Characterization of the LGBTI-speaking community discourse. An approach to Hispanic queer linguistics.
2020

Target frames in British hotel websites
2015
This article centres on four-word phrase frames in British hospitality websites. Our aim is to identify those frames that are specific to this website genre, which we call target frames. Each phrase frame represents an identical sequence of words except for one variable word, that is A*BC or AB*D. The words that fill the slot, marked with an asterisk, are called fillers. We used a corpus-driven approach using KfNgram software to identify the phrase frames in our corpus (COMETVAL). We regard phrase frames as genre-specific when they are significantly more frequent than those found in the written section of the BNC, which represents General British English. We further filtered our selection o…
Definiteness Marking Shows Late Effects during Discourse Processing: Evidence from ERPs
2009
This paper investigates the processing of indefinite and definite noun phrases in discourse. It presents data from an Event-Related brain Potential (ERP) study that contrasted definite and indefinite noun phrases following three distinct context sentences. The data suggest that coherence considerations influence early processing stages, while morphological definiteness features only affect later stages during reference resolution. In addition, the processing of a definite determiner (prior to encountering the subsequent noun) exerts processing demands, supporting the functional contribution of definiteness marking. Supplementary data from a plausibility questionnaire and two completion stud…

Activities using blackboard, pens and paper

Dictogloss Language Listening comprehension Level Elementary upwards Age Any This is a well established dictation-based activity which helps to develop conscious listening skills in addition to an awareness of phrase and sentence structures. Procedure Choose a sentence suitable for the level of the class. This might be a sentence from a coursebook, but if so, make sure it is one which is not yet familiar to your students. An example sentence is given below. Tell the class that you will read this sentence to them once only. They should write down the key words as you read. You should not have to repeat the sentence, but with a large class you might like to read it once at the front of the ro…
Continuity and discontinuity in the semantics of the Latin preposition per: a cognitive hypothesis
2011
Abstract We propose a description of the semantic network of the Latin prepositional phrase per ‘through’ + Accusative in the early stage of this language. Drawing upon the insights of Cognitive Grammar, we analyze the role of the schematic import in the spread from basic to abstract meanings. Finally, we draw a map of the polysemous network of per, showing that the continuity of the different, but consistently linked, meanings does not necessarily imply the unidirectionality of the concrete-to-abstract shifts.
English as a lingua franca – a native-culture-free code? Language of communication vs. language of identification
2011
English has become the dominant means of international communication. Its non-native speakers now far outnumber the conventional native speakers in the UK, the USA, Canada etc. Against this background, a number of authors have recently stressed the functions for which foreign languages are learned. They make a distinction between a ‘language of communication’ and a ‘language of identification’. The terms, which were coined by the German applied linguist Werner Hüllen (1992), have recently been popularised in the context of English as a lingua franca. English, it is said, can be used as a language of communication without necessarily being a language of identification. As it is used for prac…
The objective of this paper is to offer an analysis of the morphology of the kind of idiomatic words that we c…
"Por si las flais, ni flowers y en off": morphology of loanwords from english as idiomatic words in spanish idioms.
2020
