Efficient three-step, two-color ionization of plutonium using a resonance enhanced 2-photon transition into an autoionizing state

2004

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) has proven to be a powerful method for isotope selective ultra-trace analysis of long-lived radioisotopes. For plutonium detection limits of $\rm 10^{6}$ to $\rm 10^{7}$ atoms have been achieved for various types of samples. So far a three-step, three-color laser excitation scheme was applied for efficient ionization. In this work, a two-photon transition from an excited state into a high-lying autoionizing state, will be presented, yielding a similar overall efficiency as the three-step, three-color ionization scheme. In this way, only two tunable lasers are needed, while the advantages of a three-step, three-color excitation (high selectivity,…

Collisional and thermal ionization of sodium Rydberg atoms I. Experiment for nS and nD atoms with n=8-20

2005

Collisional and thermal ionization of sodium nS and nD Rydberg atoms with n=8-20 has been studied. The experiments were performed using a two-step pulsed laser excitation in an effusive atomic beam at atom density of about 2 10^{10} cm^{-3}. Molecular and atomic ions from associative, Penning, and thermal ionization processes were detected. It has been found that the atomic ions were created mainly due to photoionization of Rydberg atoms by photons of blackbody radiation at the ambient temperature of 300K. Blackbody ionization rates and effective lifetimes of Rydberg states of interest were determined. The molecular ions were found to be from associative ionization in Na(nL)+Na(3S) collisio…

Photoionization of Oriented Systems and Circular Dichroism

1996

Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a modification of normal absorption spectroscopy using circularly polarized light instead of unpolarized light for determining the difference in the absorption coefficients for right and left circularly polarized light, respectively, in optically active samples. Thus, there is nothing mysterious about CD spectroscopy. However, relative to most other spectroscopic techniques there seems to be a large psychological barrier in its application and at least physicists often regard CD, and optical activity in general, as a rather obscure technique without any useful application. There are some understandable reasons for this attitude, manifesting themselves…

Dual Hg-Rb magneto-optical trap

2017

We present a two-species laser cooling apparatus capable of simultaneously collecting Rb and Hg atomic gases into a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The atomic sources, laser system, and vacuum set-up are described. While there is a loss of Rb atoms in the MOT due to photoionization by the Hg cooling laser, we show that it does not prevent simultaneous trapping of Rb and Hg. We also demonstrate interspecies collision-induced losses in the ${}^{87}$Rb-${}^{202}$Hg system.

Microlensing of Quasar Broad Emission Lines: Constraints on Broad Line Region Size

2012

We measure the differential microlensing of the broad emission lines between 18 quasar image pairs in 16 gravitational lenses. We find that high ionization lines such as CIV are more strongly microlensed than low ionization lines, indicating that the high ionization line emission regions are more compact. If we statistically model the distribution of microlensing magnifications, we obtain estimates for the broad line region radius of 24 (-15/+22) and 55 (-35/+150) light-days (90% confidence) for the high and low ionization lines, respectively. When the sample is divided attending to quasar luminosity, we find that the line emission regions of more luminous quasars are larger, with a slope c…

Theory of bound polarons in oxide compounds

2001

We present a multilateral theoretical study of bound polarons in oxide compounds MgO and \alpha-Al_2O_3 (corundum). A continuum theory at arbitrary electron-phonon coupling is used for calculation of the energies of thermal dissociation, photoionization (optically induced release of an electron (hole) from the ground self-consistent state), as well as optical absorption to the non-relaxed excited states. Unlike the case of free strong-coupling polarons, where the ratio \kappa of the photoionization energy to the thermal dissociation energy was shown to be always equal to 3, here this ratio depends on the Froehlich coupling constant \alpha and the screened Coulomb interaction strength \beta.…

Electron energy distribution in the photodetachment ofH−by two radiation fields

1993

We report on the energy distribution of the electrons emitted in two-color photodetachment of ${\mathrm{H}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ in a highly nonlinear regime, and compare these results with the ones found by averaging the cross section obtained in the presence of a static field over the values taken by the low-frequency field in a cycle. Similarities and differences are discussed.

Phototransition of Na(3p3/2) into high Rydberg states and the ionization continuum

2005

A model potential method is used to investigate photoabsorption from the Na(3p3/2) state. Absorption cross sections into higher Rydberg states and photoionization cross sections are presented as an analytical function of photo electron energy. Einstein coefficients for spontaneous emissions 3p3/2 ← ns1/2, nd5/2, nd3/2 are tabulated for n up to 50. The Einstein coefficients and low-energy ionization cross sections are believed to be accurate to better than 2–3%, above 1 eV the error may increase to 4–6%.

AC-Stark shift and photoionization of Rydberg atoms in an optical dipole trap

2010

We have measured the AC-Stark shift of the $14D_{5/2}$ Rydberg state of rubidium 87 in an optical dipole trap formed by a focussed CO$_2$-laser. We find good quantitative agreement with the model of a free electron experiencing a ponderomotive potential in the light field. In order to reproduce the observed spectra we take into account the broadening of the Rydberg state due to photoionization. The extracted cross-section is compatible with previous measurements on neighboring Rydberg states.
