Structural phase transitions on the nanoscale: The crucial pattern in the phase-change materialsGe2Sb2Te5and GeTe

2007

Phase-change materials are of immense importance for optical recording and computer memory, but the structure of the amorphous phases and the nature of the phase transition in the nanoscale bits pose continuing challenges. Massively parallel density functional simulations have been used to characterize the amorphous structure of the prototype materials ${\mathrm{Ge}}_{2}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{5}$ and GeTe. In both, there is long-ranged order among Te atoms and the crucial structural motif is a four-membered ring with alternating atoms of types $A$ (Ge and Sb) and $B$ (Te), an ``$ABAB$ square.'' The rapid amorphous-to-crystalline phase change is a reorientation of disordered $ABAB$ …

Polymeric monolayers and liposomes as models for biomembranes

1985

Polymer chemists as poachers in foreign grounds? Why not? Macromolecular chemistry has become a mature science with all advantages and handicaps of a well-established scientific discipline: many heights are conquerred and the harvest is abundant, but adventures and the future might be elsewhere. Besides, in these times of bottomed out industrial profits in common plastics, future polymer chemistry cannot be limited to repetitive improvement of already successful mass polymers but should rather expand into neighboring fields of material science as well as life science where “polymer thinking” might help to overcome difficulties. — First hesitant steps on the bridge towards membrane biology h…

True Nanoferroics with the Properties Absent in Corresponding Bulk Samples

2013

The Chapter covers the theoretical and experimental approaches to the investigations of the physical properties, which are inherent in ferroics of nanosize and absent in corresponding bulk materials. Namely, the strong surface influence along with other effects of geometrical confinement generates number of physical effects, which do not occur in bulk ferroics samples. One example of such phenomena is room-temperature ferromagnetism in nanoparticles and thin films of undoped CeO2, HfO2, SnO2, Al2O3 and other nonmagnetic (in bulk samples) oxides. Theo other striking example is appearance of so-called spontaneous flexoeffects (i.e. flexoelectric, flexomagnetic, flexoelastic) in ferroic nanosa…

High-Pressure Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction of Lead Chromate: Structural Determination and Reinterpretation of Electronic and Vibrational Properti…

2019

We have investigated the high-pressure behavior of PbCrO4. In particular, we have probed the existence of structural transitions under high pressure (at 4.5 GPa) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations. The structural sequence of PbCrO4 is different than previously determined. Specifically, we have established that PbCrO4, under pressure, displays a monoclinic-tetragonal phase transition, with no intermediate phases between the low-pressure monoclinic monazite structure (space group P21/ n) and the high-pressure tetragonal structure. The crystal structure of the high-pressure polymorph is, for the first time, undoubtedly determined to a tetragonal sche…

Tetradihydrobenzoquinonate and Tetrachloranilate Zr(IV) Complexes: Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Phase Transition and Open-Framework Behavior for …

2013

The molecular complexes K4[Zr(DBQ)4] and K 4[Zr(CA)4], where DBQ2- and CA2- stand respectively for deprotonated dihydroxybenzoquinone and chloranilic acid, are reported. The anionic metal complexes consist of Zr(IV) surrounded by four O,O-chelating ligands. Besides the preparation and crystal structures for the two complexes, we show that in the solid state the DBQ complex forms a 3-D open framework (with 22% accessible volume) that undergoes a crystal-to-crystal phase transition to a compact structure upon guest molecule release. This process is reversible. In the presence of H2O, CO2, and other small molecules, the framework opens and accommodates guest molecules. CO2 adsorption isotherms…

One-Dimensional Iron(II) Compounds Exhibiting Spin Crossover and Liquid Crystalline Properties in the Room Temperature Region

2008

A novel series of 1D Fe(II) metallomesogens have been synthesized using the ligand 5-bis(alkoxy)- N-(4 H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzamide (C n -tba) and the Fe(X) 2. sH 2O salts. The polymers obey the general formula [Fe(C n -tba) 3](X) 2. sH 2O [X = CF 3SO 3 (-), BF 4 (-); n = 4, 6, 8, 10, 12]. The derivatives with n = 4, 6 exhibit spin transition behavior like in crystalline compounds, whereas those with n = 8, 10, 12 present a spin transition coexisting with the mesomorphic behavior in the room-temperature region. A columnar mesophase has been found for the majority of the metallomesogens, but also a columnar lamellar mesophase was observed for other derivatives. [Fe(C 12-tba) 3](CF 3SO 3) 2…

Imparting hysteretic behavior to spin transition in neutral mononuclear complexes

2016

A series of spin transition neutral compounds [FeL(NCS)2] has been synthesized and characterized by means of magnetic susceptibility studies, X-ray diffraction, IR and Mossbauer spectroscopic, and calorimetric measurements (L = N,N-bis((3-alkoxypyridin-2-yl)methylene)-propane-1,3-diamine, number of carbon atoms in chains (n) = 4, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20). The shortest chain compound is crystalline and displays a gradual spin transition above ambient temperature. Growing the aliphatic substituent up to n = 12 and 14 leads to loss of crystalline order and deterioration of magnetic properties. At the critical chain length n = 16 and above, the compounds undergo a phase transition reflected by a spi…

Hydrolytic action of phospholipase A2 in monolayers in the phase transition region: direct observation of enzyme domain formation using fluorescence …

1990

Phospholipase A2, a ubiquitous lipolytic enzyme highly active in the hydrolysis of organized phospholipid substrates, has been characterized optically in its action against a variety of phospholipid monolayers using fluorescence microscopy. By labeling the enzyme with a fluorescent marker and introducing it into the subphase of a Langmuir film balance, the hydrolysis of lipid monolayers in their liquid-solid phase transition region could be directly observed with the assistance of an epifluorescence microscope. Visual observation of hydrolysis of different phospholipid monolayers in the phase transition region in real-time could differentiate various mechanisms of hydrolytic action against …

Long-distance spin-transport across the Morin phase transition up to room temperature in ultra-low damping single crystals of the antiferromagnet α-F…

2020

Antiferromagnetic materials can host spin-waves with polarizations ranging from circular to linear depending on their magnetic anisotropies. Until now, only easy-axis anisotropy antiferromagnets with circularly polarized spin-waves were reported to carry spin-information over long distances of micrometers. In this article, we report long-distance spin-transport in the easy-plane canted antiferromagnetic phase of hematite and at room temperature, where the linearly polarized magnons are not intuitively expected to carry spin. We demonstrate that the spin-transport signal decreases continuously through the easy-axis to easy-plane Morin transition, and persists in the easy-plane phase through …

Chemically Fueled Volume Phase Transition of Polyacid Microgels

2021

Abstract Microgels are soft colloids that show responsive behavior and are easy to functionalize for applications. They are considered key components for future smart colloidal material systems. However, so far microgel systems have almost exclusively been studied in classical responsive switching settings using external triggers, while internally organized, autonomous control mechanisms as found in supramolecular chemistry and DNA nanotechnology relying on fuel‐driven out‐of‐equilibrium concepts have not been implemented into microgel systems. Here, we introduce chemically fueled transient volume phase transitions (VPTs) for poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) microgels, where the collapsed hydr…
