Different KIRs Confer Susceptibility and Protection to Adults with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Latvian and Asian Indian Populations
2008
KIRs (killer Ig-like receptors) expressed on natural killer (NK) cells are an important component of innate (and adaptive) immunity. They are either activatory or inhibitory, and certain KIRs are known to interact with specific motifs of HLA Class I molecules, which is very crucial in determining whether a cell is targeted to lysis or otherwise. Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is a slowly progressive form of autoimmune diabetes, with an adult onset (>30 years). Because autoantibodies and autoimmunity involved are involved in the etiology of LADA, KIRs might play an important role in conferring susceptibility to or protection against the disease. The purpose of this study was to …
What's past is prologue: Recalled parenting styles are associated with childhood cancer survivors' mental health outcomes more than 25 years after di…
2019
Abstract Background With the increased survival rates of childhood cancer, long-term survivors' well-being over the life span has come into focus. A better understanding of the determinants of childhood cancer survivors' (CCS) mental health outcomes contributes to the identification of vulnerable individuals as well as to the development of evidence-based prevention and intervention efforts. It has been noted that psychosocial factors such as parental rearing behavior shape individual differences in mental health. There is also evidence that parents show altered parenting behavior in the face of childhood cancer, e. g. that they express more emotional support, but also more worries. However…
Unemployment transitions and self-rated health in Europe: A longitudinal analysis of EU-SILC from 2008 to 2011
2015
- The Great Recession of 2008 has led to elevated unemployment in Europe and thereby revitalised the question of causal health effects of unemployment. This article applies fixed effects regression models to longitudinal panel data drawn from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions for 28 European countries from 2008 to 2011, in order to investigate changes in self-rated health around the event of becoming unemployed. The results show that the correlation between unemployment and health is partly due to a decrease in self-rated health as people enter unemployment. Such health changes vary by country of domicile, and by individual age; older workers have a steeper decli…
Job characteristics, physical and psychological symptoms, and social support as antecedents of sickness absence among men and women in the private in…
2003
Most longitudinal studies on the relationship between psychosocial health resources and risks, and the employees' subsequent sickness absences have been conducted in the public sector. The purpose of this study was to find out psychosocial antecedents of sickness absenteeism in the private industrial sector. The effects of job characteristics (job autonomy and job complexity), physical and psychological symptoms, and social support (from coworkers and supervisors) on sickness absenteeism were investigated. The number of long (4-21 days) and very long (>21 days) sickness absence episodes of 3895 persons (76% men and 24% women, mean age 44 years) was obtained from the health registers of a mu…
Genetic control of immune response in carriers of the 8.1 ancestral haplotype: correlation with levels of IgG subclasses: its relevance in the pathog…
2007
Ancestral haplotype (AH) 8.1(HLA-A1, Cw7, B8, TNFAB*a2b3, TNFN*S, C2*C, Bf*s, C4A*Q0, C4B*1, DRB1*0301, DRB3*0101, DQA1*0501, DQB1*0201) seems to be associated with susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Different mechanisms are probably involved in increasing autoimmunity, such as unbalanced cytokine production and the lack of C4A protein. So AH 8.1 modifies immune response in many ways. In this study we demonstrate that IgG2 serum levels were significantly lower in 8.1 AH carriers than in 8.1 AH non-carriers. On the contrary, as regards IgG1, IgG3, IgG4 serum levels, no significant differences were observed between the two groups. In AH 8.1 carriers low IgG2 levels might take to slower cl…
Genetic control of immune response in carriers of ancestral haplotype 8.1: the study of chemotaxis.
2007
In all caucasian populations the association of an impressive number of autoimmune diseases with genes from the HLA-B8, DR3 hap- lotype that is part of the ancestral haplotype (AH) 8.1 HLA-A1, Cw7, B8, TNFAB∗a2b3, TNFN∗S, C2∗C, Bf∗s, C4A∗Q0, C4B∗1, DRB1∗0301, DRB3∗0101, DQA1∗0501, DQB1∗0201 has been reported by different research groups. This haplotype, which is more common in northern Europe, is also associated with a number of immune system dysfunctions in healthy subjects. Analyzing the data according to gender, some dysfunc- tions are observed in women but not in men, in agreement with the role of X-linked genes and/or estrogens in the development and progression of autoimmune diseases.…
The effect of physical activity on long-term income.
2013
Abstract Empirical evidence for the direct effects of physical activities on long-term labor market outcomes is limited. This state of affairs is surprising, because there is a growing amount of support on the positive effects of physical activities on health on the one hand and on the effects of good health on labor market outcomes on the other hand. We examine the long-term income effects of physical activity using a large sample ( N = 5042) of male twins from Finland (Older Finnish Twin Cohort Study, 1975, 1981, 1990), matched to detailed register-based income data (Finnish Longitudinal Employer-Employee Data, 1990–2004). Our primary income measure is calculated over a fifteen-year peri…
Medial Vestibular Nucleus Lesions in Wallenberg's Syndrome Cause Decreased Activity of the Contralateral Vestibular Cortex
2005
Three patients with the clinical diagnosis of Wallenberg's syndrome caused by acute unilateral ischemic infarctions, which included the vestibular nucleus in the medullary brain stem and afferent vestibular pathways, were examined by positron emission tomography (PET) during caloric vestibular stimulation. They all had typical signs of vestibular dysfunction such as transient rotatory vertigo with vomiting at the onset, ipsiversive body and ocular lateropulsion, and a complete ocular tilt reaction with tilts of the subjective visual vertical. Compared with healthy volunteers, who show activation in a network of temporoparietal vestibular areas within both hemispheres, especially in the post…
Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma: an immunohistochemical study
2009
UNLABELLED Hepatocarcinogenesis is a multistep process characterized by hepatocyte inflammation, regeneration, and proliferation. These changes are believed to depend on the aberrant expression of various tumor suppressor genes, oncogenes and growth factors. Several studies have shown the involvement of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the inducible isoform of the enzymes that catalyze prostaglandin synthesis in various aspects of carcinogenesis. COX-2 has been described as being overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Using immunohistochemistry, we studied COX-2 expression in different chronic liver diseases (CLD) including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), chronic hepatitis …
Interbrain emotional connection during music performances is driven by physical proximity and individual traits.
2021
How musical emotions and the pleasure derived from music, regardless of the musical valence, can be shared between individuals is a fascinating question, and investigating it can shed light on the function of musical reward. We carried out our investigations in a natural setting during an international competition for orchestra conductors. Participants (n = 15) used a dedicated smartphone app to report their subjective emotional experiences in real time while we recorded their cerebral activity using electroencephalography and their electrodermal activity. The overall behavioral real-time behavioral ratings suggest a possible social influence on the reported and felt pleasure. The physicall…
