Acquired resistance of melanoma cells to the antineoplastic agent fotemustine is caused by reactivation of the DNA repair gene mgmt
2001
Acquired resistance to antineoplastic agents is a frequent obstacle in tumor therapy. Malignant melanoma cells are particularly well known for their unresponsiveness to chemotherapy; only about 30% of tumors exhibit a transient clinical response to treatment. In our study, we investigated the molecular mechanism of acquired resistance of melanoma cells (MeWo) to the chloroethylating drug fotemustine. Determination of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) activity showed that MeWo cells that acquired resistance to fotemustine upon repeated treatment with the drug display high MGMT activity, whereas the parental cell line had no detectable MGMT. The resistant cell lines exhibit cross-…
Nitrogen and phosphorus budgets in experimental grasslands of variable diversity.
2007
Previous research has shown that plant diversity influences N and P cycles. However, the effect of plant diversity on complete ecosystem N and P budgets has not yet been assessed. For 20 plots of artificially established grassland mixtures differing in plant diversity, we determined N and P inputs by bulk and dry deposition and N and P losses by mowing (and subsequent removal of the biomass) and leaching from April 2003 to March 2004. Total deposition of N and P was 2.3 +/- 0.1 and 0.2 +/- 0.01 g m(-2) yr(-1), respectively. Mowing was the main N and P loss. The net N and P budgets were negative (-6.3 +/- 1.1 g N and -1.9 +/- 0.2 g P m(-2) yr(-1)). For N, this included a conservative estimat…
Mammalian intestinal alkaline phosphatase acts as highly active exopolyphosphatase.
2001
Recent results revealed that inorganic polyphosphates (polyP), being energy-rich linear polymers of orthophosphate residues known from bacteria and yeast, also exist in higher eukaryotes. However, the enzymatic basis of their metabolism especially in mammalian cells is still uncertain. Here we demonstrate for the first time that alkaline phosphatase from calf intestine (CIAP) is able to cleave polyP molecules up to a chain length of about 800. The enzyme acts as an exopolyphosphatase degrading polyP in a processive manner. The pH optimum is in the alkaline range. Divalent cations are not required for catalytic activity but inhibit the degradation of polyP. The rate of hydrolysis of short-ch…
Does phosphorus affect the industrial Portland cement reactivity?
2018
Abstract The effect of phosphorous on the mineralogy and reactivity of Portland cement has been investigated through an industrial clinkers series. The samples were collected from the same Tunisian cement plant and classified according to the content of P2O5 from 0.5% to 1.1%. All samples were manufactured at the same thermal and cooling conditions as well as possible. The specimens were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and optical microscopy techniques and their mineralogy was determined by X-ray powder diffraction coupled to the Rietveld analysis. The cements reactivity prepared from the clinkers was followed by means of isothermalcalorimetry. The compressive strength of t…
2020 Roadmap on two-dimensional nanomaterials for environmental catalysis
2019
Abstract Environmental catalysis has drawn a great deal of attention due to its clean ways to produce useful chemicals or carry out some chemical processes. Photocatalysis and electrocatalysis play important roles in these fields. They can decompose and remove organic pollutants from the aqueous environment, and prepare some fine chemicals. Moreover, they also can carry out some important reactions, such as O2 reduction reaction (ORR), O2 evolution reaction (OER), H2 evolution reaction (HER), CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), and N2 fixation (NRR). For catalytic reactions, it is the key to develop high-performance catalysts to meet the demand for targeted reactions. In recent years, two-dimen…
Discrimination of nerve gases mimics and other organophosphorous derivatives in gas phase using a colorimetric probe array.
2012
A colorimetric array for the chromogenic discrimination of organophosphorous derivatives in gas phase has been developed. The array allows us to classify the nerve agent simulants DFP, DCP and DCNP.
Prediction of acute toxicity of organophosphorus pesticides using topological indices
2007
Topological indices were used in the prediction of the acute toxicity (intraperitoneal and oral LD(50)) of organophosphorus pesticides on rats. Models with six variables for the prediction of LD(50)-i.p. (r = 0.849, Q(2) = 0.613) and eight variables for LD(50)-oral (r = 0.906, Q(2) = 0.701) were selected. External group and cross-validation by use of leave-n-out tests were also performed in order to assess the stability and the prediction performance of the selected topological models.
NMR spectroscopy in environmental chemistry:1H and13C NMR parameters of tricyclic polychlorinated C10 hydrocarbons and their oxy derivatives based on…
1999
Two-dimensional homo- and heteronuclear NMR chemical shift correlation techniques were applied in the characterization of five tricyclic polychlorinated C10 hydrocarbons, chlordene (1), heptachlor (2), trans-nonachlor (3), α-chlordene (4) and γ-chlordene (5), which are spread globally in the environment owing to their use as insecticides. Approximate and partly contradictory 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts reported in the literature were corrected in this work. The chemical shift assignments of 1–5 were based on DQF COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments. In addition, an INADEQUATE experiment was needed to ascertain the 13C chemical shifts assignment of 2. The nJ(H,H)s of 1–5 were solved by compute…
Transition metal derivatives of low oxidation state phosphorus oxoacids: synthetic pathways and structural studies
1993
Abstract A general synthetic approach intended to rationalize the solution preparative chemistry of transition metal phosphites and hypophosphites is presented. As previously shown for other derivatives containing also tetrahedral or pseudotetrahedral oxoanions, the hydrolytic processes affecting the cationic moieties play a determinant role on the very nature of the final solid. In fact, despite the limited number of donor atoms in the anions, the crystal chemistry of these compounds is quite intricate because of both the variety of possible cationic aggregates and the many ways to interconnect them through pseudotetrahedral anionic groups.
