sinusoidal endothelial cells and Kupffer cells in response to low concentrations of endotoxin (100 pg/ml to 1 ng/ml). Endothelin is the most potent vasoconstrictor peptide known today. Using a radioimmunoassay for endothelin, we measured immunoreactive endothelin in culture media of guinea pig sinusoidal endothelial liver cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells. A time-dependent release of immunoreactive endothelin by confluent sinusoidal endothelial liver cells in culture was found. Sinusoidal endothelial liver cells produced similar amounts of immunoreactive endothelin as umbilical vein endothelial cells, about 900 pg/microgram DNA per 24 h. Introduction Although the use of sports compression socks is becoming more popular, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the helpfulness of these garments for physical movement or sports use. One of the main effects attributed to the use of compression sock is the facilitation of venous blood flow return which is thought to improve performance and recovery. Methodology In this study, 10 trained runners performed 2 treadmill running tests for 30 min to 75% of their maximum aerobic speed, without sports socks (control) and with different sports compression socks. Abstract Dexamethasone (DXM) is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory properties. We assessed the feasibility of an epidemiological study on the risk of radiation-related lens opacities among interventional physicians in Germany. In a regional multi-centre pilot study associated with a European project, we tested the recruitment strategy, a European questionnaire on work history for the latter dosimetry calculation and the endpoint assessment. 263 interventional physicians and 129 non-exposed colleagues were invited.
