Influence of metallic silver and of platinum-silver bimetallic deposits on the photocatalytic activity of titania (anatase and rutile) in organic and…

1998

Abstract The influence of deposited silver upon the photocatalytic activity of titania in the rutile and anatase allotropic forms has been studied in three different reactions. The common feature found for these three reactions was an electron transfer from illuminated TiO 2 to silver particles. In the first reaction (platinum photodeposition). it has been shown that the initial presence of metallic silver orientates the localization of subsequent Pt photodeposits with, in particular, a 100% selectivity to Pt deposition on top of silver particles or agglomerates previously deposited on anatase. In the second reaction (2-propanol oxidation), Ag deposit was found beneficial for the activity o…

A structural investigation of titanium dioxide photocatalysts

1991

Abstract A study of the structure and the morphology of a titanium dioxide photocatalyst (Degussa P25) reveals multiphasic material consisting of an amorphous state, together with the crystalline phases anatase and rutile in the approximate proportions 80 20 . Transmission electron microscopy provides evidence that some individual particles are a mixture of the amorphous state with either the anatase phase or with the rutile phase, and that some particles, which are mostly anatase, are covered by a thin overlayer of rutile which manifests its presence by the appearance of Moire fringes. The photocatalytic activity of this form of titanium dioxide is reported as being greater than the activi…

Alkaline treatment as a means to boost the activity of TiO(2)in selective photocatalytic processes

2020

In this work, the activity enhancement of TiO(2)photocatalysts by alkaline treatment has been investigated. Commercial (BDH, U.K., anatase phase) TiO(2)samples, treated in alkaline solutions of NaOH at different concentrations and temperatures, were tested for the photocatalytic partial oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol in water under UVA irradiation to form vitamin B-3. Photocatalyst characterization has been carried out by XRD, BET, TEM, TGA, photoluminescence, FTIR, Raman, DRS, EPR and photocurrent measurements. The alkaline-treated samples showed an increased activity of up to 7 times (by considering first order rate constant values) compared to untreated BDH and the superior performance …

Photocatalytic degradation of carbaryl in aqueous TiO2 suspensions containing surfactants

1999

The effect of ionic and non-ionic aliphatic surfactants on the photocatalytic degradation of Carbaryl (1-naphtyl-N-methylcarbamate) in aqueous solutions containing suspended TiO2 (anatase) particles, under irradiation with simulated AM1 solar light, was investigated. A neat inhibitory effect on the degradation rate was observed, depending on the nature of the surfactant and on the initial pH of the solution. The decay profiles of the primary process corresponded to the usual pseudo-first order kinetics for surfactant concentrations below the critical micellar concentration range, whereas a more complicate behaviour was observed in the presence of micellar aggregates. Mineralization of the p…

Influence of Silver Deposits on the Photocatalytic Activity of Titania

1997

The objectives of depositing metals over semiconductor photocatalysts are to improve the electron-hole pair separation and to increase the rate of the reduction process due to the catalytic properties of the metal itself. Most of the deposited (noble) metals that have been studied belonged to group VIII. Very few studies concerned silver deposits. In the present work, the influence of deposited silver over anatase or rutile has been followed in three different types of reactions: (i) metal deposition, (ii) oxidation, and (iii) dehydrogenation. The final solids obtained in the last reaction (Pt/Ag/TiO{sub 2}) were also used as catalysts in two other test reactions to make comparison with TiO…

Fourier Transform Infrared Study of the Performance of Nanostructured TiO2 Particles for the Photocatalytic Oxidation of Gaseous Toluene

2001

Thermal and hydrothermal treatments have been applied to an amorphous TiO2 precursor for obtaining nanosized TiO2 particles (P11t and P11h, respectively) of different photocatalytic properties. The activity of these catalysts has been tested by performing the toluene oxidation in gas phase in a continuous photoreactor. A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) investigation of the catalysts under conditions prevailing during the test photoreaction has also been carried out. The photoreactivity results showed that CO2 was the main oxidation product and benzaldehyde a stable intermediate. Anatase P11t photoactivity was similar to that observed for commercial photocatalysts, while anatase P11h prese…

Photoactivity of shape-controlled TiO2 in gas-solid regime under solar irradiation

2019

Abstract Differently shape-controlled anatase TiO2 materials were tested as photocatalysts under both simulated and natural solar irradiation. Their photocatalytic activity in 2-propanol and propene partial oxidation and in the complete mineralization of acetaldehyde appears to increase with decreasing the shape control of the TiO2 material. This insight seems to be related to the residual presence of the templating species (fluoride anions) employed during the preparation of the shape-controlled TiO2 materials. In fact, the calcination of the powders, leading to levelling of the fluoride ions content, but also to a remarkable surface area decrease, gave rise to an increase of photocatalyti…

TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in aqueous solutions

2010

Abstract Nanostructured TiO 2 photocatalysts were synthesized by thermohydrolysis of TiCl 4 at 100 °C in various aqueous solutions. Anatase or rutile, binary mixtures of anatase and rutile or anatase and brookite, and ternary mixtures of anatase, brookite and rutile were obtained depending on the hydrolysis solution. The most efficient catalysts consisted of ternary mixtures of the three polymorphic TiO 2 phases.

One-Dimensional TiO2-B Crystals Synthesised by Hydrothermal Process and Their Antibacterial Behaviour on Escherichia coli

2016

We have successfully synthesised one-dimensional single crystals of monoclinic phase titanium dioxide nanostructures (TiO2-B), prepared by a hydrothermal process. Morphological characterization was carried out by atomic force and scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. In order to study the crystalline structure, samples were calcined at 500°C in an air-filled chamber. X-ray diffraction results indicated that as-prepared samples presented diffraction patterns of hydrate hydrogen titanate and those calcined at 500°C exhibited the TiO2-B and anatase phases, confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the one-dimensional nanostructures ha…

Highly Active Photocatalytic TiO2 Powders Obtained by Thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in Water

2009

Highly active photocatalytic TiO2 samples were synthesized by thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in water at 100 °C. Rutile, binary mixtures of anatase and rutile or anatase and brookite or ternary mixtures of anatase, brookite, and rutile were obtained depending on the TiCl4/H2O ratio. Rietveld refinements were employed to evaluate the crystalline phases and composition of the mixtures. The effect of the aging time on the phase composition was also studied. The band gap values of the samples were obtained by the diffuse reflectance spectra. The position of the flat band potentials of anatase, brookite, and rutile was determined measuring the photovoltage as a function of the suspension pH. From the…
