Nonadiabatic orientation, toroidal current, and induced magnetic field in BeO molecules.

2008

It is predicted that oriented BeO molecules would give rise to unprecedentedly strong, unidirectional electric ring current and an associated magnetic field upon excitation by a right or left circularly polarized laser pulse into the first excited degenerate singlet state. The strong toroidal electric ring current of this state is dominated by the ring current of the 1π± orbital about the molecular axis. Our predictions are based on the analysis of the orbital composition of the states involved and are substantiated by high level electronic structure calculations and wavepacket simulations of the laser-driven orientation and excitation dynamics. There have been a number of recent experimental investigations of the nonadiabatic relaxation dynamics of aniline following excitation to the first three singlet excited states, 1(1)ππ*, 1(1)π3s/πσ* and 2(1)ππ*. Motivated by differences between the interpretations of experimental observations, we have employed CASSCF and XMCQDPT2 calculations to explore the potential energy landscape and relaxation pathways of photoexcited aniline. We find a new prefulvene-like MECI connecting the 1(1)ππ* state with the GS in which the carbon-atom carrying the amino group is distorted out-of-plane. This suggests that excitation above the 1(1)π3s/πσ* vertical excitation energy could be followed by electronic…

Luminescence of dense, octahedral structured crystalline silicon dioxide (stishovite)

2011

Abstract It is obtained that, as grown, non-irradiated stishovite single crystals possess a luminescence center. Three excimer pulsed lasers (KrF, 248 nm; ArF, 193 nm; F 2 , 157 nm) were used for photoluminescence (PL) excitation. Two PL bands were observed. One, in UV range with the maximum at 4.7±0.1 eV with FWHM equal to 0.95±0.1 eV, mainly is seen under ArF laser. Another, in blue range with the maximum at 3±0.2 eV with FWHM equal to 0.8±0.2 eV, is seen under all three lasers. The UV band main fast component of decay is with time constant τ =1.2±0.1 ns for the range of temperatures 16–150 K. The blue band decay possesses fast and slow components. The fast component of the blue band deca…

Probing light-induced conformational transitions in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers embedded in trehalose-water amorphous matrices.

2004

Abstract The coupling between electron transfer and protein dynamics has been studied in photosynthetic reaction centers (RC) from Rhodobacter sphaeroides by embedding the protein into room temperature solid trehalose–water matrices. Electron transfer kinetics from the primary quinone acceptor (Q A − ) to the photoxidized donor (P + ) were measured as a function of the duration of photoexcitation from 20 ns (laser flash) to more than 1 min. Decreasing the water content of the matrix down to ≈5×10 3 water molecules per RC causes a reversible four-times acceleration of P + Q A − recombination after the laser pulse. By comparing the broadly distributed kinetics observed under these conditions …

Reducing the contribution of the photoemission process to the unwanted beam in photoelectron sources at accelerators

2017

Negative electron affinity (NEA) GaAs photocathodes show different pulse responses depending on the wavelength of photoexcitation. The pulse response at 800 nm shows a long and relatively intense tail, whereas at 400 nm, a tail of similar shape but with an intensity lower by around two orders of magnitude is observed. We explain this behavior with the specific properties of NEA photocathodes and compare it with the response of a positive electron affinity photocathode.

Circular Dichroism in Photoemission from Nonmagnetic, Low- Z Solids: A Conspicuous Effect of the Photon Spin

1992

A new phenomenon has been observed in solid-state photoemission with circularly polarized light. Its outward appearance is similar to the circular dichroism in photoabsorption. For special observation geometries, large photoelectron intensity asymmetries arise upon reversal of the photon helicity. The effect is not based on spin-orbit interaction, as is demonstrated by the example of photoemission from graphite (Z = 6). Similar asymmetries are expected for all single-crystal solids thus opening up a new class of experiments providing new tests for photoemission theories. Detailed information on the dynamics of photoexcitation of a solid can be gained, as discussed in terms of a simple orbit…

Spin polarized electron transport and partial localization of photoelectrons in highly doped photocathodes

2011

The results of experimental and theoretical studies of spin polarized electron transport in semiconductor SL used for photoemitter application are presented. The experimental study is based on the time resolved measurements of electron emission from the cathode after its photoexcitation by fs laser pulse. The response and spin relaxation times have been determined by means of measured time dependent intensity and polarization of electron emission. We also performed theoretical calculations of photocathode pulse response and compared the obtained results with experimental data. Our analysis testifies the presence of partial electron localization in SL. Electron capture by localized states le…

Investigating surface magnetism by means of photoexcitation electron emission microscopy

2002

The imaging of surfaces by means of photoexcitation electron emission microscopy (PEEM) has recently received considerable interest. This is mainly due to the extended use and availability of brilliant synchrotron radiation in the soft x-ray regime which generally facilitates studies with surface specificity and chemical selectivity. The most popular application of the x-ray PEEM (XPEEM) technique concerns studies of magnetic systems and phenomena. By exploiting the high degree of circular or linear polarization of the synchrotron light, the magnetic microstructure in both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets can be visualized. In this contribution we demonstrate the unique potential and the v…

New sum rule for the nuclear magnetic polarizability

2015

I extend the well-known photonuclear sum rule that relates the strength of the photoexcitation of the giant dipole resonance in a nucleus to the number of elementary scatterers-nucleons to the case of virtual photons. The new sum rule relates the size of the magnetic polarizability of a nucleus to the slope of the transverse virtual photoabsorption cross section integrated over the energy in the nuclear range. I check this sum rule for the deuteron where necessary data is available, discuss possible applications and connection with other sum rules postulated in the literature.
