Background Conflicts of interest (COI) between industry and surgeons frequently introduce biases into surgical research. The abstracts submitted for presentation in scientific congresses are usually vetted for any indication of commercial bias. Members of review program committees regularly have recognized qualifications, and therefore certain COI are unavoidable. Willingness to pay for a cure of low-risk melanoma patients in Germany

Malignant melanoma is potentially life-threatening but in most cases curable if detected early. Willingness to pay (WTP) is a preference-based construct that reflects burden of disease by assessment of the monetary value for a hypothetical cure from disease. Since WTP (directly as total amount of money) has not been assessed so far in patients with low risk melanoma, it was interesting to gain insights in this patient population and then, in a second step, compare it directly with the WTP of their treating dermato-oncologists. Physical and mental well-being are important determinants of medical doctors’ lives, including their professional activity, which has a direct impact on the health and lives of patients. Bedside surgery in the newborn infants: Survey of the Italian society of pediatric surgery

Abstract Introduction This is the report of the first official survey from the Italian Society of Pediatric Surgery (ISPS) to appraise the distribution and organization of bedside surgery in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in Italy. Methods A questionnaire requesting general data, staff data and workload data of the centers was developed and sent by means of an online cloud-based software instrument to all Italian pediatric surgery Units. Results The survey was answered by 34 (65%) out of 52 centers. NICU bedside surgery is reported in 81.8% of the pediatric surgery centers. Effects of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin (rHuEPO) on Tumor Control in Patients with Cancer-Induced Anemia

It is well recognized that anemia-induced tumor hypoxia is associated with a reduced sensitivity of tumors to radiation and some forms of chemotherapy. Thus, the correction of lower hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) can play an essential role by improving tumor oxygenation. Based on evidence from a number of trials, treatment with rHuEPO will effectively ameliorate anemia and improve quality of life. However, one of the most essential prerequisites for achieving this benefit is the use of rHuEPO in agreement with the evidence-based ASCO/ASH-guidelines recommending a target Hb concentration of 12 g/dl (7.44 mmol/l).
