Preoperative simulation of postoperative iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens position and simulation of aging using high-resolution Scheimpflug imag…

2006

To increase postoperative safety after implantation of iris-fixated phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs), optimal preoperative evaluation and patient selection is mandatory. We present a new software tool in a high-resolution Scheimpflug imaging device that precisely simulates the postoperative position of an iris-fixated pIOL and also simulates the effect of aging on the pIOL's position.

The effect of age on cognitive performance of frontal patients

2015

Age is known to affect prefrontal brain structure and executive functioning in healthy older adults, patients with neurodegenerative conditions and TBI. Yet, no studies appear to have systematically investigated the effect of age on cognitive performance in patients with focal lesions. We investigated the effect of age on the cognitive performance of a large sample of tumour and stroke patients with focal unilateral, frontal (n=68), or non-frontal lesions (n=45) and healthy controls (n=52). We retrospectively reviewed their cross sectional cognitive and imaging data. In our frontal patients, age significantly predicted the magnitude of their impairment on two executive tests (Raven's Advanc…

Distribution of Anterior Chamber Angle Width and Correlation With Age, Refraction, and Anterior Chamber Depth—The Gutenberg Health Study

2016

PURPOSE Scheimpflug imaging allows quantitative analysis of the width of the anterior chamber angle. We report the population-based distribution of the anterior chamber angle width using this noncontact imaging technique and investigate associated factors. METHODS A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out in Germany. A comprehensive ophthalmologic examination including refraction, biometry, and Scheimpflug imaging was performed. Automated measurement of the anterior chamber angle was performed in each anterior chamber quadrant. Exclusion criteria were previous ocular surgery or inadequate image quality. Association analyses were carried out to determine independently associat…

Intrasubject repeatability of corneal power, thickness, and wavefront aberrations with a new version of a dual rotating Scheimpflug–Placido system

2014

Purpose To determine the intrasubject repeatability of a recently introduced dual-camera rotating Scheimpflug–Placido imaging system (Galilei G4) in determining corneal thickness, power, and wavefront aberrations in young healthy subjects. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Prospective evaluation of diagnostic technology. Methods The study comprised right eyes of 25 subjects aged 20 to 40 years with a spherical equivalent ranging from −4.25 to +1.00 diopters. The central corneal thickness, thinnest point value and location, anterior and posterior surface curvatures, total corneal power, and corneal wavefront aberrations were measured for distance vision using the dual S…

The what and how of observational learning

2007

Abstract Neuroimaging evidence increasingly supports the hypothesis that the same neural structures subserve the execution, imagination, and observation of actions. We used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to investigate the specific roles of cerebellum and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in observational learning of a visuomotor task. Subjects observed an actor detecting a hidden sequence in a matrix and then performed the task detecting either the previously observed sequence or a new one. rTMS applied over the cerebellum before the observational training interfered with performance of the new sequence, whereas rTMS applied over the DLPFC interfered with performa…

Assessment of modifications in thickness, curvatures, and volume upon the cornea caused by disposable soft contact lens wear.

2015

Purpose To assess the effect of different disposable soft contact lenses on several corneal parameters–-thickness, anterior and posterior curvature, and volume–-by means of a Scheimpflug imaging-based device (Pentacam HR). Diurnal variations of these parameters were taken into account. Methods Twenty-one young, healthy subjects wore 4 different types of daily disposable soft contact lenses on 4 different days: Dailies AquaComfort Plus, SofLens, Dailies Total1, and Acuvue TruEye. The lenses had different material and water content. Pachymetry and curvature maps and corneal volume values were obtained using the Pentacam HR twice a day: one before putting the lens on and one after an 8-hour pe…

Social exclusion influences conditioned fear acquisition and generalization: A mediating effect from the medial prefrontal cortex

2020

Abstract Fear acquisition and generalization play key roles in promoting the survival of mammals and contribute to anxiety disorders. While previous research has provided much evidence for the repercussions of social exclusion on mental health, how social exclusion affects fear acquisition and generalization has received scant attention. In our study, participants were divided into two groups according to two Cyberball paradigm conditions (exclusion/inclusion). Both groups underwent a Pavlovian conditioning paradigm, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and skin conductance response (SCR) assessments. We aimed to determine the effects of social exclusion on fear acquisition and ge…

Impairments in proverb interpretation following focal frontal lobe lesions.

2012

The proverb interpretation task (PIT) is often used in clinical settings to evaluate frontal “executive” dysfunction. However, only a relatively small number of studies have investigated the relationship between frontal lobe lesions and performance on the PIT. We compared 52 patients with unselected focal frontal lobe lesions with 52 closely matched healthy controls on a proverb interpretation task. Participants also completed a battery of neuropsychological tests, including a fluid intelligence task (Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices). Lesions were firstly analysed according to a standard left/right sub-division. Secondly, a finer-grained analysis compared the performance of patients w…

First-trimester maternal concentrations of polyfluoroalkyl substances and fetal growth throughout pregnancy

2019

Background: Several studies have investigated the possible association between prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and birth anthropometry. However, none has assessed fetal size longitudinally. We studied the possible association between PFASs and fetal biometry. Methods: In 1230 mother-child pairs of three cohorts from the Spanish INMA-Project, we analyzed perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) in first-trimester maternal plasma (collection: 2003-2008). We measured abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL), biparietal diameter (BPD), and estimated fetal weight (EFW)…

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during capsaicin-induced pain: modulatory effects o…

2009

Evidence by functional imaging studies suggests the role of left DLPFC in the inhibitory control of nociceptive transmission system. Pain exerts an inhibitory modulation on motor cortex, reducing MEP amplitude, while the effect of pain on motor intracortical excitability has not been studied so far. In the present study, we explored in healthy subjects the effect of capsaicin-induced pain and the modulatory influences of left DLPFC stimulation on motor corticospinal and intracortical excitability. Capsaicin was applied on the dorsal surface of the right hand, and measures of motor corticospinal excitability (test-MEP) and short intracortical inhibition (SICI) and facilitation (ICF) were obt…
