Second sound near lambda transition in presence of quantum vortices

2018

In this paper, temperature waves (also known as second sound) are consid- ered, with their respective coupling with waves in the order parameter describing the transition from normal phase to superfluid phase, and with waves in the vortex length density. We analyze the coupling between these three kinds of waves and explore its relevance in situations not far from the lambda transition. In particular, the expres- sions for the second sound speed and second sound attenuation are explicitly obtained within some approximations, showing the influence of the order parameter and the vortex length density, which is decisive close to the transition.

Phase Transitions in Classical Fluids and Fluids with Internal Quantum States in Two Dimensions: Computer Simulations and Theory

1993

1)We investigate the properties of a model fluid whose molecules have classical degrees of freedom in two dimensions and two internal quantum states. The attractive interactions are “turned on” when the internal states are hybridized, corresponding to the molecules acquiring a “dipole” moment. The phase diagram of this system in the temperature- density plane is investigated by a combination of path integral Monte Carlo and block size analysis techniques. The results are compared with mean- field—theory predictions. 2) We present molecular dynamics simulation results of quenches into the unstable region of a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones system. The evolution of the system from the non-equi…

Ising systems with pairwise competing surface fields

2005

The magnetization distribution and phase behaviour of large but finite Ising simple cubic L × L × L lattices in d = 3 dimensions and square L × L lattices in d = 2 dimensions are studied for the case where four free boundaries are present, at which surface fields +Hs act on one pair of opposite boundaries while surface fields −Hs act on the other pair (in d = 3, periodic boundary conditions are used for the remaining pair). Both the distribution PL(m) of the global magnetization and also the distribution of the local magnetization m(x,z) are obtained by Monte Carlo simulations, where x and z denote the coordinates when the boundaries are oriented along the x-axis and z-axis (in d = 2); or a…

Phase transitions in nanosystems caused by interface motion: the Ising bipyramid with competing surface fields.

2005

The phase behavior of a large but finite Ising ferromagnet in the presence of competing surface magnetic fields +/- H_s is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and by phenomenological theory. Specifically, the geometry of a double pyramid of height 2L is considered, such that the surface field is positive on the four upper triangular surfaces of the bi-pyramid and negative on the lower ones. It is shown that the total spontaneous magnetization vanishes (for L -> infinity) at the temperature T_f(H), related to the "filling transition" of a semi-infinite pyramid, which can be well below the critical temperature of the bulk. The discontinuous vanishing of the magnetization is accompanied by a…

Electrophoretic mobility of charged spheres

2008

The electrophoretic mobility μ of charged 0.3 µm Polystyrene spheres suspended in water was measured over a wide range of salt concentrations c and packing fractions Φ. To observe isolated spheres at packing fractions Φ ≤ 2 × 10−7 a newly developed optical tweezing electrophoresis (OTE) apparatus was used. At deionised conditions μ=2.5 × 10−8 m2V−1s−1, it decreases further upon increasing the salt concentration c. Measurements at larger Φ generally show much larger μ and a qualitatively different dependence on c. At no added salt μ increases in the unordered state but a saturation at μ=6.8 × 10−8 m2V−1s−1 is observed, as the system develops fluid order. The fluid-crystal phase transition is…

Simulating a quantum commensurate-incommensurate phase transition using two Raman-coupled one-dimensional condensates

2020

We study a transition between a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous phase in a system of one-dimensional, Raman tunnel-coupled Bose gases. The homogeneous phase shows a flat density and phase profile, whereas the inhomogeneous ground state is characterized by periodic density ripples, and a soliton staircase in the phase difference. We show that under experimentally viable conditions the transition can be tuned by the wavevector difference $Q$ of the Raman beams and can be described by the Pokrovsky-Talapov model for the relative phase between the two condensates. Local imaging available in atom chip experiments allows to observe the soliton lattice directly, while modulation spectroscopy can …

Localization-delocalization transition for disordered cubic harmonic lattices.

2012

We study numerically the disorder-induced localization-delocalization phase transitions that occur for mass and spring constant disorder in a three-dimensional cubic lattice with harmonic couplings. We show that, while the phase diagrams exhibit regions of stable and unstable waves, the universality of the transitions is the same for mass and spring constant disorder throughout all the phase boundaries. The combined value for the critical exponent of the localization lengths of $\nu = 1.550^{+0.020}_{-0.017}$ confirms the agreement with the universality class of the standard electronic Anderson model of localization. We further support our investigation with studies of the density of states…

A mode coupling analysis of the central peak at order disorder phase transitions

1993

The influence of local and translation invariant memory effects on the critical dynamics of a model undergoing a continous structural phase transition from a disordered (T>Tc) to an ordered distorted phase (T>Tc) is studied by mode coupling theory above the critical temperatureTc. It is shown that besides the existence of critical slowing-down modes there also exists a central peak as a consequence of correlations of the critical modes, increasing with the critical exponent γ when approachingTc. The dependence of the central peak on the wavevector\(\vec q\), temperatureT and on the spatial dimensiond is investigated. Ford=3 a scenario withlocal long time memory correlations is compared with…

Monte Carlo simulations of the 2d-Ising model in the geometry of a long stripe

2011

Abstract The two-dimensional Ising model in the geometry of a long stripe can be regarded as a model system for the study of nanopores. As a quasi-one-dimensional system, it also exhibits a rather interesting “phase behavior”: At low temperatures the stripe is either filled with “liquid” or “gas” and “densities” are similar to those in the bulk. When we approach a “pseudo-critical point” (below the critical point of the bulk) at which the correlation length becomes comparable to the length of the stripe, several interfaces emerge and the systems contains multiple “liquid” and “gas” domains. The transition depends on the size of the stripe and occurs at lower temperatures for larger stripes.…
