Professionals’ role in implementing a cervical cancer screening program
2014
The objectives of this study were to investigate the awareness, motivation, and readiness of medical staff to take part in a cervi cal cancer screening program (CSP), with the ultimate aim of increasing the response rate to invitation letters and improving CSP effectiveness and coverage. Certified gynecologists (GYNs) and general practitioners (GPs) practicing in the national and private healthcare systems in Latvia were given specially designed multiple-choice questionnaires. Of 213 questionnaires distributed to GYNs, 74% were completed (32% response rate of all 486 GYNs in Latvia). GPs were sent 933 questionnaires, 24% were returned (15% response rate of all 1,455 GPs in Latvia). GPs regi…
The Art of Helpful Relationships with Professionals: A Meta-ethnography of the Perspective of Persons with Severe Mental Illness.
2015
Relationships with professionals have been shown to be helpful to persons with severe mental illness (SMI) in relation to a variety of services. In this article, we aimed to synthesize the available qualitative research to acquire a deepened understanding of what helpful relationships with professionals consists of, from the perspective of persons with SMI. To do this, we created a meta-ethnography of 21 studies, through which ten themes and an overarching interpretation were created. The findings show that helpful relationships with professionals are relationships where the persons with SMI get to spend time with professionals that they know and trust, who gives them access to resources, s…
Influence of the Geriatric Oncology Consultation On the Final Therapeutic Decision In Elderly Subjects With Cancer: Analysis of 191 Patients
2014
International audience; Objectives: evaluate the impact of the Geriatric Oncology consultation on the final therapeutic management of cancer in elderly patients aged 70 and older. Design: retrospective study. Setting: the Pilot coordination unit in Geriatric Oncology of Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France. Participants: From January 2010 to December 2010, 191 patients with cancer aged 70 and older. Measurements: the concordance between the treatments proposed following the tumor Board, those proposed following the Geriatric evaluation (GE) and those actually given to the patients was evaluated using the kappa agreement test. Results: One hundred and ninety-one patients were included. Mean age was 8…

Impact of Distressing Media Imagery on Children
2016
Children are particularly fragile and vulnerable to the impact of traumatic events or their mediated representation because they lack the skills and experience in the management of difficult information. Children have different concepts of health and disaster than adults and institutions, depending mainly on their cognitive, emotional, social, psychological, and physical development. If left alone with threatening messages, children are less able to fully understand the information to which they had been exposed. Therefore, they may fail to integrate the external data into their psychological schema of coping strategies. Children usually count on caregivers to deal with stressors, and they …
[The role of the anesthesiologist in secondary hyperparathyroidism].
2010
In the last years the increasing of diabetes and hypertension has produced a considerable increase of patients with chronic renal failure; secondary hyperparathyroidism is one of the major complications. The resection of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue is the ultimate goal of the treatment. The preoperative examination by the anesthetist is the starting-point of the treatment. The anesthetist programs hemodialysis, the correction of fluid and electrolyte abnormalities and of the anaemia. In the operating room the anesthetist is involved in the careful monitoring of liquid infusion and anesthesiological procedure. The intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay is an essential tool be…
Immunoaffinity purification and characterization of mitochondrial membrane-bound D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from Jaculus orientalis.
2008
Abstract Background The interconversion of two important energy metabolites, 3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate (the major ketone bodies), is catalyzed by D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH1: EC 1.1.1.30), a NAD+-dependent enzyme. The eukaryotic enzyme is bound to the mitochondrial inner membrane and harbors a unique lecithin-dependent activity. Here, we report an advanced purification method of the mammalian BDH applied to the liver enzyme from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis), a hibernating rodent adapted to extreme diet and environmental conditions. Results Purifying BDH from jerboa liver overcomes its low specific activity in mitochondria for further biochemical characterization of the e…
Role of the gastroenterologist in the management of the obese patient.
2017
Obesity is a highly prevalent disease worldwide, and one in which gastroenterologists can play an important role. Some digestive diseases are more common in obese patients, and preoperative evaluation may be required in some cases. Additionally, bariatric surgery can lead to digestive complications in the short and long term that require intervention, and endoscopic treatment can be an important factor in weight loss. The aim of this review is to highlight the role of the gastroenterologist in the management of obese patients who are either scheduled for or have undergone surgical or endoscopic treatment for obesity.
Role of the dental surgeon in the early detection of adults with underlying HIV infection / AIDS
2011
A review is made of the late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, a subject of growing interest in public health. It has been estimated that in Europe 30% of all HIV-infected people are unaware of their seropositive condition, and this in turn is associated with a poorer long-term disease prognosis and an increased risk of transmission to other individuals. The role of the dental surgeon in this context could be of great importance, since there are many oral lesions that can suggest the existence of underlying infection. The study also addresses the controversial subject of rapid HIV testing, and whether these tests should be performed on a routine basis in the dental …
