Nanoassembled plasmonic-photonic hybrid cavity for tailored light-matter coupling.
2010
We propose and demonstrate a hybrid cavity system in which metal nanoparticles are evanescently coupled to a dielectric photonic crystal cavity using a nanoassembly method. While the metal constituents lead to strongly localized fields, optical feedback is provided by the surrounding photonic crystal structure. The combined effect of plasmonic field enhancement and high quality factor (Q approximately 900) opens new routes for the control of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale.
Vortex solitons in photonic crystal fibers
2003
We demonstrate the existence of vortex soliton solutions in photonic crystal fibers. We analyze the role played by the photonic crystal fiber defect in the generation of optical vortices. An analytical prediction for the angular dependence of the amplitude and phase of the vortex solution based on group theory is also provided. Furthermore, all the analysis is performed in the non-paraxial regime.
Role of dispersion on zero-average-index bandgaps
2009
We consider periodic multilayers combining ordinary positive index materials and dispersive metamaterials with negative index in some frequency ranges. These structures can exhibit photonic bandgaps which, in contrast with the usual Bragg gaps, are not based on interference mechanisms. Changing the dispersion models for the constituent metamaterial, we investigate its role in the production of zero-average-index bandgaps. In particular, we show the effect of each constitutive parameter on both bandgap edges. Finally, we give some approximated analytical expressions in terms of average parameters for the determination of the upper and lower limits of the zero-average refractive-index bandgap…
Coherent control of stimulated emission inside one-dimensional photonic crystals
2004
In this paper, the quasinormal mode (QNM) theory is applied to discuss the quantum problem of an atom embedded inside a one-dimensional (1D) photonic band gap (PBG) cavity pumped by two counterpropagating laser beams. The e.m. field is quantized in terms of the QNMs in the 1D PBG and the atom modeled as a two-level system is assumed to be weakly coupled to just one of the QNMs. The main result of the paper is that the decay time depends on the position of the dipole inside the cavity, and can be controlled by the phase difference of the two laser beams.
m-bonacci metamaterial multilayers: location of the zero-average index bandgap edges
2009
We examine quasiperiodic multilayers arranged in m-bonacci sequences, which combine ordinary positiveindex materials and dispersive metamaterials with negative index in a certain frequency range. When the volume-averaged refractive index of the nonperiodic multilayer equals zero, the structure does not propagate light radiation and exhibits a forbidden band. We identify some analytical expressions to determine the upper and lower limits of the above zero-average refractive-index bandgap. We recognize that these limits are not explicitly dependent on the geometrical parameters of the stack of layers. © 2009 Optical Society of America. Fil: Monsoriu, J.A.. Vorticity cutoff in nonlinear photonic crystals
2005
Using group theory arguments, we demonstrate that, unlike in homogeneous media, no symmetric vortices of arbitrary order can be generated in two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear systems possessing a discrete-point symmetry. The only condition needed is that the non-linearity term exclusively depends on the modulus of the field. In the particular case of 2D periodic systems, such as nonlinear photonic crystals or Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials, it is shown that the realization of discrete symmetry forbids the existence of symmetric vortex solutions with vorticity higher than two.
Spatial Solitons in Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Fibers
2017
This chapter aims to review the most relevant results on solitons in nonlinear solid-core photonic crystal fibers since their introduction about fifteen years ago. These include fundamental solitons and vortices, as well as vector systems of two fundamental, vortex or mixed components. Also other related systems as solitons in double-core photonic crystal fibers will be reviewed. The presentation will describe the mode families as well as their stability properties. The work is intended to be a comprehensive document on the field and provide a fast update to the reader as well as the necessary sources for a further detailed documentation.
Modeling of photonic crystal fibers from the scalar wave equation with a purely transverse linearly polarized vector potential
2011
In this work, we propose a new technique for modeling light propagation in photonic crystal fibers where the electric field is evaluated from a purely transverse linearly polarized vector potential. The vector potential in a nonuniform dielectric obeys a wave equation coupled to the scalar potential, but it can be reduced to a scalar wave equation when the coupling term is ignored to the lowest order approximation. We show that this method gives reliable results for photonic crystal fibers when the scalar analysis is improved by a perturbational correction.
Vector description of higher-order modes in photonic crystal fibers
2000
We extensively study the propagation features of higher-order modes in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Our analysis is based on a full-vector modal technique specially adapted to accurately describe light propagation in PCF's. Unlike conventional fibers, PCF's exhibit a somewhat unusual mechanism for the generation of higher-order modes. Accordingly, PCF's are characterized by the constancy of the number of modes below a wavelength threshold. An explicit verification of this property is given through a complete analysis of the dispersion relations of higher-order modes in terms of the structural parameters of this kind of fiber. The transverse irradiance distributions for some of these high…
Spatial Soliton Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Quadratic Photonic Crystals
2007
We present a theoretical and experimental investigation of soliton dynamics associated to twin-beam second harmonic generation in a purely nonlinear two-dimensional planar photonic lattice in LiNbO3.
