Mapping acoustical activity in 3D chiral mechanical metamaterials onto micropolar continuum elasticity

2020

Abstract We compare the phonon band structures and chiral phonon eigenmodes of a recently experimentally realized three-dimensional (3D) cubic chiral metamaterial architecture to results from linear micropolar elasticity, an established generalization of classical linear Cauchy elasticity. We achieve very good qualitative agreement concerning the anisotropies of the eigenfrequencies, the anisotropies of the eigenmode properties of the acoustic branches, as well as with respect to the observed pronounced sample-size dependence of acoustical activity and of the static push-to-twist conversion effects. The size dependence of certain properties, that is, the loss of scale invariance, is a finge…

Optomechanical systems close to the conservative limit

2017

In dissipative optomechanical systems, the total damping hits negative values at the parametric instability point. This also corresponds to the phonon lasing threshold, where the mechanical resonator enters in the self-induced oscillations regime. This paper shows that the two mentioned phenomena are delayed from each other when the optomechanical systems operate close to their conservative limit, where the mechanical damping is very small. In fact, the total damping can be negative and very small for a while before the phonon lasing happens. As a result, the linearized theory is extended over the negative damping region where the mechanical displacements remain very small. It follows that …

Thermodynamic properties of neutral and charged oxygen vacancies in BaZrO3 based on first principles phonon calculations.

2015

The structural, electronic and thermodynamic properties of neutral and positively doubly charged oxygen vacancies in BaZrO3 are addressed by first principles phonon calculations. The calculations are performed using two complementary first principles approaches and functionals; the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) within the hybrid Hartree–Fock and density functional theory formalism (HF-DFT), and the projector augmented plane wave approach (PAW) within DFT. Phonons are shown to contribute significantly to the formation energy of the charged oxygen vacancy at high temperatures (∼1 eV at 1000 K), due to both its large distortion of the local structure, and its large negative form…

Renormalization of the Fröhlich constant for electrons in a quantum dot

2002

Recent experimental investigations of far-infrared attenuation in GaAs/InAs quantum dot in magnetic field and measurements of photoluminescence features for smaller pyramid-shape GaAs/InAs quantum dots indicated an enhancement of coupling of longitudinal optical phonons with confined electrons, which manifested itself in a significant increase of the effective Frohlich constant in comparison to its bulk value. We give a simple quasiclassical explanation of this enhancement and relate the renormalization of the Frohlich constant with the dot diameter.

The effect of active photons on dynamical frustration in cavity QED

2020

We study the far-from-equilibrium dynamical regimes of a many-body spin boson model with disordered couplings relevant for cavity QED and trapped ions experiments, using the discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA). We focus on the dynamics of spin observables upon varying the disorder strength and the frequency of the photons, finding that the latter can considerably alter the structure of the system's dynamical responses. When the photons evolve at a similar rate as the spins, they can induce qualitatively distinct frustrated dynamics characterized by either logarithmic or algebraically slow relaxation. The latter illustrates resilience of glassy-like dynamics in the presence of act…

Ballistic phonon transport in dielectric membranes

2006

We have calculated the ballistic phononic heat transport in dielectric membranes as a function of radiator temperature and membrane thickness. The phonon modes of such membranes are known as Lamb-modes from elasticity theory. The striking result is that, for a fixed temperature, the radiated power first decreases with decreasing membrane thickness, but then develops a minimum when the transition to two dimensionality is reached. Further decrease of the membrane thickness in the 2D limit leads to increasing radiated power.

Raman and Infrared Spectra of Acoustical, Functional Modes of Proteins from All-Atom and Coarse-Grained Normal Mode Analysis

2018

The directions of the largest thermal fluctuations of the structure of a protein in its native state are the directions of its low-frequency modes (below 1 THz), named acoustical modes by analogy with the acoustical phonons of a material. The acoustical modes of a protein assist its conformational changes and are related to its biological functions. Low-frequency modes are difficult to detect experimentally. A survey of experimental data of low-frequency modes of proteins is presented. Theoretical approaches, based on normal mode analysis, are of first interest to understand the role of the acoustical modes in proteins. In this chapter, the fundamentals of normal mode analysis using all-ato…

Compact entanglement distillery using realistic quantum memories

2013

We adopt the beam splitter model for losses to analyse the performance of a recent compact continuous-variable entanglement distillation protocol [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 060502, (2012)] implemented using realistic quantum memories. We show that the decoherence undergone by a two-mode squeezed state while stored in a quantum memory can strongly modify the results of the preparatory step of the protocol. We find that the well-known method for locally increasing entanglement, phonon subtraction, may not result in entanglement gain when losses are taken into account. Thus, we investigate the critical number $m_c$ of phonon subtraction attempts from the matter modes of the quantum memory. If the …

Dephasing of orbital and spin degrees of freedom in semiconductor quantum dots due to phonons and magnons

2006

Phonon-induced decoherence of orbital degrees of freedom in quantum dots (QDs) (GaAs/InAs) is studied and the relevant time-scales are estimated versus dot dimension. Dephasing of excitons due to acoustic phonons and optical phonons, including enhancement of the effective Frohlich constant caused by localization, is assessed for the state-of-art QDs. Temporal inefficiency of Pauli blocking in QDs due to lattice inertia is additionally predicted. For QD placed in a diluted magnetic semiconductor medium a magnon induced dephasing of spin is estimated in accordance with experimental results for Zn(Mn)Se/CdSe. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Coherent and incoherent phonon processes in artificial atoms

2003

Carrier-phonon interaction in semiconductor quantum dots leads to three classes of phenomena: coherent effects (spectrum reconstruction) due to the nearly-dispersionless LO phonons, incoherent effects (transitions) induced by acoustical phonons and dressing phenomena, related to non-adiabatic, sub-picosecond excitation. Polaron spectra, relaxation times and dressing-related decoherence rates are calculated, in accordance with experiment.
