Physical behavior and morphology of biaxially rolled low-density polyethyleneX

1989

Abstract Biaxial rolling was carried out on low-density polyethylene, and the rolled samples were studied using various techniques. Scanning electron microscopy and analysis of transport properties were used to obtain structural information, which was correlated to thermomechanical and dynamic-mechanical behavior. Results indicate that the initial morphology is destroyed by rolling and that clumps of molecules, like fibrils, are generated parallel to the rolling plane. The molecular orientation in the plane is mainly radial, with some reinforcement, particularly at high rolling degree, along axes diagonal with respect to the rolling directions. The rolling drastically reduces the molecular …

Bending test for capturing the vivid behavior of giant reeds, returned through a proper fractional visco-elastic model

2015

Abstract This paper presents results of experimental investigations made to evaluate the vivid behavior of giant reed Arundo donax. In particular, attention was paid to the relationship between visco-elastic properties and moisture content, which is widely recognized as one of the key factor that influences the mechanical properties of all wood-based materials. To this aim, after a controlled drying treatment on samples of reed, stress relaxation tests in three point bending configuration were performed to evaluate the effects of moisture content on visco-elastic behavior of the giant reed. Further, the novel aspect of this paper is that of using an Euler–Bernoulli model embedded with an ad…

Simplified Model for Compressive Behavior of Concrete Columns Strengthened by Steel Angles and Strips

2010

This paper presents an analytical model to determine the compressive response of concrete members, having a square transverse cross section and reinforced with steel angles at the corners and steel strips connecting the steel angles. The model evaluates the effects of transverse strips and steel angles on confinement pressures, including strength and buckling phenomena. Compressive response was evaluated in cases of directly and indirectly loaded elements. The data produced correlate well with available experimental data.

Microwave photoassisted dissipation and supercurrent of a phase-biased graphene-superconductor ring

2021

Irradiating normal-superconducting junctions with microwave photons produce spectacular effects, such as Shapiro steps and photoinduced modifications of the dc supercurrent. Moreover, microwave irradiation can also have other, hitherto unexplored consequences, such as a photoassisted dissipation which is phase dependent. Here we present a finite-frequency measurement of both the dissipation and the supercurrent of a phase-biased graphene-superconductor junction in response to microwave photons. We find that, while the supercurrent response is well described by existing theory, the dissipation exhibits unexpected effects which need new theoretical elucidation. Especially with high frequency …

CVBEM solution for De Saint-Venant orthotropic beams under coupled bending and torsion

2014

The aim of this paper is to provide a solution for the coupled flexure–torsion De Saint Venant problem for orthotropic beams taking full advantage of the complex variable boundary element method (CVBEM) properly extended using a complex potential function whose real and imaginary parts are related to the shear stress components, the orthotropic ratio and the Poisson coefficients. The proposed method returns the complete stress field and the unitary twist rotation of the cross section at once by performing only line integrals. Numerical applications have been reported to show the validity and the efficiency of the proposed modified CVBEM to handle shear stress problems in the presence of ort…

Meson-retardation effects in deuteron photodisintegration below ?-threshold

1989

Mesor-retardation effects in photodisintegration of the deuteron below pion threshold are studied by constructing retarded one-boson-exchange potentials using time-dependent non-covariant perturbation theory. The corresponding retarded meson-exchange currents including retarded vertex currents are derived analogously by gauge-invariant minimal coupling. It is found that retardation effects in the wave functions and in the electromagnetic currents as well have a significant influence on total and differential cross sections.

Ion-induced hardening in LiF: Energy loss and fluence effects

2006

The behavior of hardening of LiF crystals irradiated with swift Au, Pb, Bi, Kr, Ni, Ti and S ions with a specific energy of 10 MeV/u is analyzed. The dispersion strengthening as the main mechanism of hardening is verified.

Communication: The pole structure of the dynamical polarizability tensor in equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory.

2018

In this letter, we investigate the pole structure of dynamical polarizabilities computed within the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOM-CC) theory. We show, both theoretically and numerically, that approximate EOM-CC schemes such as, for example, the EOM-CC singles and doubles model exhibit an incorrect pole structure in which the poles that reflect the excitations from the target state (i.e., the EOM-CC state) are supplemented by artificial poles due to excitations from the CC reference state. These artificial poles can be avoided by skipping the amplitude response and reverting to a sum-over-states formulation. While numerical results are generally in favor of such a solution, its maj…
