Oral mucosal lesions and their association with tobacco use and qat chewing among Yemeni dental patients.

2014

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) in patients attending outpa - tient dental clinics in Sana`a university, Yemen, and to evaluate the association of such lesions with age, gender, and oral habits. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 409 subjects (272 males, 137 females, age: 15-86 years). Detailed clinical examination was performed in accordance with international criteria. Patient history in - cluded age, gender, education, denture wearing and risk habits (tobacco use and qat chewing). Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.00. Results: The prevalence of OMLs was 58.4% with a significant difference between men (63.6%) and …

Farbduplexsonographische Messung der Lymphknotenperfusion: Ein Beitrag zur Diagnostik der zervikalen Metastasierung*

1993

The objective of this study was to find additional sonomorphological criteria for determining the status of enlarged lymph nodes. By using colour-coded duplex sonography the perfusion of 63 lymph nodes in the neck was analysed. The status was confirmed either histologically or clinically (29 metastases from squamous cell carcinomas and 34 acute or chronic inflammatory nodal diseases). A quantitative evaluation of the pulsatility measured in 51 lymph nodes by computing the Pourcelot-Ratio and the Mean Pulsatility Index yielded significant differences between the two groups. By definition of a limiting value of the Pourcelot-Ratio (0.75) for the prediction of benignity, the specificity and th…

US7 Oral mucosal ulcerations

2006

Oral mucosal ulcer represents a localized loss of the lining epithelium and sometimes also of the subjacent connective tissue. It could be persistent or recurrent and also single or multiple. As regards those persistent a large variety of etiologic factors have been suggested: this kind of ulcers could be a sign of a localised direct reaction to any physical/chemical injury or due to a drug-related reaction (e.g. by chemotherapy). Mucosal ulceration could also occur in a multiplicity of diseases such as neoplasia, infection, immune-mediated disease or as sign of systemic diseases (e.g. of blood, skin or gastrointestinal tract). A correct diagnosis needs to collect as carefully as possible s…

Osteoporosis in men: a case report

2010

Osteoporosis in men is frequently not considered, underdiagnosed and often undertreated. In contrast with osteoporosis occurring in women, the genesis is frequently secondary (30-60%) with a complex diagnostic approach. A careful anamnesis and physical examination associated with laboratory and instrumental evaluation are necessary for an accurate diagnosis. The clinical case presented concerns a 70-year-old man with negative family history for osteoporosis and a personal history of depression, HBV carrier, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a heavy ex-smoker with history of alcoholism. The comprehensive geriatric evaluation allowed us to diagnose a multifactorially seconda…

Neuroblastoma in Europe: differences in the pattern of disease in the UK

1998

Summary Background Neuroblastoma is a major contributor to childhood cancer mortality, but its prognosis varies with age and stage of disease, and some tumours regress spontaneously. Urinary screening programmes or clinical examination may detect the disease before symptoms appear, but the benefit of early diagnosis is uncertain. We examined the incidence, pattern, and presentation of neuroblastoma in four European countries. Methods Population-based incidence rates were derived for France, Austria, Germany, and the UK. Age, sex, and stage distribution were analysed by Mantel-Haenszel techniques and Poisson regression. The proportion of incidental diagnoses (cases without symptoms found at …

Cancer of the Penis

2021

Penile carcinoma is a rare and aggressive disease. Its incidence is related with age over 60 and presence of comorbidities such as HPV infection. The higher incidence rate is reached in developing countries. Penile carcinoma is generally a squamous cell carcinoma and it is frequently foregone by a premalignant lesion. Because of its short time to progression, an early detection is mandatory. Good physical examination is the first step toward a correct diagnosis and staging. CT scan and chest X-ray are useful for nodal stage while US and MRI can provide a preoperative assessment of local invasion. Surgical approach depends on invasion and nodal involvement, varying from a local laser ablatio…

Endovascular management of a giant symptomatic gluteal artery aneurysm with selective arterial embolization

2017

A 78-year-old female presented to our department with pain and swelling in the left gluteal region. Physical examination revealed a large tender swelling in the left gluteal area simulating an abscess. However, pulsation was observed over the swelling that raised the suspicion of a vascular lesion. Therefore, contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) was done before trying any intervention. The scan demonstrated a large aneurysm originating from the left superior gluteal artery measuring 65 mm × 38 mm with a small intra-pelvic component and large extra-pelvic component in the gluteal area ( Figure 1 ).

Association Between Fatigue and Cognitive Impairment at 6 Months in Patients With Ischemic Stroke Treated With Acute Revascularization Therapy.

2019

Background: Fatigue is a frequent symptom after stroke. We aimed to determine the association between fatigue and cognitive performance in patients with ischemic stroke who received acute revascularization therapy (IV thrombolysis and/or mechanical thrombectomy). Methods: Seventy patients were prospectively included in the stroke unit of the University Hospital of Dijon, France. A follow-up was performed at 6 months with clinical examination, fatigue assessment by the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. Patients with fatigue (FSS score >4) were compared with patients without fatigue. Neuropsychological factors associated with fatigue at 6 month…

Feasibility and diagnostic performance of including point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in preparticipation screening of young competitive athletes

2020

AbstractOptimal pre-participative screening in young athletes is still controversial. We sought to evaluate the strategy of including point-of-care ultrasound to electrocardiogram. In total, 1188 young competitive athletes were screened in different sports institutions. This proved to be a useful strategy by improving diagnostic performance primarily with respect to detect structural abnormalities and also by minimising positive false cases of electrocardiogram alone.

Association between preoperative evaluation with lung ultrasound and outcome in frail elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery for hip fracture…

2021

Abstract Background Hip fracture is one of the most common orthopedic causes of hospital admission in frail elderly patients. Hip fracture fixation in this class of patients is considered a high-risk procedure. Preoperative physical examination, plasma natriuretic peptide levels (BNP, Pro-BNP), and cardiovascular scoring systems (ASA-PS, RCRI, NSQIP-MICA) have all been demonstrated to underestimate the risk of postoperative complications. We designed a prospective multicenter observational study to assess whether preoperative lung ultrasound examination can predict better postoperative events thanks to the additional information they provide in the form of “indirect” and “direct” cardiac an…
