Study of Even Gd Nuclei by Decay of Oriented Tb, With Analysis by Simple Boson Models

1983

We have studied low-spin states of 150,152,154,156Gd by nuclear orientation of β-decaying Tb in a Gd host. Especially by means of multipole mixing ratios, including E0/E2, we have checked and revised spin-parities and assignments to (quasi) rotational ground, β and γ bands. For 150Gd we propose the new interpretation 1207.2 keV (0β+), 1518.5 keV (2β+), 1700.1 keV (4β+), 1430.5 keV (2γ+), 1988.0 keV (3γ+), 2080.0 keV (4γ+). For 152,154,156Gd we find agreement with recent literature. Our comparison with theory includes available data on 158,160Gd and on states up to 10g+, 10β+, 7γ+. We review our previously proposed "projection model", which is basically of the Bohr-Mottelson geometrical type…

Optical phonons and electron-phonon interaction in quantum wires.

1993

A unified macroscopic continuum theory for the treatment of optical-phonon modes in quantum-wire structures is established. The theory is based on a Lagrangian formalism from which the equations of motion are rigorously derived. They consist of four coupled second-order differential equations for the vibrational amplitude and electrostatic potential. The matching boundary conditions are obtained from the fundamental equations. It is shown that no incompatibility exists between mechanical and electrostatic matching boundary conditions when a correct mathematical treatment of the problem is given. The particular case of a GaAs quantum wire buried in AlAs, where the phonons can be considered c…

A Unified Phenomenological Description of Quadrupole Excitations in Even-Even Nuclei

1976

A phenomenological model is developed for the collective quadrupole properties of all even-even nuclei. Rotational. vibrational and transitional nuclei are included in the model on an equal footing. A Bohr-type intrinsic Hamiltonian for harmonic quadrupole vibrations about an axially deformed shape is solved exactly. States of good angular momentum are projected out of the intrinsic states, and they are made orthogonal by a Schmidt scheme. The angular-momentum and phonon-number composition of the states is analyzed at various stages; states with K = 1 are found spurious. Excitation energies for the ground, β, and γ bands are calculated as expectation values of a radically simplified nuclear…

Phonon-to-spin mapping in a system of a trapped ion via optimal control

2015

We propose a protocol for measurement of the phonon number distribution of a harmonic oscillator based on selective mapping to a discrete spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We consider a system of a harmonically trapped ion, where a transition between two long-lived states can be driven with resolved motional sidebands. The required unitary transforms are generated by amplitude-modulated polychromatic radiation fields, where the time-domain ramps are obtained from numerical optimization by application of the chopped random basis algorithm (CRAB). We provide a detailed analysis of the scaling behavior of the attainable fidelities and required times for the mapping transform with respect to the size…

Two-Phonon Octupole Excitation in 146Gd

2006

The excited states in 146Gd have been re‐investigated with the 144Sm(α,2n) reaction using a modern Ge γ‐ray array including a polarimeter. Amongst the non‐yrast states populated in this reaction we have identified the aligned 6+ member of the two‐phonon octupole quartet from the observation of the E3 branching to the one phonon 3− state. Our results represent the first observation of a 6+→3−→0+ E3 cascade in an even‐even nucleus.

In-Beam Study of213Rn,215Ra and217Ra: Strongly Enhanced E3 Transitions in Odd-A N= 127 Isotones

1983

With the aim of searching for high-spin configurations involving the high-j neutron orbitals, excited states in 213Rn, 215Ra and 217Ra were populated in the bombardment of 208Pb with 13C ions. Gamma-ray singles, excitation functions and angular distributions, pulsed-beam-γ timing and γ-γ(t) coincidences were measured. Six isomeric levels were observed in 213Rn, three in 215Ra while none in 217Ra. The lowest-lying 15/2- states in all odd-A N = 127 isotones are de-excited by E3 transitions with a strength of about 23 W.u, suggesting that they are all coupled to the octupole phonon. In 217Ra no evidence for collective behavior is found despite its closeness to the actinide region. The low-lyin…

Longitudinal versus transverse spheroidal vibrational modes of an elastic sphere

2005

Analysis of the spheroidal modes of vibration of a free elastic sphere show that they can be qualitatively grouped into two categories: primarily longitudinal and primarily transverse. This is not a sharp distinction. However, there is a relatively stark contrast between the two kinds of modes. Primarily transverse modes have a small divergence and have frequencies that are almost functionally independent of the longitudinal speed of sound. Analysis of inelastic light scattering intensity from confined acoustic phonons in nanoparticles requires an understanding of this qualitative distinction between different spheroidal modes. In addition, some common misconceptions about spheroidal modes …

Optical phonon modes of wurtzite InP

2013

Optical vibration modes of InP nanowires in the wurtzite phase were investigated by Raman scattering spectroscopy. The wires were grown along the [0001] axis by the vapor-liquid-solid method. The A1(TO), E2h, and E1(TO) phonon modes of the wurtzite symmetry were identified by using light linearly polarized along different directions in backscattering configuration. Additionally, forbidden longitudinal optical modes have also been observed. Furthermore, by applying an extended 11-parameter rigid-ion model, the complete dispersion relations of InP in the wurtzite phase have been calculated, showing a good agreement with the Raman experimental data.

Effect ofA-site andB-site substitution on the infrared reflectivity spectra ofLa1−yAyMn1−xBxO3(A=Ba,Sr;B=Cu,Zn,Sc;0<y<~0.3;0<~x<~0.1)mang…

2003

We have measured the infrared reflectivity spectra of ${\mathrm{La}}_{1\ensuremath{-}y}[\mathrm{Sr}(\mathrm{Ba}){]}_{y}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}[\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{Zn},\mathrm{Sc}){]}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ $(0lyl~0.3,0l~xl~0.10)$ manganites, in a wide frequency $(100\char21{}4000{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ and temperature (80 K\char21{}300 K) range. The reflectivity spectra were analyzed by a fitting procedure based on a model that includes Drude, midinfrared electronic, and phonon oscillator contributions to the dielectric constant. Six infrared active ${(3A}_{u}$ and ${3E}_{u})$ modes of rhombohedral symmetry are clearly observed. We assigned all observed modes according to e…
