Mission: Impossible (Escape from the Lyman Limit)

We investigate the intrinsic opacity of high-redshift galaxies to outgoing ionising photons using high-quality photometry of a sample of 27 spectroscopically-identified galaxies of redshift 1.9<z<3.5 in the Hubble Deep Field. Our measurement is based on maximum-likelihood fitting of model galaxy spectral energy distributions-including the effects of intrinsic Lyman-limit absorption and random realizations of intervening Lyman-series and Lyman-limit absorption-to photometry of galaxies from space- and ground-based broad-band images. New JHK Photometry of LS I +61 303

AbstractWe present new JHK photometry of the Be/X-ray binary L SI +61 303, obtained during the period 1994-1998. The IR light curves do not show the modulation with the orbital period apparently present in the smaller photometry set analyzed by Paredes et al. (1994).The reddening-corrected standard photometric values indicate that the circumstellar envelope is optically thick at infrared wavelengths, and much denser than those of isolated Be stars. It is argued that this higher density is produced by disk truncation due to the presence of the compact object in a close orbit.

Near-IR photometry of southern X-ray binary systems

We report IR measurements of 30 optical counterparts to a group of possible and probable High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXRBs). In the majority of the systems these measurements represent the rst reported IR flux values. In common with many other similar sys- tems, the results show the presence of a strong, frequently variable IR signal. The implications of some of the results are discussed.

The size of AB Doradus A from VLTI/AMBER interferometry

The pre-main sequence (PMS) star ABDorA is the main component of the quadruple system ABDoradus. The precise determination of the mass and photometry of the close companion to ABDorA, ABDorC, has provided an important benchmark for calibration of theoretical evolutionary models of low-mass stars. The limiting factor to the precision of this calibration is the age of the system, as both the mass and luminosity of ABDorA and C are well monitored by other ongoing programs. In this paper we present VLTI/AMBER observations of ABDorA which provide a direct measurement of the size of this star, 0.96+/-0.06 Rsun. CCDuvbyβ photometry of the young open cluster NGC 663

2004

NGC 663 is a young, moderately rich open cluster, known to contain one of the largest fractions of Be stars among all galactic clusters. In this work we present CCD uvby-beta photometry for stars in its central area. We have used these data to obtain the main cluster physical parameters. We find that the reddening is highly variable, with values ranging from E(b-y)=0.639+/-0.032 in the central part to E(b-y)=0.555+/-0.038 in the south-east. The distance modulus is found to be 11.6+/-0.1 mag.(2.1 Kpc), and the age log t=7.4+/-0.1 years (25+7/-5 Myr). The age obtained is consistent with the interpretation of the Be phenomenon as an evolutionary effect.

Four colour photometry of late-type binary systems

This paper presents new complete uvby light curves of the late-type detached eclipsing binary BH Vir (G0V + G5V, P =0 : 81687099). This binary system has been observed during four cam- paigns at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria, Spain) and at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Chile). Photon Pressure Force on Space Debris TOPEX/Poseidon Measured by Satellite Laser Ranging

The TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) altimetry mission operated for 13 years before the satellite was decommissioned in January 2006, becoming a large space debris object at an altitude of 1,340 km. Since the end of the mission, the interaction of T/P with the space environment has driven the satellite's spin dynamics. Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) measurements collected from June 2014 until October 2016 allow for the satellite spin axis orientation to be determined with an accuracy of 1.7°. The spin axis coincides with the platform yaw axis (formerly pointing in the nadir direction) about which the body rotates in a counterclockwise direction. On the radio emitting high mass X-ray binary LS 5039

We present new optical - near-IR spectroscopic and photometric observations of the newly discovered galactic microquasar LS 5039, which indicate a classification for the mass donor in the system of O6.5V((f)). Optical spectroscopy and photometry shows no variability over a timescale of years, and we find no evidence of modulation by, or emission from the compact companion in these data. However significant photometric variability (~0.4 mag) is present in the H and K bands between 1995-2000. Such variability has been observed in other radio bright X-ray binaries where it has been attributed to synchrotron emission from the jet. SphinX: A fast solar Photometer in X-rays

The scientific goals and construction details of a new design, Polish X-ray spectrophotometer are given. It will be incorporated within the Russian TESIS X and EUV complex aboard the forthcoming CORO-NAS solar mission. SphinX (Solar Photometer in X-rays) will use PIN silicon detectors for high time resolution (0.01 s) measurements of the solar spectra of quiet and active corona in the range 0.5–15 keV. A new filter-fluorescence target concept will be employed to allow for a fast photometry of the solar X-ray flux variations in selected, well defined narrow spectral bands including the Fe XXVI and Fe XXV iron line groups.
