A Task Execution Scheme for Dew Computing with State-of-the-Art Smartphones

2021

The computing resources of today’s smartphones are underutilized most of the time. Using these resources could be highly beneficial in edge computing and fog computing contexts, for example, to support urban services for citizens. However, new challenges, especially regarding job scheduling, arise. Smartphones may form ad hoc networks, but individual devices highly differ in computational capabilities and (tolerable) energy usage. We take into account these particularities to validate a task execution scheme that relies on the computing power that clusters of mobile devices could provide. In this paper, we expand the study of several practical heuristics for job scheduling including executi…

Barriers to the use of mobile sales force automation systems: a salesperson’s perspective

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the barriers associated with the adoption and use of mobile sales force automation (SFA) systems from a salesperson’s perspective. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative investigation of two business-to-business companies was conducted. Data collected from ten semi-structured interviews with directors or sales managers were analyzed to understand the main barriers to SFA system adoption. Findings – The study confirms the existence of three barriers (customer knowledge, quality of information and the characteristics of mobile devices) to a mobile SFA system use and identifies two additional barriers: lack of time and optimization issues…

Der kontrastive Ansatz in der Ausspracheschulung. Am Beispiel von DaF für Lerner mit Italienisch als Muttersprache

2021

Every learner has the right to acquire a good pronunciation, but unfortunately today, phonetics still plays a secondary role to grammar and vocabulary training in the classroom. Furthermore, it is primarily treated from an orthoepic point of view. This contribution presents a contrastive approach to phonetics. It explains why learners have a “foreign accent” and what contrastive pronunciation training should include as well as precisely what contrastive listening, contrastive background knowledge and contrastive exercises mean. It is limited to learners of German as a foreign language with Italian as their mother tongue.

"Phonebloks, or a phone developed by its future users" : user experiences of a forum for a modular phone concept

2016

In late 2013, a project caught my attention as being interesting to me and potentially a lot of others, innovative, and environmentally friendly: a smartphone project called Phonebloks. This timing fitting perfectly with the start of my Master's thesis as well as my personal interests, I observed it to see how it would develop. The official website which was created let users debate in order to decide where this Phonebloks project should go, so I decided to focus my efforts on it. This thesis describes perceptions of users regarding an online forum about a new kind of phone, called Phonebloks. On this forum they can debate about the future of the phone. I based my analysis on research on fo…

Implementation of laser speckle contrast analysis as connection kit for mobile phone for assessment of skin blood flow

2014

Laser speckle contrast analysis (LASCA) offers a non-contact, full-field, and real-time mapping of capillary blood flow and can be considered as an alternative method to Laser Doppler perfusion imaging. LASCA technique has been implemented in several commercial instruments. However, these systems are still too expensive and bulky to be widely available. Several optical techniques have found new implementations as connection kits for mobile phones thus offering low cost screening devices. In this work we demonstrate simple implementation of LASCA imaging technique as connection kit for mobile phone for primary low-cost assessment of skin blood flow. Stabilized 650 nm and 532 nm laser diode m…

Signs and transitions: Do they differ phonetically and does it matter?

2013

The point of departure of this article is the cluster of three pre-theoretical presuppositions (P) governing modern research on sign languages: (1) that a stream of signing consists of signs (S) and transitions (T), (2) that only Ss are linguistically relevant units, and (3) that there is a qualitative (e.g., phonetic) difference between Ss and Ts. Of these, the article focuses on the relatively untested P3, which is used to back up P1 and P2, and investigates the velocity and acceleration properties of Ss and Ts on the basis of continuous motion-capture data from Finnish Sign Language. The main finding of the study is that the speed of Ss is slower (and varies less) than that of Ts but tha…

Bengali nasal vowels: Lexical representation and listener perception

2022

This paper focuses on the question of the representation of nasality as well as speakers’ awareness and perceptual use of phonetic nasalisation by examining surface nasalisation in two types of vowels in Bengali: underlying nasal vowels (CṼC) and nasalised vowels before a nasal consonant (CVN). A series of three cross-modal forced-choice experiments was used to investigate the hypothesis that only unpredictable nasalisation is stored and that this sparse representation governs how listeners interpret vowel nasality. Visual full-word targets were preceded by auditory primes consisting of CV segments of CVC words with nasal vowels ([tʃɑ̃] for [tʃɑ̃d] ‘moon’), oral vowels ([tʃɑ] for [tʃɑl] ‘un…

D’Achille, P., 2010. L’italiano contemporaneo. Bologne : Il Mulino

2014

We make here the review of Paolo D’Achille’s L’italiano contemporaneo. The author deals with a lot of themes concerning contemporary Italian in this book: the situation of Italian language today (the fact that it is spoken along with dialects, its main characteristics, the italiano standard and the italiano dell’uso medio or neostandard); the onomastics (the first names, the ergonyms…); the lexicon (the basic Italian, the loan words…); the phonetics and the phonology (the Italian phonemes and the question of the consonant’s length, the structure of the syllable…); the inflected morphology (the system of the pronouns and the system of the verb and their innovations…); the lexical morphology …

¡Vaya Valla! El yeísmo en el español de Valencia

2016

In the last few years, the notion of yeismo has been approached from different perspectives; one of them is Sociolinguistics, the field in which the contribution of the present work is embedded. The aim of this article is to present the evolution of the phonetic process of delateralization of the phoneme /ʎ/ in favour of /ʝ/ in the use of Spanish by speakers in the bilingual speech community in Valencia and the sorrounding areas. From a traditional perspective, it was claimed that speakers in Valencia maintained the differentiation between the lateral and fricative palatals. However, more recent studies focus on the introduction and expansion of yeismo in particular areas in the Valencian r…
