Testing a physical education-delivered autonomy supportive intervention to promote leisure-time physical activity in lower secondary school students:…
2020
© 2020 The Author(s). Background: Inadequate physical activity in young people is associated with several physical and mental health concerns. Physical education (PE) is a potentially viable existing network for promoting physical activity in this population. However, little research has been conducted on whether PE teachers can influence students' engagement in leisure-time physical activity. The present study therefore examined the efficacy of an intervention aimed at increasing PE teachers' autonomy support on students' leisure-time physical activity (the PETALS trial). The intervention was guided by the trans-contextual model (TCM) explaining the processes by which PE teachers' provisio…
Effects of physical activity on postural balance in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: results from a pilot study
2017
Background: The juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the main rheumatic disease in pediatric age. The rheumatic diseases are main causes of physical disability and have high economic costs for society. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the physical activity can prevent the decline in balance related diseases in children with previous diagnosis of JIA. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six subjects were enrolled in this study. Thirty-nine healthy subjects were included in the control group (CG) and seventeen in juvenile idiopathic arthritis group (JIAG). Subsequently, the JIAG was stratified in two ones, respectively: JIAG active (JIAG-ACT) and JIAG sedentary (JIAG-SED). The analysis was…

Leisure-time physical activity, body mass index, and waist circumreference : a longitudinal twin study from adolescence to adulthood
2010
ABSTRACT LEISURE-TIME PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, BODY MASS INDEX, AND WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE: A LONGITUDINAL TWIN STUDY FROM ADOLESCENCE TO ADULTHOOD Minna Kujala Master’s Thesis of Sport Medicine The University of Jyväskylä The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences Department of Health Sciences 2010 Pages: 54, 8 appendixes The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of persistence and changes in the frequency of leisure- time physical activity on body mass index and waist circumference from adolescence to adulthood. Also, this study investigates the effect of the intensity of physical activity on body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference in adulthood. Participants in the study, members of…
FinnTwin16 : A Longitudinal Study from Age 16 of a Population-Based Finnish Twin Cohort
2019
The purpose of this review is to provide a detailed and updated description of the FinnTwin16 (FT16) study and its future directions. The Finnish Twin Cohort comprises three different cohorts: the Older Twin Cohort established in the 1970s and the FinnTwin12 and FT16 initiated in the 1990s. FT16 was initiated in 1991 to identify the genetic and environmental precursors of alcoholism, but later the scope of the project expanded to studying the determinants of various health-related behaviors and diseases in different stages of life. The main areas addressed are alcohol use and its consequences, smoking, physical activity, overall physical health, eating behaviors and eating disorders, weight…

Knowledge discovery from physical activity
2017
Effects of two-week high intensity interval training on cognition in adolescents : randomized controlled pilot study
2017
Purpose. We investigated the effects of a two-week high-intensity interval training (HIT) on cognition in adolescents. Methods. The participants were recruited from local high schools with an electronic messaging system. The HIT group participated in 4 high-intensity interval running sessions and 2 circuit training sessions. The control group (CG) continued their usual habits. Reaction time, choose reaction time, working memory, visual memory, and learning were assessed by computerized CogState test battery. The intervention effect was investigated with repeated measures ANOVA and the effect size by Morris dppc2. Results. The total of 25 participants aged 17–20 years participated in the bas…
Perceived sufficiency of physical activity levels among adults at high risk of type 2 diabetes. The FIN-D2D study
2012
Purpose. This study assessed the determinants of perceived physical activity levels (PALs) among adults at high risk of diabetes, and the associations with self-reported physical activity. Methods. In total, 10,149 adults participated in the FIN-D2D lifestyle intervention at baseline. Opportunistic screening was used in identifying high risk individuals. Physical activity and perceived PAL sufficiency were assessed and compared. Key risk factors for diabetes and psychosocial and demographic characteristics were analyzed as determinants using logistic regression. Results. PAL sufficiency was rated realistically by 73% of men and 75% of women. Perception of sufficient PAL was more likely amon…
Physical activity as a predictor of disability and social and health service use in older people
2009
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether functional status and physical activity history predict all-cause hospital and long-term care use among older community-dwelling people. In addition, the effects of physical activity counseling on instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and home care service use in an older sedentary population were studied.Data from three larger studies were used. The Evergreen project cohorts born in 1910 and 1914 consisted of 617 persons. From the Evergreen project interview data on individuals born in 1908-1923, a decedent population was investigated (n=846). Screening and Counseling for Physical Activity and Mobility among Older Peop…
