Refinement of a structural model of a pigment-protein complex by accurate optical line shape theory and experiments.
2007
Time-local and time-nonlocal theories are used in combination with optical spectroscopy to characterize the water-soluble chlorophyll binding protein complex (WSCP) from cauliflower. The recombinant cauliflower WSCP complexes reconstituted with either chlorophyll b (Chl b) or Chl a/Chl b mixtures are characterized by absorption spectroscopy at 77 and 298 K and circular dichroism at 298 K. On the basis of the analysis of these spectra and spectra reported for recombinant WSCP reconstituted with Chl a only (Hughes, J. L.; Razeghifard, R.; Logue, M.; Oakley, A.; Wydrzynski, T.; Krausz, E. J. Am. Chem. Soc. U.S.A. 2006, 128, 3649), the "open-sandwich" model proposed for the structure of the pig…

Long-period grating assisted fractional differentiation of highly chirped light pulses
2016
We experimentally demonstrate the possibility to perform a fractional differentiation of arbitrary order on a given light pulse by propagation through a single long-period grating. A simple analytical expression is obtained also, relating the fractional order of differentiation with the parameters of the long-period grating. A secant hyperbolic like pulse of 23 ps time width with a chirp parameter of -30 was successfully fractionally differentiated to the 0.5th order. The proposal was corroborated experimentally and numerically. The device may find applications in real time phase recovery. Fil: Poveda Wong, L.. Universidad de Valencia; España Fil: Carrascosa, A.. <title>Photonic vascular diagnostics by four-channel photoplethysmography</title>
2005
A four-channel photoplethysmography device was designed and built at University of Latvia to detect signals from different body parts and to analyze the signal shapes. The device consists of optical contact probes, interface, and a standard PC. Clinical tests were performed with occlusion patients having vascular problems at arm or leg arteries. Results showed significant difference in the pulse wave transit time in occluded and nonoccluded part of the body.© (2005) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Compensation of the impact of low-cost manufacturing techniques in the design of E-plane multiport waveguide junctions
2016
In this work, a full-wave tool for the accurate analysis and design of compensated E-plane multiport junctions is proposed. The implemented tool is capable of evaluating the undesired effects related to the use of low-cost manufacturing techniques, which are mostly due to the introduction of rounded corners in the cross section of the rectangular waveguides of the device. The obtained results show that, although stringent mechanical effects are imposed, it is possible to compensate for the impact of the cited low-cost manufacturing techniques by redesigning the matching elements considered in the original device. Several new designs concerning a great variety of E-plane components (such as …
Nonlinear Pulse Shaping in Optical Fibres with a Neural Network
2020
We use a supervised machine-learning model based on a neural network to solve the direct and inverse problems relating to the shaping of optical pulses that occurs upon nonlinear propagation in optical fibres.
Robustness of 40 Gb/s ASK modulation formats in the practical system infrastructure.
2006
In this work, we analyzed by means of numerical and laboratory experiments the resilience of 40 Gb/s amplitude shift keying modulation formats to transmission impairments in standard single-mode fiber lines as well as to optical filtering introduced by the optical add/drop multiplexer cascade. Our study is a pre-requisite to assess the implementation of cost-effective 40 Gb/s modulation technology in next generation high bit-rate robust optical transport networks. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
Multi-level optimization of a fiber transmission system via nonlinearity management
2006
Nonlinearity management is explored as a complete tool to obtain maximum transmission reach in a WDM fiber transmission system, making it possible to optimize multiple system parameters, including optimal dispersion pre-compensation, with fast simulations based on the continuous-wave approximation. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
An Optical Remote Sensor for Fingerprint Identification using Speckle Pattern
2017
The implementation of a simple, inexpensive optical device for remote fingerprint identification is presented. The sensor is based on temporal tracking of back-reflected secondary speckle patterns generated while illuminating a finger with a laser.
