The aminophosphonate glyphosine enhances phycobiliprotein yields from selected cyanobacterial cultures

2017

Among added-value products obtained from cyanobacterial cultures are phycobiliproteins, photosynthetic pigments that have found an increasing number of applications as natural dyes for food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and antioxidants. To obtain sustainable production, we aimed at maximizing phycobilin yield through the increase of either the final biomass or the specific content of these pigments by varying culture parameters, such as chemical composition and pH of the medium or quality and intensity of the light. Here, we report that the addition to the culture medium of millimolar or submillimolar concentrations of the aminophosphonate glyphosine [(N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine], form…

Phycocyanobilin in solution – a solvent triggered molecular switch

2014

We present a computational investigation of the conformational response of phycocyanobilin (PCB) to the ability of solvents to form hydrogen bonds. PCB is the chromophore of several proteins in light harvesting complexes. We determine the conformational distributions in different solvents (methanol and hexamethylphosphoramide HMPT) by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and characterize them via ab initio calculations of NMR chemical shift patterns. The computed trajectories and spectroscopic fingerprints illustrate that the energy landscape is very complex and exhibits various conformations of similar energy. We elucidate the strong influence of the solvent characteristics on…

Photosynthesis of the red alga Gracilaria chilensis under natural solar radiation in an estuary in southern Chile

2005

The photosynthetic performance and pigment content of Gracilaria chilensis Bird, McLachlan, and Oliveira were measured under natural solar radiation in the Quempillen river estuary (southern Chile) in order to assess the short-term acclimation of this species to the current levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation during midsummer. The effect of the tidal fluctuation was evaluated in algae exposed for 3 days to two light climates in cages suspended at two depths (0.5 and 1.5 m from the bottom). Responses to high solar radiation at noon were also assessed to gain insights into rapid photochemical kinetics and the degree of photoinhibition. Results indicated that G. chilensis is a shade-adapted s…
