Modeling, simulation and design optimization of a hoisting rig active heave compensation system

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s13042-012-0076-x The objective of this paper is to present an approach in developing a virtual active heave compensation system for a draw-works on a hoisting rig. A virtual system enables quicker overall product development time of a physical system as well as flexibility in optimizing the design parameters. Development of the virtual system started with the modelling of the draw-works and hoisting rig dynamics. Simulations of this model were run in two operational modes while subject to a sinusoidal wave: heave compensa…

DeCyMo: Decentralized Cyber-physical System for Monitoring and Controlling Industries and Homes

2018

The recent revolution of the Internet of Things has given the birth of a series of new technologies and cyber-physical systems to be used in industrial and home scenarios. Cyber- physical systems include physical and software components for providing smart monitoring and control with flexibility and adaptability to the operating context. The IoT paradigm enables the intertwined use of physical and software components through the interconnection of devices that exchange data with each other without direct human interaction in several fields, especially in industrial and home environments. We propose DeCyMo, a decentralized architecture that aims at solving common IoT issues and vulnerabiliti…

New developments in simulation-based harbour crane training

2011

This paper presents the efforts that have been made during the development of a set of harbour training simulators to improve their quality. The paper focuses on two main research lines: the improvement of complex physical systems involved in the simulation and the analysis of hardware architecture solutions. Cable-based hoist systems and bulk materials are systems present in different harbour equipment and are usually simulated with poor quality due to their complexity. In this paper physics-based models for the interactive simulation of these systems are proposed and applied to real cases. Also, different hardware simulator architectures are analysed and different approaches are proposed …

Ethical Issues Invoked by Industry 4.0

2021

Industry 4.0 is universally referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. It is a current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. The computerisation of manufacturing includes, amongst other, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and cognitive computing. There are many challenges in the realisation of Industry 4.0. In order to adopt a “smart factory” and improved (software) processes many ethical considerations need to be identified and considered if a company is to obtain an ethical development and deployment of Industry 4.0. The purpose of normative ethics is to scrutinise standards about the rightness and wrongness of action…

Understanding the dynamics of field theories far from equilibrium

2019

In recent years, there have been important advances in understanding the far-from-equilibrium dynamics in different physical systems. In ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the combination of different methods led to the development of a weak-coupling description of the early-time dynamics. The numerical observation of a classical universal attractor played a crucial role for this. Such attractors, also known as non-thermal fixed points (NTFPs), have been now predicted for different scalar and gauge theories. An important universal NTFP emerges in scalar theories modeling ultra-cold atoms, inflation or dark matter, and its scaling properties have been recently observed in an ultra-cold…

Technical Briefing: Hands-On Session on the Development of Trustworthy AI Software

2021

Following various real-world incidents involving both purely digital and cyber-physical Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, AI Ethics has become a prominent topic of discussion in both research and practice, accompanied by various calls for trustworthy AI systems. Failures are often costly, and many of them stem from issues that could have been avoided during development. For example, AI ethics issues, such as data privacy are currently highly topical. However, implementing AI ethics in practice remains a challenge for organizations. Various guidelines have been published to aid companies in doing so, but these have not seen widespread adoption and may feel impractical. In this technical …

Capturing citizens — Emerging needs: Using social networks in smart cities

2017

In order to reach its objectives, smart cities (or whatever kind of smart urban environment) should be underpinned by complex cyber physical systems (CPS) able to discover needs and services and "smartly" combine them. Services may be thought as services offered by software components, of whatever nature, for instance software, bot, robot, app and so on. Searching for the best service depends on the need of the citizen(s) and also on the type of (smart) environment the citizens are in. Analysis and design of CPSs are more challenging than the only physical or the only cyber system. We propose a design paradigm shift towards runtime for identifying requirements of cyber physical systems for …

Knowledge management in cyberphysical systems: determining the quality requirements for health systems with the Kano model

2018

This paper focuses on knowledge management in cyberphysical systems (CPS), dealing with the importance and influence of smart technologies for the creation of the smart health systems as a part of the smart home. This approach considers the reorganisation and adaptation of medicine and health systems, building the research framework upon knowledge management 4.0 for health systems. Customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction was researched using the qualitative methodology of the Kano model. The questionnaire deals with five factors that play a crucial role in the decision to purchase such a system: 1) software reliability; 2) medical device interoperability; 3) security and privacy; 4) system…

Advances and challenges for experiment and theory for multi-electron multi-proton transfer at electrified solid-liquid interfaces.

2020

Multi-electron, multi-proton transfer is important in a wide spectrum of processes spanning biological, chemical and physical systems. These reactions have attracted significant interest due to both fundamental curiosity and potential applications in energy technology. In this Perspective Review, we shed light on modern aspects of electrode processes in the 21st century, in particular on the recent advances and challenges in multistep electron/proton transfers at solid–liquid interfaces. Ongoing developments of analytical techniques and operando spectrometry at electrode/electrolyte interfaces and reliable computational approaches to simulate complicated interfacial electrochemical reaction…

Phonons of hexagonal BN under pressure: Effects of isotopic composition

2021

Raman scattering experiments on isotopically enriched hexagonal boron nitride have been performed under pressure up to 11 GPa at room temperature. The sublinear increase of the Raman-active E2g mode frequencies has been characterized. The pressure behavior has been analyzed by means of a bond-stiffness–bond-length scaling parameter γ which takes into consideration the vast differences in a- and c-axis compressibilities. The interlayer shear mode exhibits a γ parameter similar to that of graphite, and the mode frequency in isotopically pure samples separates faster at low pressures as a result of van der Waals interactions. Because of the extremely low a-axis compressibility, the intralayer …
