Integral photography is an auto-stereoscopic technique that allows, among other interesting applications, the display of 3D images with full parallax and avoids the painful effects of the accommodation-convergence conflict. Currently, one of the main drawbacks of this technology is the need of a huge amount of data, which have to be stored and transmitted. In this paper we present the prototype of a teledentistry system to perform the remote diagnosis of oral diseases. It makes use of a particular device called intra-oral (or dental) camera properly designed to shoot video and take pictures of the inner part of the mouth. The intra-oral cameras can be connected via USB to a common PC and they are very cheap, unlike the intra-oral photography kit for DSLR cameras. Usually this kind of devices are used in dentistry studies for local visualization by means of specialized software. Algorithms for transforming an integral photography into a plenoptic picture

We report a simple algorithm for transforming the set of elemental images captured with an integral-photography set up, into the set of micro-images ready to be projected into an integral-imaging monitor. The method is based in the transposing relation between an integral photography and a plenoptic picture. The reported technique permits to adapt the integral images to the resolution and size of the monitor.
Marine caves of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea: a First Census of Benthic Biodiversity

This is the first paper documenting research on a selection of marine caves located along the coast of Capo Milazzo in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. Three submarine and one semi-submerged caves were surveyed and sampled using underwater photo sampling. Surveys have only taken into account the sessile species belonging to the main taxa: Porifera, Anthozoa, Bryozoa and Polychaeta. Diversity indices and abundances were calculated for three sections within each explored cave: the Entrance Zone, Intermediate Zone and Bottom Zone. The richest group was Porifera with 21 taxa, followed by cnidarians, (Anthozoa), with 8 taxa, Polychaeta (5 taxa), and Bryozoa (5 taxa). Among Porifera, the presence of …

An improved photographic method to estimate the shading effect of obstructions

Abstract A new photographic method is presented to evaluate the shading effects of obstructions on surfaces exposed to the sun. The method overcomes the difficulties caused by the need to accurately describe the surrounding objects to estimate the shading effects by means of the usual tools that use the spatial reconstruction of obstructions or cylindrical or polar suncharts. The photographs of the surrounding objects are used as the background on which the solar disc is depicted at the various hours of the day. A photographic method to estimate the shading effect of obstructions

Abstract A new, simplified photographic method is proposed to estimate the shading effects of obstructions. In spite of the complex mathematical background of the new tool, its practical application is very simple, and only requires the measurements of three angles for each photograph. The proposed method is particularly useful for overcoming the difficulties caused by the need to accurately describe surrounding objects to estimate shading effects.
