Quasi-isoactinic reactor for photocatalytic kinetics studies

2007

Photochemical reactors characterized by almost uniform values of the local volumetric rate of photon absorption (LVRPA), i.e., quasi-isoactinic photoreactors, are particularly suitable for assessing the influence of radiant field intensity in kinetic studies. In this work, Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to obtain LVRPA values in a flat photoreactor irradiated on both sides. This configuration appears to be particularly suitable for obtaining quasi-isoactinic conditions. The influence of catalyst albedo and scattering phase function is assessed, and the conditions for obtaining iso-actinicity are discussed. Finally, these conditions are related to an easy-to-measure parameter, n…

Co doped ZnO nanowires as visible light photocatalysts

2016

Abstract High aspect ratio cobalt doped ZnO nanowires showing strong photocatalytic activity and moderate ferromagnetic behaviour were successfully synthesized using a solvothermal method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities evaluated for visible light driven degradation of an aqueous methylene orange (MO) solution were higher than for Co doped ZnO nanoparticles at the same doping level and synthesized by the same synthesis route. The rate constant for MO visi…

Self-Cleaning Bending Sensors Based on Semitransparent ZnO Nanostructured Films

2023

The design of multifunctional nanostructured materials is the key to the development of smart wearable devices. For instance, nanostructures endowed with both piezoelectric and photocatalytic activities could well be the workhorse for solar-light-driven self-cleaning wearable sensors. In this work, a simple strategy for the assembly of a flexible, semitransparent piezophotocatalytic system is demonstrated by leveraging rational wet chemistry synthesis of ZnO-based nanosheets/nanoflowers (NSs/NFs) under basic pH conditions onto flexible ITO/PET supports. A KMnO4 pretreatment before the ZnO synthesis (seeded ZnO) allows for the control of the density, size, and orientation of the NSs/NFs syst…

ZnO(core)/TiO2(shell) composites : influence of TiO2 microstructure, N-doping and decoration with Au nanoparticles on photocatalytic and photoelectro…

2017

The aim of the thesis is to study the influence of microstructure of ZnO/TiO2 composites on their properties in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, and in photoassisted water oxidation. To realize such study we chose the design based on ZnO nanorods supported on ITO (Indium Tin Oxide)-coated glass electrode. The ZnO nanorods were then covered with a layer of TiO2 under different conditions. The composition and microstructure of the obtained ZnO(core)/TiO2(shell) composites were modified in the aim to elucidate how these parameters influence their photocatalytic activity. The results of studies lead to elaboration of two most distinctive variants of sol-gel procedure that allow…

Photocatalytic oxidation of acetonitrile in gas–solid and liquid–solid regimes

2005

Il programma NON mi ha consentito di scaricare il PDF di questo articolo. Se lo volete ditemi come inviarlo ABSTRACT Photocatalytic degradation of acetonitrile was carried out in both gas–solid and liquid–solid regimes using two commercial TiO2 catalysts (Merck and Degussa P25). For the gas–solid regime, a continuous annular photoreactor was used. The influence on photodegradation kinetics of the gas flow rate and concentrations of acetonitrile, oxygen, and water was investigated. Acetonitrile degradation products detected in the gas phase included carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide. The same photoactivity was exhibited in the presence and in the absence of water vapour. The liquid–solid reg…

Photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO2-based materials embedded with gold NPs for applications in antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT)

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a potential treatment for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. It is based on the photosensitization of bacterial cells with exogenous agents that, when exposed to light, produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as OH-, O2-, H2O2. ROS can induce complex oxidative-reductive chains of reactions, resulting in damage of cellular components in target tissues1. Photocatalysts, like inorganic semiconductor oxides, represent an interesting class of materials to design new strategies for aPTD. As exposed to light of proper wavelengths, photocatalysts induce the formation of electron-hole pairs capable of producing a cascade of reactions suitable …

A novel TiO2-assisted magnetic nanoparticle separator for treatment and inactivation of bacterial contaminants in aquatic systems

2014

Ferromagnetic nanoparticles (Fe-nanoparticles) have been functionalized with recombinant poly- Glu [glutamic acid]-tagged silicatein, a biomineral-synthesizing enzyme from siliceous sponges that forms the inorganic silica skeleton of those animals. The biocatalytic activity of silicatein was used to form a titania (TiO2) shell around the iron nanoparticle core, using the water-soluble non- natural substrate titanium bis(ammonium lactato)-dihydroxide (TiBALDH). Thereby the diameter of the nanoparticles increases from 7 nm to ≈22 nm. This procedure also allows the layer-by-layer fabrication of titania/silica- Fe-nanoparticles. SEM/EDX analysis confirmed the presence of the Ti and Si signals i…

(Photo)electrocatalytic Versus Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

2021

The present review summarizes some of the main results achieved in electrochemical, photocatalytic, and (photo)-electrocatalytic systems for the reduction of carbon dioxide. After a preliminary survey of the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic systems in terms of materials used, efficiencies, operating conditions, and product distribution, it is shown how the combination of the two approaches affords often higher efficiency than the single technologies and allows better control of the product distribution. In fact, the peculiar energetic distribution at the interface of irradiated semiconductors under opportune electrical bias enables enhancement of the spatial separation of the photogenera…
