Nel De beneficiis (I 4.3-4; III 21-22; V. 1-5), Seneca si serve del motivo della contentio per rappresentare il meccanismo virtuoso che suggerisce di impiegare nella prassi dei benefici, in cui la sconfitta non è mai considerata vergognosa. The paper aims to offer an interpretation of Senecan Phaedra 821-823. In them, the wish to grow old addressed to Hippolytus should be interpreted on the one hand through the poetic tradition (Augustean in particular), on the other as a warning that the chorus directs to the prince no less guilty than Phaedra.

In f. 472 of Seneca's Phaedra (uacuum sine ullis classibus stabit mare) a brilliant conjecture of Richard Bentley, who proposed to read piscibus in place of classibus, has been adopted by the majority of later editions. By an analysis of both the discourses of the nurse and of Hippolytus, the paper attempts to prove the authenticity of the manuscript tradition
