Strehl ratio versus defocus for noncentrally obscured pupils.

1994

We discuss from the viewpoint of the Strehl ratio versus defocus, or the normalized axial-irradiance distribution, the influence of decentering the dark mask of an annular pupil. Our treatment, which is valid for pupil apertures with any Fresnel number, permits us to infer that the axial behavior of a noncentrally obscured pupil is equivalent to that of an apodizer with continuous amplitude variations. Hence the Strehl ratio versus defocus of an optical system can be shaped by use of noncentered dark masks that act as continuous gray apodizers. Several numerically evaluated examples are presented.

Optical hysteresis in a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator

2007

International audience; High contrast optical bistability is found experimentally in the pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two counterpropagating pump waves. The data are in qualitative agreement with the results of calculation.

Study of the Planacon XP85012 photomultiplier characteristics for its use in a Cherenkov detector

2016

Main properties of the multi-anode microchannel plate photomultiplier to be used in a Cherenkov detector are discussed. The laboratory test results obtained using irradiation of the MCP-PMT photocathode by picosecond optical laser pulses with different intensities (from single photon regime to the PMT saturation conditions) are presented. peerReviewed

Acoustic phonons for coherent photon control in semiconductor structures

2007

We present a novel concept for acousto-optical modulation in waveguide (WG) structures using coherent phonons in the form of surface acoustic waves (SAWs). Here, a SAW impinging perpendicular to a waveguide structure induces a change in phase of the light propagating through it, which is translated into a transmission intensity modulation by using the WG as an arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). We show that the modulation becomes strongly enhanced if the SAW induces phase changes of opposite sign in the MZI arms. Very compact modulators with an interaction length between the optical and acoustic waves of approx. 15 µm have been fabricated using focusing acoustic transducers to gene…

Parallel phase-shifting digital holography based on the fractional Talbot effect

2010

A method for recording on-axis single-shot digital holograms based on the self-imaging phenomenon is reported. A simple binary two-dimensional periodic amplitude is used to codify the reference beam in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, generating a periodic three-step phase distribution with uniform irradiance over the sensor plane by fractional Talbot effect. An image sensor records only one shot of the interference between the light field scattered by the object and the codified parallel reference beam. Images of the object are digitally reconstructed from the digital hologram through the numerical evaluation of the Fresnel diffraction integral. This scheme provides an efficient way to perfo…

Entanglement swapping in a Franson interferometer setup

2007

We propose a simple scheme to swap the non local correlations, characteristic of a Franson interferometric setup, between pairs of frequency entangled photons emitted by distinct non linear crystals in a parametric down conversion process. Our scheme consists of two distinct sources of frequency entangled photons. One photon of each pair is sent to a separate Mach - Zender interferometer while the other photons of the pairs are mixed by a beam splitter and then detected in a Ou - Mandel interferometer. For suitably postselected joint measuremetns, the photons sent at the Mach -Zender show a coincidence photocount statistics which depends non locally on the settings of the two interferometer…

Impact of Crystal Habit on Cirrus Radiative Properties

2007

The impact of assumed ice crystal morphology of subtropical cirrus on the solar and thermal infrared (IR) radiative field above, within, and below the cirrus is quantified. For this purpose airborne measurements of ice crystal size distribution from the CRYSTAL-FACE campaign and a library of optical properties of nonspherical ice crystal habits are implemented into radiative transfer simulations. Two cirrus cases are studied in detail: a high (cold) cirrus cloud with small visible optical thickness (τ≈1), and a lower (warmer) cirrus cloud of relatively large visible optical thickness (τ≈7). For t+he solar wavelength range the impact of shape characteristics of the crystals was important for …

Analysis of photon-scanning tunneling microscope images of inhomogeneous samples: determination of the local refractive index of channel waveguides

1995

Channel waveguides are imaged by a photon-scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). The polarization of the light and its orientation with respect to the guide axis are shown to be very important parameters in the analysis of the images of such samples. We simulated image formation for the plane of incidence parallel to the axis of the guide. Our theoretical results are qualitatively in agreement with our measurements. These results show the ability of the PSTM to give information about the local refractive-index variations of a sample.

Spatiotemporal Complexity in Step-Index Multimode Fibers

2016

We study supercontinuum generation in step-index fibers with a varying number of modes. We observe new spatiotemporal effects, including evidence of multimode spectral incoherent solitons, and a universal transition to spatiotemporal complexity.

Resolution-enhanced optical coherence tomography based on classical intensity interferometry.

2009

We propose a fourth-order interference scheme for optical coherence tomography operating with broadband incoherent (or quasi-incoherent) light. It is shown that using this proposal, an axial resolution improvement by a factor of 2 and a better sensitivity for weakly reflecting samples are obtained than with the standard second-order correlation scheme. From a practical perspective, we suggest the use of broadband Q-switched pulses and performing ultrafast intensity correlation with a nonlinear crystal. The global performance of our proposal is illustrated by means of numerical simulations
