Observation and applications of single-electron charge signals in the XENON100 experiment

The XENON100 dark matter experiment uses liquid xenon in a time projection chamber (TPC) to measure xenon nuclear recoils resulting from the scattering of dark matter Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). In this paper, we report the observation of single-electron charge signals which are not related to WIMP interactions. These signals, which show the excellent sensitivity of the detector to small charge signals, are explained as being due to the photoionization of impurities in the liquid xenon and of the metal components inside the TPC. A combined theoretical and experimental determination of the electronic spectrum of acetone

A combined ab initio and experimental investigation has been performed of the main features of the electronic spectrum of acetone. Vertical transition energies have been calculated from the ground to the ny→π∗, π→π∗, σ→π∗, and the n=3 Rydberg states. In addition, the 1A1 energy surfaces have been studied as functions of the CO bond length. The 1A1 3p and 3d states were found to be heavily perturbed by the π→π∗ state. Resonant multiphoton ionization and polarization‐selected photoacoustic spectra of acetone have been measured and observed transitions were assigned on internal criteria. Photoionization of metal clusters.

The photoionization cross section of metal clusters is studied using simple theoretical models. In the case of small clusters, the plasmon is well below the photoionization threshold and the photoionization is dominated by simple independent-particle processes: One electron absorbs all the energy of the photon and immediately leaves the cluster. For large sodium clusters the photoionization efficiency curve is a result of a two-step process: First, the photon excites a plasmon and then the plasmon decays, either by emitting a photoelectron or by heating the cluster. Resonance lonization mass spectroscopy with a pulsed thermal atomic beam

Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) and pulsed-laser induced desorption (PLID) have been combined for ultrasensitive detection and spectroscopy of very small samples of refractive elements. The method has been tested and applied to laser spectroscopy of 5×109 atoms (1.5 pg) of195Au (T1/2= 183d) implanted at the ISOLDE online mass separator with 60 keV into graphite. A pulsed thermal atomic beam was formed by laser desorption with a 10 ns Nd∶Yag laser pulse. Resonant ionization spectroscopy of autoionizing Rydberg states in cobalt and redetermination of its ionization potential

Multi-step resonance ionization spectroscopy of cobalt has been performed using a hot-cavity laser ion source and three Ti:Sapphire lasers. The photoionization spectra revealed members of five new autoionizing Rydberg series that originate from three different lower levels of 3d74s5s h4F9/2, 3d74s4d f4G11/2, and 3d74s4d f4H13/2 and converge to the first four excited states of singly ionized Co. The analyses of the Rydberg series yield 63564.689 �� 0.036 cm-1 as the first ionization potential of Co, which is an order of magnitude more accurate than the previous estimation. Ionization potential of Al6 and Al7 as a function of temperature

The temperature-depence of the ionization potential of Al6 and Al7 clusters is studied by using ab initio molecular dynamics. The threshold regions of theoretical photoionization efficiency curves are obtained from the calculated ionization potential distributions by integration and the determined ionization potentials are compared with the experimental ones. Two important effects, which complicate the determination of ionization potential from photoionization efficiency curves, are observed: the thermal tail effect and the isomerization. The general expression for the transition amplitude of two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen

Two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen with an excess photon is revisited. The non-relativistic dipole approximation and Coulomb Green function (CGF) formalism are applied. Using the CGF Sturmian expansion straightforwardly, one gets the radial transition amplitude in the form of an infinite sum over Gauss hypergeometric functions which are polynomials. It is convergent if all intermediate states are in the discrete spectrum. In the case of two-photon ionization with an excess photon, when photoionization is also possible, intermediate states are in the continuum. Multiphoton-ionization transition amplitudes and the Keldysh approximation.

The Keldysh approximation to treat the multiphoton ionization of atoms is reconsidered. It is shown that, if one consistently uses the hypothesis under which the approximation should be valid (essentially, that of a weak, short-range binding potential), a Keldysh-like term results as an approximation to the first term of a uniformly convergent series in powers of the binding potential. No cancellation occurs when higher-order terms are taken into account. This result allows one to consider the Keldysh approximation as a well-defined theoretical model, without implying, however, that it is adequate to describe multiphoton ionization of real atoms.

The Zoo of emission lines in the spectrum of Cir X-1 observed by XMM-Newton

We present the preliminary analysis of a 10 ks XMM-Newton EPIC/pn observation of Cir X-1 immediately after the zero phase. The continuum emission is modeled using a blackbody component partially absorbed by neutral matter probably located around the binary system. We detect a forest of emission lines associated to highly ionized ions.

Stellar X-ray heating of planet atmospheres

Aims. To investigate the effects of the stellar X-ray irradiation on planet atmospheres, we study the X-ray transfer and energy deposition in a hydrogen rich gas. Methods. We construct an accurate X-ray transfer model taking both photoionization and Compton scattering into account; the electron energy deposition is followed by tracking the discrete exchange processes between electrons and the gas mixture. Results. Exospheric heating rates are derived as functions of the pressure in model atmospheres using a wide range of X-ray luminosity, spectral hardness representative of different stellar ages, and distances from the parent star.
