The Foundations of Projective Geometry in Italy from De Paolis to Pieri

2002

In this paper we examine the contributions of the Italian geometrical school to the Foundations of Projective Geometry. Starting from De Paolis' work we discuss some papers by Segre, Peano, Veronese, Fano and Pieri. In particular we try to show how a totally abstract and general point of view was clearly adopted by the Italian scholars many years before the publication of Hilbert's Grundlagen. We are particularly interested in the interrelations between the Italian and the German schools (mainly the influence of Staudt's and Klein's works). We try also to understand the reason of the steady decline of the Italian school during the twentieth century.

2014

The notion of prejudice occupies a not very visible place in the Kantian works. In fact it has been seldom treated in Kantian studies in German, English, French, Italian or Spanish. But it connects with relevant key notes of the Critique of Pure Reason (1781, 1787) as well as from the Critique of Practical Reason (1788) and the Critique of Judgement (1790). The aim of this paper consists in the analysis of the Kantian notion of prejudice, its systematic place and its sources (among these particularly the works of Georg Friedrich Meier and the thought of Christian Thomasius).

Max von laue’s role in the relativity revolution

2008

Whereas countless studies have been devoted to Einstein’s work on relativity, the contributions of several other major protagonists have received comparatively little attention. Within the immediate German context, no single figure played a more important role in developing the consequences of the special theory of relativity (SR) than Max von Laue (1879–1960). Although remembered today mainly for his discovery of x-ray diffraction in 1912 – an achievement for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize – Laue’s accomplishments in promoting the theory of relativity were of crucial importance. They began early, well before most physicists even knew anything about a mysterious Swiss theoretician nam…

The future of health communication : innovating through partnerships

2015

The Preamble of the Constitution of the World Health Organization reminds us that «Informed opinion and active cooperation on the part of the public are of the utmost importance in the improvement of the health of the people» (Grad, 2002). Nonetheless, nearly seven decades later, the conditions under which people can be informed and actively participate in their health management in a meaningful way are being globally challenged. Drawing from experience in a variety of areas that I will delve into in this article, I remain a believer that we can marshal the necessary forces to advance the communication of health issues and create a base for a health-literate population to make smart(er), he…

2006

The first world wide symposium on the topic of gender-specific medicine provided the latest research on differences in sex and/or gender in medicine and medical care. The presentations ranged beyond the topic of reproduction to encompass the entire human organism. This report critically reviews three issues that emerged during the Conference: gender mainstreaming, the concept of sex/gender differences and the issue of men's health. It suggests that the interdisciplinary concept of gender-specific medicine has to be mirrored by the integration of social and cultural studies into medical research and practice.

Einstein’s gravitational field equations and the bianchi identities

2002

In his highly acclaimed biography of Einstein, Abraham Pais gave a fairly detailed analysis of the many difficulties his hero had to overcome in November 1915 before he finally arrived at generally covariant equations for gravitation (Pais 1982, 250–261).

HARVARD MEETS THE CRISIS: THE MONETARY THEORY AND POLICY OF LAUCHLIN B. CURRIE, JACOB VINER, JOHN H. WILLIAMS, AND HARRY D. WHITE

2015

The paper discusses the interpretation of the Great Depression and the policy decision making by four Harvard economists: Lauchlin B. Currie, Jacob Viner, John H. Williams, and Harry D. White. All were eminent scholars in the field of monetary and international economics, and were deeply involved in policy decisions during the New Deal. We will discuss how their Harvard training provided them with a common methodological and analytical perspective, and how this common perspective translated into specific policies when they moved from the academia to public service in the US administration. Their interpretation of the causes of the Great Depression and their policy proposals show the eclecti…
