High-pressure monoclinic–monoclinic transition in fergusonite-type HoNbO4

2021

Abstract In this paper we perform a high-pressure (HP) study of fergusonite-type HoNbO4. Powder x-ray diffraction experiments and ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) simulations provide evidence of a phase transition at 18.9(1.1) GPa from the monoclinic fergusonite-type structure (space group I2/a) to another monoclinic polymorph described by space group P21/c. The phase transition is reversible and the HP structural behavior is different than the one previously observed in related niobates. The HP phase remains stable up to 29 GPa. The observed transition involves a change in the Nb coordination number from 4 to 6, and it is driven by mechanical instabilities. We have determined the …

Lattice dynamics study of nanocrystalline yttrium gallium garnet at high pressure

2014

This work reports an experimental and theoretical lattice dynamics study of nanocrystalline Y3Ga5O12 (YGG) garnet at high pressures. Raman scattering measurements in nanocrystalline Tm3+-doped YGG garnet performed up to 29 GPa have been compared to lattice dynamics ab initio calculations for bulk garnet carried out up to 89 GPa. Good agreement between the theoretical vibrational modes of bulk crystal and the experimental modes measured in the nanocrystals is found. The contribution of GaO4 tetrahedra and GaO6 octahedra to the different phonon modes of YGG is discussed on the basis of the calculated total and partial phonon density of states. Symmetries, frequencies, and pressure coefficient…

Pressure-induced phase transition in hydrothermally grown ZnO nanoflowers investigated by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

2015

This paper reports the pressure-dependent photoluminescence and Raman spectral investigation of hydrothermally synthesized ZnO nanoflowers at room temperature. Intrinsic near-band-edge UV emission from ZnO nanoflowers is monotonously blue-shifted under pressures up to 13.8 GPa with a pressure coefficient of 26 meV GPa(-1), and this pressure value is nearly 5 GPa above the transition pressure from the wurtzite to the rock salt phase for bulk ZnO. The Raman band corresponds to the wurtzite phase, the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] modes were observed up to about 11 GPa from the spectra. The apparent discrepancy in the transition pressures as determined from photoluminescence and …

Inhibition of light emission from the metastable tetragonal phase at low temperatures in island-like films of lead iodide perovskites

2019

Photonic applications based on halide perovskites, namely CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3), have recently attracted remarkable attention due to the high efficiencies reported for photovoltaic and light emitting devices. Despite these outstanding results, there are many temperature-, laser excitation power-, and morphology-dependent phenomena that require further research to be completely understood. In this work, we have investigated in detail the nature of exciton optical transitions and recombination dynamics below and above the orthorhombic/tetragonal ('O'-/'T'-) temperature phase transition (∼150 K) depending on the material continuity (continuous-like) or discontinuity (island-like) in MAPbI3 films…

X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy of thermochromic phase transition in CuMoO4

2018

Thermochromic phase transition was studied in CuMoO4 using the Cu and Mo K-edge x-ray absorption spec-troscopy in the temperature range of 10-300 K. The hysteretic behavior has been evidenced from the tempera-ture dependence of the pre-edge shoulder intensity at the Mo K-edge, indicating that the transition from brown-ish-red γ-CuMoO4 to green α-CuMoO4 occurs in the temperature range of 230-280 K upon heating, whereas the α-to-γ transition occurs between 200 and 120 K upon cooling. Such behavior of the pre-edge shoulder at the Mo K-edge correlates with the change of molybdenum coordination between distorted tetrahedral in α-CuMoO4 and distorted octahedral in γ-CuMoO4. This result has been s…

Polar nanodomains and local ferroelectric phenomena in relaxor lead lanthanum zirconate titanate ceramics

2005

Transparent Pb0.9125La0.0975(Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.976O3 ceramics (conventionally abbreviated as PLZT 9.75/65/35) is a typical relaxor characterized by the absence of the ferroelectric order at the macroscopic scale. In this letter, we report on the observation of complex polar structures on the surface of this material via piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The irregular polarization patterns are associated with the formation of a glassy state, where random electric fields destroy the long-range ferroelectric order. The measure of the disorder, the correlation length of ∼50nm, was directly deduced from the PFM images. Local poling of relaxor ceramics resulted in the formation of a stable micro…

High-pressure behavior ofCaMoO4

2017

We report a high-pressure study of tetragonal scheelite-type $\mathrm{CaMo}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ up to 29 GPa. In order to characterize its high-pressure behavior, we have combined Raman and optical-absorption measurements with density functional theory calculations. We have found evidence of a pressure-induced phase transition near 15 GPa. Experiments and calculations agree in assigning the high-pressure phase to a monoclinic fergusonite-type structure. The reported results are consistent with previous powder x-ray-diffraction experiments, but are in contradiction with the conclusions obtained from earlier Raman measurements, which support the existence of more than one phase transition in the…

Unprecedented pressure-driven metallization and topological charge transport in an anion radical salt

2021

Abstract The hybrid inorganic/organic closed π -stacking and soft lattice of a copper anion radial (Copper-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) renders its electrical conductivity and structural modifications, which are susceptible to temperature and pressure. The geometry of its metal-ligand construction contemplates the concept of topology with a charge-transfer instability. A pressure-induced ionic-neutral phase transition occurs and accompanies an anomalously large electrical conductivity, carries topological charges, and possesses a low energy gap smaller than the Coulomb gap. X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the metal establishes the high electrical conduction by the topological charges.…

Study of charge density waves in suspended 2H-TaS 2 and 2H-TaSe 2 by nanomechanical resonance

2021

The charge density wave (CDW) state in van der Waals systems shows interesting scaling phenomena as the number of layers can significantly affect the CDW transition temperature, $T_{CDW}$. However, it is often difficult to use conventional methods to study the phase transition in these systems due to their small size and sensitivity to degradation. Degradation is an important parameter which has been shown to greatly influence the superconductivity in layered systems. Since the CDW state competes with the onset of superconductivity, it is expected that $T_{CDW}$ will also be affected by the degradation. Here, we probe the CDW phase transition by the mechanical resonances of suspended 2H-TaS…
