UTSW Small Animal Positron Emission Imager

A Small Animal Imager (SAI) for PET has been designed, built, tested in phantoms, and applied to investigations in mice and rats. The device uses principles based on gamma-ray induced scintillation in crossed fiber optic detectors connected to Position Sensitive Photomultiplier Tubes (PSPMT). Each detector consists of an epoxied stack of 28 layers of 135 round 1 mm BCF-10 scintillating plastic fibers. The overlap region forms a 13.5times13.5times2.8 cm3 detector volume. Scintillating light from the fibers is detected by two (X and Y directions) Hamamatsu R-2486 PSPMTs with 16 anode wires in each of two orthogonal directions. Design and status of COMPASS FAST-RICH

In the context of the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, we are developing a fast photodetection system for RICH counters, based on UV extended Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT) and a custom, low dead-time electronic readout system. Photons are concentrated on the MAPMT photocathode by an optical system that preserves the position information. The ratio between the collection and the photosensitive surfaces is ∼7.5 in our design, larger than in previous applications. A new front-end electronics, based on a modified version of the MAD4 discriminator chip, is being realized to digitize the MAPMT signals. Breakthrough in the lifetime of microchannel plate photomultipliers

Abstract Cherenkov detectors using the DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov Light) principle are foreseen for particle identification in the P ¯ ANDA experiment at FAIR. Promising sensors for the detection of the Cherenkov light are the so-called micro-channel plate (MCP) photomultipliers (PMT). They have an excellent time resolution, can be operated at high gain for single photon detection and have a high resistivity against magnetic fields. The disadvantage of these devices was their limited lifetime, due to damage by feedback ions on the photocathode. Fast photon detection for COMPASS RICH-1

A fast photon detection system has been built and assembled for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The system is based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to fused silica lenses to collect the light from a larger surface and to guide it to the photocathode, preserving the position information. The emphasis is on the fast response and high rate capability of the detectors and the associated electronics. The photon detection system is now ready and it will be employed in the 2006 COMPASS data taking. We report about the system design and construction.

Inverted-conical light guide for crosstalk reduction in tightly-packed scintillator matrix and MAPMT assembly

Abstract In this paper we present the Inverted-Conical light guide designed for optical crosstalk reduction in the scintillator-MAPMT assemblies. The research was motivated by the 30% crosstalk observed in UFFO X-ray telescope , UBAT, during the preliminary calibration with MAPMTs of 64 2.88 × 2.88 mm2 pixels and identically gridded YSO crystal matrices. We began the study with the energy and crosstalk calibrations of the detector, then we constructed a GEANT4 simulation with the customized metallic film model as the MAPMT photocathode . Deep sea tests of a prototype of the KM3NeT digital optical module: KM3NeT Collaboration

The first prototype of a photo-detection unit of the future KM3NeT neutrino telescope has been deployed in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This digital optical module has a novel design with a very large photocathode area segmented by the use of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes. It has been integrated in the ANTARES detector for in-situ testing and validation. This paper reports on the first months of data taking and rate measurements. The analysis results highlight the capabilities of the new module design in terms of background suppression and signal recognition. The polarization dependence of x‐ray photoelectron yield of a Au photocathode

We report a measurement of the total photoelectron yield of gold as a function of the incident x‐ray polarization. Polarized x rays with energies of 2.5, 2.7, and 4.0 keV were used to excite a gold photocathode at a glancing incidence angle between 5° and 50°. Contrary to a previous report, we found no measurable polarization dependence for all three x‐ray energies. We conclude that the modulation factor, i.e., the fractional change of the total yield when the polarization state is varied, is less than 4%.
